What's the best Fish and Chips you've ever had?

Chompy, you don't have to answer this, I know you think they're bland.

Alt.Q: Should I go back to Warwickshire this weekend?
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:20, 98 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
Allergic to fish
but I had some really good chips in a place in Oxford. I also like the salt they use on the chips in Bodeans

Alt: Yes, you should. If it's just for a visit obviously
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:21, Reply)
The famous Bodeans seasoning salt
With sugar, smoked paprika a smidge of cayenne and pepper.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:24, Reply)
I'm totally going to mix myself some of that

Me and you soon again yes please ok bye.

Have you had the beef ribs in there?
They are pretty special.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:31, Reply)
No, I haven't
I'm tempted by the £15 offer in the Clapham one of a ticket to the film and a meal. Have to just wait for a decent film.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:33, Reply)
and look at this
www.bodeansbbq.com/qcard/ I just filled in the form.

And definitely soon. Depending on money v soon.

I've had one of those for nearly a year now
Totally worth it.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:33, Reply)
Seriously.
Seriously?! All that for free? Just for showing a card?

What was the 10 minute record?

(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:38, Reply)
Finishing most of the burger
before Crow arrived
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:41, Reply)
Oh yeah, that was impressive stuffing.
We should do a relay. You're only allowed to order once the person before you's finished eating.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:44, Reply)
Our entire meal would take thirty minutes
edit: thinking about it, I was planning on doing dinner in London relatively soon. Fancy doing the same thing as last time? i.e. I get there for lunch, we stuff and then have dinner?
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:45, Reply)
Sounds perfect. Which weekend are you thinking?
Am considering a gig on the 16th, but haven't got tickets yet. You're welcome to come to that if you fancy (Metronomy). And bear in mind it's the girlybash the weekend after that. I think.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:49, Reply)
I can't make it to the girly bash remember :(
not sure which weekend will check and see the cost of coach ticket
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:51, Reply)
Can you not?! OH NOOOOOOO :(
That's so disappointing.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:51, Reply)
No :(

Aww, no way
how come?
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 14:00, Reply)
That's made me do a genuine sadface.
I'll print a picture of your face and stick it to my hand and just make out with that all evening.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 14:05, Reply)
that made me do a genuine lol
and I'm sadfacing as well, would love to
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 14:06, Reply)
Is it time or cash or what?
I'm sure if you can get up here we can cover you for the evening, I'd far rather buy a few drinks than not have you there.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 14:10, Reply)
It's cash mostly
several expenses hit me, and I ended up using the stupid credit card to cover them, which means as soon as my student loan comes in, I'll have to use most of it to cover that bill.

Thank you :) I'll be so disappointed to miss it. If I can bag a lift with someone, then I shall definitely do my best to make it
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 14:13, Reply)
We need to go to Byron

My dear family and a meal
Only thing is it's my only free weekend before I'm booked for about 5 in a row. Plus I'm poor because of a recent trip to Berlin.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:25, Reply)
How much is the train fare/petrol?

(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:27, Reply)
About £13
Am I a cheapskate? :(
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:34, Reply)
It's not a lot is it?
Will the meal be free?

What I am asking is, if you go will you be "up" on the deal?
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:36, Reply)
Only just up on cash
but down on time, I suspect my dear old Mother will have me doing "jobs" dawn till dusk when I'm up there too.

certainly not the stuff from that cunt Rick Stein's place in Padstow
best is probably from a place called Squires in Braunton, North Devon.

Failing that, the one about 3 minutes walk from my house is pretty fucking good.

why back to Warwickshire?
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:24, Reply)
Really?
I always wanted to visit Rick Steins place. Thanks for the tip!

Anyone ever experienced frying in lard/dripping?
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:26, Reply)
it's horribly over-priced
to be honest I'd steer clear of Padstow altogether. It's spoilt now. Go to St Ives instead.

if I have I don't recall.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:27, Reply)
No, the thought of it makes me feel a little sick.
As does the thought of frying beef in beef dripping.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:27, Reply)
It makes the best chips EVER.
Wouldn't fry fish in it but they used to, in olden times like.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:29, Reply)
I had chips in it from a tiny chippy on the Isle of Bute
once, and they were delicious.

