This is a normal post What’s your point, that there have been successful black pop artisis
So the music industry hasn’t been racist? Just want to know what your beef is with what Lizzo says - it may be fair but I’m not clear.

"She explained: “I think if people did any research they would see that there was race music and then there was pop music. And race music was their way of segregating Black artists from being mainstream, because they didn’t want their kids listening to music created by Black and brown people because they said it was demonic and yada, yada, yada.”

I'd argue that some of the biggest, arguably the biggest Pop artists of the '80s were POC. Who did the whites get? A Flock of Seagulls? Rick Astley?
Of course there was (and is) discrimination in the music industry. But to suggest that black artists were somehow segregated and not given the same exposure as white artists is complete nonsense.
The woman is either a fucking moron, or worse, using the race debate to be deliberately inflammatory.

This is a normal post Oh, they had plenty to say about black pop artists, believe you me.
And as an aside, in the late 80s PE sold an awful lot of records, getting themselves in the 'pop charts'. But carry on.

This is a normal post Well, I don't know if her point is incompatible with successful, mainstream black artists
You could go back to Cole Porter, through Little Richard etc. and the big Motown acts as examples of very successful black pop artist, but then I think David Bowie makes the point really well in 1983 about how racist MTV was:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZGiVzIr8Qg

I'd say Bowie and Lizzo would be making the same argument,

This is a normal post You don't have to overcompensate.
You could have taken issue with what she said without calling her names, so it's very revealing that you chose to do so, particularly one so (literally) dehumanising. Whether your problem with her is that she's black, a woman, fat, all of the above, whatever, it paints you as a deeply unpleasant human being.

were to be found in the 'urban'/'rnb, funk & soul'/disco section of the high street record shop, back when such things existed.

(, Tue 29 Nov 2022, 17:11, Reply)
This is a normal post Yeh.
Black music has always been categorised as a thing. 'Urban' was always a euphemism for it.

Have a look at the Disco Sucks rallies, see which records were being thrown on the bonfires.

Then consider how segregated American culture was, with certain radio stations refusing to play music by black people.

This is all perfectly obvious. There's a lineage of racism in the music industry. Like lots of other industries.
(, Tue 29 Nov 2022, 18:25, Reply)
This is a normal post I won't disagree with you that there is definitely racism
going on when it comes to "disco sucks" but it wasn't the only thing going on. I get the impression that in a similar way that punk was a reaction to prog, hip hop was a reaction to disco. There's an excellent video by DMC that goes into it a bit (at about the 4 minute mark) youtu.be/QPRmFJ_U8Ug
On a slightly different note a colleague went to the MOBO awards a few years back and it was such a narrow version of "black" music it was unreal. No jazz, no ska, no blues, no funk, no disco...
