What still pisses me off though
is that the guy they beat up will need care for the rest of his life (if this is indeed the story I am thinking of) and they got five years for the GBH, which means out in two or three. What's that? I think that jail is the problem to these shitbags. most decent folk avoid crime because the thought of prison is a deterrent. If prison is nothing worse that butlins with (only slightly) less drugs / booze / sex, where's the deterrent?

Why isn't jail hard? It should be a 5'x7' cell with bars on the front, preferably outdoors, and bread & water once a day.

There hasn't been a link showing reduced murder rates
with the introduction of capital punishment.

Personally I think there should be two types of jail sentence: 2 weeks or life. Nothing in between. I can't remember where I read it, but apparantly for many prisoners, they gradually get used to it if they're in too long, so if they get let out, they may find jail was actually a more stable way of life (sort of like in Shawshank redemption). But 2 weeks will merely shit up an opportune criminal into not wanting to go back.

It's not that jail is a "B&B" or whatever the Daily Mail would have you believe. It's just that for some criminals it can be more stable once they get used to it.

I'm sure the justice system isn't that bad (if by bad you mean not locking people up) as the author of this story makes out as we have a very high rate of people in prison.

We had something similar happen in my town a few years ago....
A group of 'jocks' (american high school football players) attacked a group of goths. One of the jocks drove over a goth teen, then reversed and backed over him. The guy driving got 10 years probation (which he violated a couple of years later and only ended up doing 2-3 years).....all because the kids looked different. The town was in an uproar, believing that the kid should have received a life sentence.

All the other kids who attacked, including the other 2 in the car, were never arrested or charged.

It makes me burn to see things like this happen at all, and also a bit glad that I don't live in the UK any more, but here is a suggestion just interested in hearing your comments on:

Parents and siblings of the murderers executed. Just like that. Erased.

This (for me at least) achieves a number of things instantly:

1. Offenders have the rest of their lives to think about how THEY are responsible for the consequences to their own family. I think even chavscum like this might eventually "geddit" that they fucked up.
2. No more cost to taxpayers for dole scrounging families - possibly offset by life sentence offenders are now receiving, but worth it in my eyes.
3. Would you think twice if you knew that if you were going to beat the crap out of someone, your mam, dad and little brothers and sisters may well end up with a bullet between the eyes?

I dunno, I have a number of painful and miserable thoughts for people like this, mainly because I think they hardly qualify as people.

I'm going to go and cuddle my little daughter now.

I suppose I can claim a small amount of knowledge
of the criminal justice system, as I practice entirely in crime. The sentences were quite long, and that seems right.

Usually, I'd point out that they'd only do half of any custodial sentence, then be let out, maybe even less with early release schemes. But 16 years is a very long time, and policies change!

Prison is supposed to be reformative as well as punitive, which people sometimes struggle with. Especially in cases like this, it's easy to wonder why our tax pennies are being spent trying to turn these blokes into human beings fit to share our planet, when that's something the parents should have done from the moment they were born -- and quite clearly failed to do!


Killing family members might be a bit much, and I'm personally opposed to the death penalty, but a 20 year minimum would be nice. A mandatory 5 year minimum for gun possession or even knife possession would be nice too.


Right, I'm off to prepare for the trial of the decade now -- theft of a nintendo DS. The glamour of the law, huh?

working as a nurse looking after people with acquired brain injuries, i all too often see unfortunates who were assaulted and now spend the rest of their lives having everything done for them. what a waste.
so how about getting the perps no doubt unemployed parents to be gainfully employed by washing the shitty sheets that are removed from these poor poor peoples beds.
and i stand by execution for the perps themselves. they have no purpose in life.

Far better to put 'em to work in jail to make sure they pay for their incarceration and the costs of their trial. I agree with many points raised above. These two have been convicted beyond a shadow of a doubt of their guilt, due to there being witnesses. I would agree wholeheartedly with various sentiments being echoed that their miserable little existences be cut short. However, that isn't an option, and based on the current way the law stands the right result has occurred. But in this case, life should mean life.

Or, we could adopt TRL's solutions... Personally I'd rip their heads off and stuff them so far up their arses that they could see what they had for breakfast.

If, in cases such as this where there was no provocation, no mitigating circumstances whatever apart from being scum, the judge could use a phrase from the past.

"Thirty Years Hard Labour" springs to mind.

Or "You will serve your sentence at Colchester Military Prison*."

Or "You will taken from this place to a place of lawful execution where you will be hanged by the neck until dead. May God have mercy on your soul" (I know we won't get that one, but hey)
