Gonz, you're a man about town, someone in the know.
If I buy a new desktop HDD in the next month or two, is it worth going SSD or just go for a normal one?
(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:17, Reply)
Internal?
If I wasn't using a laptop, I would get 128gb SSD to run the OS and programs, and a few 1 or 2tb HDs for storage.

But I've not looked into figures or anything on this, so I'm not sure what sort of boost that would give me over a standard HD.
(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:26, Reply)
It's internal yeah
I don't have any problem with physical space so I'll probably get a SSD if I can get a good deal.
I think it's actually quite the performance boost, loading times etc.
(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:32, Reply)
I'd say no
the cost prohibits getting anything with any capacity unless you're proper minted and you'll only gain a few seconds, particularly as the thing that slows down Windows the most is all the crap it loads after the operating system and unless you're going to put all that crap on C: too, I don't really see the point.

I've seen some pretty impressive speed tests, but unless you're in the habit of opening every single program on your machine at the same time, I don't see how it'll be of any practical benefit.

Impressive technology, just not currently worth the money. Leave it to the people who buy 500 pound graphics cards for the moment.

WHERE is my internet husband when i need him
or anyone else who understands the VAT rise where the supply fell due before the increase, but the demand has been made and payment will be made AFTER the increase... can they charge 20% or are they stuck with 17.5%??
(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:25, Reply)
Surely it depends on when the invoice was raised?

(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:27, Reply)
it's rent
so it falls due "whether demanded or not". but they are saying the relevant date is when payment is received, not when the "supply" (here the supply of premises) was made.

i don't think this is right but i am not a tax lawyer. argh. i hate tax. i hate paying it and i hate dealing with it.
(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:28, Reply)
Tax doesn't have to be taxing.

(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:30, Reply)
I'm pretty sure it's when the payment was due originally and not when they decided to pay it.
*hates tax too*
(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:33, Reply)
The rules are quite flexible
Normally I say it's the invoice date that is important, but not so much here.

If the work was completed before the 4th but invoiced after, you can choose which VAT rate you wish to apply.

For a continuous service that straddles the 4th, you can charge the new rate OR you can apportion accordingly.
(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:29, Reply)
thank you darling
so rent for the december quarter (25 dec - 24 march) would therefore attract vat at either rate? sorry, our entire corporate tax dept seems to be on the phone or generally avoiding me!

edit - they have now confirmed what you said, by electing the tax point to be the date of payment as no invoice was sent out previously. you're a star.
(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:31, Reply)
Here's a good example question:
If you are paying rent on a quarterly basis and pay the rent for December 2010 to February 2011 on 24th December 2010, does the landlord have the right to apportion the VAT relating to the period after 4th January 2011?

The tax point for standard rated property rentals is the date you issue a VAT invoice or receive payment if earlier. You do not need to apportion the rent between the amount up to 3rd January 2011 and after 3rd January 2011.

i wish you worked here

(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:42, Reply)
I wish I worked there too, with a more interesting job
Do you have bins in the office?
Do the bins need emptying?
I could be the guy who empties the bins and goes through everyones desk drawers when the office is empty.
(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:45, Reply)
Let's face it, you're going to be hard pushed to find a job in accounting interesting anywhere.

we had a cleaner who did that
the bugger nicked £100 of hair products from my desk when my latest shampoo order arrived.

anyway they have now nicked him (which will teach me to be sexist as i was sure it would be a woman) and i am being reimbursed so all is well. but i don't recommend it as a career.
(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:53, Reply)
I dunno, my hair is the longest it's been in years. I could do with some decent hair products.
What with snow & work, I haven't been able to get it cut. I was going to book an appointment for saturday. Guess what's forecast for friday? More bastard snow.

ideally men should have just enough hair to be tousled
and to run your fingers through. unless it's curly, in which case do us all a favour and shave that 'fro

(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 15:08, Reply)
I am determined to get it cut this weekend
quite frankly I look shocking

(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 15:12, Reply)
i know loads of girls who love shaved heads
it's just personal preference - i don't mind it (in fact, don't even notice it if they tick other boxes like making me laugh), but given a free rein i'll take a nicely tousled head of hair please.
(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 15:17, Reply)
*flicks hair*
I beg to differ.

(, Wed 5 Jan 2011, 14:34, Reply)
The rule of thumb though is if the invoice is dated after the 4th, apply 20%