Pretty sure I went to a place in Bridlington that apparently fried fish in dripping, but they refused to say if they were that day. I suspect that it was lard.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:35, Reply)
i use lard for Yorkshire puddings
works a treat
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:29, Reply)
I've never made Yorkies
/Shames
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:37, Reply)
They are very easy, maker batter with eggs, flour and milk - I don't measure just look for a "back of spoon" covering consistency
heat the lard until it is super hot in the oven, remove the yorkie tray and put on the gas, medium heat, and pour in the batter. get it back in the oven asap and resist opening the door for at least 10 mins.

Done
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:49, Reply)
Bookmarked!
Cheers. I need a special tray though right?
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:59, Reply)
yeah
muffin tray or something.

don't bother with non-stick though, because at some point they will stick and you'll have to use something metal to get them out.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 14:01, Reply)
I don't eat fish, but the best chips ever were in a pub in I have no idea where
They were golden and crispy on the outside, but the inside was like mashed potato. Truly a sacred experience.

Alt: Depends. What excitements lie in wait for you there?
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:26, Reply)
My ma's fish'n'chips, real proper chips that tastes like potato and are crispy and are cooked with onion that are soooo lush.
And the fish, Haddock or Cod, cooked in motza meal.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:26, Reply)
Waters Green, in Macclesfield
Fucking spectacularly good.

Alt: Yes.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:26, Reply)
Mcdonalds filet o fish and chips with an apple pie to finish
Alt: Depends, how much do you like Castles?
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:27, Reply)
never had them together
I've only ordered fish out once and it was tilapia in lemon sauce and was lush and amazing

alt: absolutely
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:27, Reply)
fish and chips is a quintessentially british thing
battered or breadcrumbed fish, like cod, or haddock or plaice, deep fried and served with chips

and mushy peas. I fucking love mushy peas.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:31, Reply)
yeah i know man
my mom makes the fish sometimes, but it comes from a box and it's gross and she usually makes mac n cheese or stir fry to go with
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:32, Reply)
Google image search fish and chips and you'll see
Britain's contribution to world cuisine.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:35, Reply)
omfg
i just said i know what it is
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:47, Reply)
fair enough :-)
I'm not massively keen on the fish you tend to get over here in a lot of places, too thick for my liking.

I tend to go for either a few small bits of fish, or go the jumbo battered sausage route.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:35, Reply)
you lot take it with malt vinegar right?
Or am I misinformed?
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:53, Reply)
personal preference generally
but yeah and salt

I like so much vinegar on chips that if you breathe near it you almost choke to death.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:54, Reply)
In the fridge
I have a mix of pickled onion vinegar and the vinegar from those sweet peppers. It's vinegartastic.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:58, Reply)
:O
Want
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:59, Reply)
it does sound like good stuff
I'm having bangers and mash tonight, which means I can break out the chipotle tabasco :-D
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 14:00, Reply)
we've got olde english salt and malt vinegar crisps
i care not for them
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 14:01, Reply)
it's a little different using vinegar on hot chips
more potent though. If you aren't a fan of the crisps you probably won't like vinegar on chips.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 14:01, Reply)
i like regular salt and vinegar
but malt vinegar is a whole other flavor
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 14:02, Reply)
I'm not sure what sort of vinegar they use for regular salt and vinegar crisps
malt vinegar is a pretty standard condiment over here, so I suspect I probably just assumed it was that.
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 14:08, Reply)
we have a lot of cider vinegars
not sure what the standard is either but malt vinegar is definitely different than any other flavor i've had
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 14:15, Reply)
there's a local place that does fish and chips
i think i may have that for lunch
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 14:02, Reply)
Ahh mushy peas.
Can't get decent ones in London very often.

I am totally having fish and chips for dinner now!
(, Tue 5 Apr 2011, 13:33, Reply)
Ever tried Masters Superfish
on Waterloo road? They have some quality peas (and fish!) on offer.

There's a chippie called Fishcotheque there
Makes me giggle.

Their superfish (whole cod fillet)
is huuuuge and wonderful. Definitely worth eating in too, as I always find wrapped fish goes soggier more quickly.

Fisher's on Fulham High St is ace.
Their large cod and chips w/curry sauce are amazing. They got voted best takeaway in the area last year and their business was a blazing success, literally - the place burnt down about six months ago.
