and even david Walliams couldn't ruin today's episode for me.

And,by the way, I didn't really think that other bloke was a nonce. I actually doubt there are any genuine nonces on B3ta, at least among the ones that have posted nonce like stories. I suspect that people that way inclined wouldn't be dumb enough to write about it.

I did think that bloke was a fucking idiot, mind, but also I may have been a bit grumpy this afternoon I think. I probably should have ignored him, rather than give him shit though.

but I never watched whatserface's comedy series, which seems to be a reason lots of people disliked her character. I just liked how she was properly a strong character without being all cool as sassy

Maybe not exclusively true, but there's a strain of it.
Probably a reaction, I agree. I prefer strong characters, be they male or female, but i'd rather the one wasn't at the expense of the other.

I think if you totted it up, the number of women abused, raped and helpless in films as compared to men will still probably FAR outnumber men. We're just not used to seeing those roles reversed so it sticks in your mind more than the countless examples of strong competent men and weak women.

I'd rather it was that way round myself, than the other.
though the best solution would be to have strong men and women, but try and avoid gender stereotyping, so you don't always have a sweet female doctor masquerading as being of actual use.

I think better would be to think of
characters not necessarily as strong or weak, but as rounded. I'm crap at a lot of things, I need to see faults in characters before I can identify.

I think making female characters without flaws (which is something which does keep cropping up, along with the fact they have to be skinny and pretty) makes them more alien and actual demonstrates an idealised male gaze...blah blah blah..boring myself now

The problem is that it's very difficult to let go of feminist rants when there are still so many women suffering at the hands of patriachal socities.
Until they have caught up to the western world, (and we still have a way to go), it's difficult to sit back and relax a little.

this is true, has been for a while
i suspect a part of it is a complete misreading of feminism by a shit load of people. Especially since it's so hard to find clumsy women on TV, now - they have to be pretty, sassy and cool to be a character. I feel sidelined.

I was listening to a singer the other night she had a jolly little ditty about her boyfriend being in a coma and her preferring it that way. I was finding it mildly amusing until I swapped the genders in my head and realised that if is was a bloke singing about how he liked it that his girl friend was just a lump of meat and he didn't have to put up with her whining it'd be horrific.

I think that's the point of his character arc. He seems weak at first but when push comes to shove he will stand up to anyone. The way he confronted The Doctor last week was fantastic.
