It doesn't take much to work out the most likely reason that Fred Phelps claims to hate gays so much, does it? Does anyone else have a strong urge to let the other church members in on the secret?

Not sure Fred's offspring chose to be brought up in that environment, either. For what it's worth, two of his grand-daughters quit the church very publicly, and went on to completely denounce its behaviour and apologise for their part in it.

WBC is a business, nothing more
They're a slick operation. They turn out with their ironically rainbow coloured "God Hates..." banners (it's not just fags, it's "fags enablers" like the US Army and basically anyone not related to Fred), and they very, very carefully do only what they have a guaranteed constitutional right to do, and very very carefully monitor the actions of anyone who might interfere with their constitutionally-guaranteed rights.

And if anyone, anyone at all, but especially anyone official, tries in any way to stop them, or even just fails to protect them and their rights, Fred (who before he set up the church was an extremely outspoken and successful civil rights lawyer who used to get shot at because he defended black people) and his family sue them. And because they're good at what they do, they win. That's how they make money. It's repellent, but at the same time elegant. You want free speech? You got it. And this is some of the free speech you have to put up with.

I actually have some small grudging respect for the WBC...
...because they are actually doing what their holy book tells them to do.

If you're a Christian, you are supposed to be out stoning disobedient children, persecuting everyone who's eaten a prawn cocktail, and haranguing those who wear poly/cotton blended shirts.

Many other Christians run the words of the holy book through a filter of common sense, empirically-derived ethical values, and general decency to other people, and come up with something workable in the modern world.

Of course, in doing so, they prompt the question: "Why not to just apply these filters on their own, and cut out the holy book entirely?"

But it's nice to see at least one example of unfiltered obedience to holy writ, if only as a cautionary example.

And on the gripping hand, at least they're not flying planes into buildings or persuading depressed people to blow themselves up in crowded marketplaces.

I discussed them the other day on another forum
We came to the conclusion that the best way to wipe them out would be to find their demonstrations - when they conveniently stand in lines along the edge of a road - and send a large vehicle (say, a 20-ton truck) along the pavement at high speed to mow them down. The end result would be success and a sticky, fundamentalist paste.

This could be made even better if the truck was driven by Jim Caviezel, in-character as the big JC
