9am and no morning thread? WTAF?
Bit hungover this morning, be gentle. Has there ever been a film made of a book which did the source novel justice? That's your question for today. Go.

Alt: Lady GaGa, shag or die?
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:04, 48 replies, latest was 14 years ago)
I totally overslep this morning as I forgot to set my alarm.
Got into work an hour late.

I quite enjoyed the film Catch 22.

Alt: Die
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:06, Reply)
I was thinking about Catch 22, then I thought no way.
The film is a travesty of the book. The film does keep switching time frames, like the book, but it doesn't stand up by itself. Only if you know the book can the film be appreciated.
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:10, Reply)
To be honest I haven't seen the film in years but I remember enjoying it.
And I had a thing for Alan Arkin.

I was supposed to get up at 7 and get on the treadmill
A quick consultation between my head and my legs returned the conclusion "fuck that" so I had an extra half hour in bed
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:10, Reply)
I'll go with One flew over the Cuckoos nest.
I saw the film before reading the book, and thought the two matched up rather well.

alt: who is this Lady Gaga of whom you speak? I looked her up in Burke's and she isn't there.
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:12, Reply)
This was going to be my suggestion too
Sadly work got in the way before I could post it.
Inconsiderate really.

Jaws
Is a better film than book... Eat them apples
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:17, Reply)
Interesting, haven't read the book
I'm prepared to believe you, Jaws the film is better than almost anything in the world

The head coming out of the boat still shits me right up, every time
In other news, morning all
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:20, Reply)
Yep
Even though I will spend the previous 3 minutes thinking "head in the boat" "head in the boat" "head in the boat".
YYYAAAAAAAARRRRRHHHH.

Oh for fuck sake
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:22, Reply)
I think it is the music that does it.
The head appears just off the beat and your mind tunes into the beat....or something

Anyway, its more like ARGH!
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:23, Reply)
You should only read the book
If you have a poorly built plastic shark to hand. The you can wave it in front of your face at the appropriate times.

Gonna need a bigger book

(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:28, Reply)
I was just saying yesterday at work how I really want them to make films out of the second and third K-PAX movies.
There is this show called on the telly called "According to Jim", it is the worst show I've ever seen, ever. It makes me think Katrina wasn't an accident of nature.

I was watching the telly and tesco have an "event", which is a sale of nappies and things like that. A FUCKING EVENT.
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:19, Reply)
Left field choice
The Stand - Not a film, but a TV mini series. I thought it was really good and although not to the book 100%, it certainly had most of it in there

Alt:
Die - through a meat grinder. Slowly

The GodFather?

Being there
Peter Sellers' last film and, I think, by far his best. If you haven't seen it, do so now.
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:28, Reply)
Brilliant, brilliant film
I thought the Geoffrey Rush movie about Sellers' life was excellent, too
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:30, Reply)
Was that the one
Where the actor playing his father does the narration? Saw that a few years ago.
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:33, Reply)
Yeah
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers. All hinged on a staggeringly good performance by Rush
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:36, Reply)
I liked the scene
Where he convinces the TV executive to take him seriously by showing up in character and costume.
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:45, Reply)
I really enjoyed the recent Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Oh, and Lord of the Rings is obviously better with less singing
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:29, Reply)
Good call on LOTR

(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:30, Reply)
Cheers
I only meant to bait the fanboys but the more I think about it...
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:35, Reply)
I enjoyed most of the book but it did get tedious with the singing
The story is class though
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:37, Reply)
You bow to no man, my friend.

(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:47, Reply)
I think even the fanboys don't bother to read the fucking poetry

Fight Club is one of the closest adaptations I've seen
The Da Vinci Code managed to stick to the quality level of the book, good work Cunningham. Other good adaptations are Schindler's List, Muppet Christmas Carol and Trainspotting. According to my eldest son Eragon is the worst book to film adaptation ever but I've managed to avoid both so couldn't comment.

You're from Nottingham aren't you, Darth? My friend is arranging a stag do in May, any suggestions for good pubs/clubs/curiosities? The list doesn't stretch further than Rock City at the moment.
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:43, Reply)
Worst book-to-film adaptation is Northern Lights/The Golden Compass
Staggeringly inept film-making.

I am indeed a Nottinghamian but never spent much of my drinking history outside of Rock City! I can recommend the Pit & Pendulum - deliberately overdone Gothy theme pub, like walking into a Hammer movie - and the Pitcher & Piano, converted church, fooking MASSIVE. This is assuming they're both still there, not been back in years.
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:53, Reply)
They are.

(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:54, Reply)
Cheers for the suggestions
The crowd going up for this are not the outdoors adventure types, they're going more for indulgence than endurance. All the stag do companies suggest going to Hooters, which seems a good enough reason to give the place a wide berth.

I read Postcards From The Edge by Carrie Fisher after watching the film and they bore fuck all resemblance whilst being enjoyable in their own way.
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 10:18, Reply)
Only Hooters in Britain, I believe
It's unbelievably fucking tawdry, as you'd expect, and also a fair trot from Rock City and most of the best pubs.

But it does have breasts.
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 10:21, Reply)
Suggest you go somewhere else.
As an activity, I went white water rafting in the Trent. In November.

It was bracing.

alt: shag, then kill
Then shag again. If you're going to cross a moral line then might as well take the opportunity to cross a few more.
(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:55, Reply)
Alt: Depends how many paper bags I'm allowed.

(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 9:58, Reply)
I suggest you use latex based birth control.

(, Thu 19 Jan 2012, 10:01, Reply)
Alt: I find that the older I get*, the less fussy I seem to be
I also note with interest that most of the people voting for shag are older than me (I think).
I don't really wish death on anyone, but I do often wish for sex so shag gets my vote too.

*and the less sex I get

*waggles eyebrows*

She is not, by any measure, unattractive.
Ideally, I'd like to shag her when she is wearing the meat/bacon outfit.

You could use
a small blow torch and then cook up a treat as you are banging away...
