syfy
seriously, what the fuck? i've no problem with sci-fi, it's perfectly acceptable and at least recognisable as an abbreviation, but syfy? the words science and fiction do not contain a single y between them, so why the hell has the sci-fi channel decided to change its name to syfy?

If you're gonna use the abomination that is 'sci-fi'
you might as well fuck it up further.

hahahaha!
that seems appropriate, as some of the shows on there are about as appealing as a case of festering vaginal pustules

their reasoning
was that "Sci-Fi" immediately turns people off and limits their appeal as a channel, bearing in mind they're hardly exclusively sci-fi any more. Syfy lacks the nerd association and so more people will tune in to what is generally excellent programming.
I have no idea if it worked.

i doubt it
if they could stop the picture freezing every time you're watching something, that might encorage people to watch more.
then again, i just watched the new series of V, which turned out to be quite good.

Dont watch tv, so I havent seen it - but if I saw anything referred to as syfy I'd assume it was welsh, and thus wouldn't watch it anyway

it's a bit odd to weigh in on a discussion about something on tv
when your first comment is that you don't watch any

The discussion was about the word "syfy" - I commented on that. I dont understand the problem with my not watching tv.

no problem with it
but if as you say you are just commenting on the word syfy, whether or not you watch tv is irrelevant, and an odd thing to open with. hence the comments.

Relevant only to indicate that I haven't seen the syfy thing on tv.

Because they can trademark Syfy
Which they couldn't do with the generic term "sci-fi".
