Honestly, these days I just tend to use iTunes.
It's amazing how an effective business model can stop casual piracy, as opposed to merely stomping your feet and shouting.

Yeah iTunes isn't much more lucrative to the artists than illegal downloads.

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 10:48, Reply)
Yeah, I don't really care.

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 10:51, Reply)
It's infinitely better.

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 10:53, Reply)
'some revenue' is better than 'none'

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:03, Reply)
too expensive

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 10:51, Reply)
I only ever buy the occasional song, I very rarely buy albums.
But yes, they are similarly priced to HMV. Which, since Tangles has stated that iTunes isn't much more lucrative to artists than illegal downloads, it logically follows that buying records from HMV isn't much more lucrative for artists, either.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 10:52, Reply)
is it free? No
then it's too expensive
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 10:52, Reply)
And restrictive.

You should know

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 10:56, Reply)
No, it isn't.
That's a myth born from several releases ago. You can freely play the files on any player that can play mp4a files.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 10:53, Reply)
Can i put them onto someone else's ipod?

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 10:54, Reply)
I don't know, if I'm honest.
I don't use iPods.

Edit: However, I use it on my phone and can play songs on non-Apple devices, so I don't see why not.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 10:55, Reply)

and tries to make you use other shit apple software every time.

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 10:55, Reply)
why would that make you hate it?

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 10:56, Reply)
Just does, it annoys me, especially since I barely use it and have to keep maintaining it.

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 10:57, Reply)
you know,
i don't think you would lose any of the normal functionality if you just didn't update it.

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:07, Reply)
Though why it nags him when you start up your computer, I don't know.
Have you unticked the "check for updates automatically and nag Chompy about it" checkbox?
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:08, Reply)
I've uninstalled instead.

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:09, Reply)
so, you're angry at a product, that does everything you want fine, as long as you tick one box,
but instead of using the products features to make it the best it can be for you, you've removed it and call it shit, when you weren't using it properly.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:12, Reply)
Kind of sounds like a tantrum, to me.

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:13, Reply)
I actually dislike the layout and functionality of the latest version of iTunes a lot
However, since I already have all my music on it, I can't be bothered to uninstall it and use Winamp.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:17, Reply)
How about if you could change what you didn't like by simply unticking a checkbox?

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:19, Reply)
Then that would be fine
but I can't, so I stand by my condemnation of iTunes.

Honestly, you're worse than Battered with the silly hypothetical questions.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:21, Reply)
Sorry, I really don't know where that question came from.

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:23, Reply)
I didn't like a product, so didn't use it.
When people talk about it, I say I didn't like it because it was shit.
And if the default settings are not the correct way for it to be set up then they shouldn't be default. Apples fault not mine
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:19, Reply)
Hahaha

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:21, Reply)
you can tell it to not automatically look for updates.

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:07, Reply)
I find iTunes for video is terribly priced, often a season will cost like £30 compared to a £15 DVD collection.
But I want it in digital so I end up pirating it.

Music though, I rarely pirate that, it's fairly priced on iTunes.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:00, Reply)
Oh, are we talking about videos?
Yeah, I get those off Lovefilm.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:01, Reply)
It's too late for me
I now blanch at the idea of spending money on digital music or video. I'll still fork out for CDs and DVDs though.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:02, Reply)
I've almost given up on CDs and DVDs
I use TV catchup services, Netflix, internet/car radio and the cinema
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:05, Reply)
What about books? I pay for them digitally.

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:10, Reply)
Last month I exceeded my office download allowance almost entirely downloading old issues of Batman comics.

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:11, Reply)
You mean you pay for a licence to read them.

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:12, Reply)
I buy expensive hardbacks because I love nice books.
I don't have an e-reader.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:15, Reply)
I love books
But since I got an e-reader and realised how easy it is to get books for free, I've become totally hooked. I don't physically have room in my house for the physical books I already own, let alone all the ones I have on my computer.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:16, Reply)
I've thrown all my paperbacks away and started buying swanky editions of everything.
Horribly snobbish of me, probably. I've tried using an e-reader but it wasn't the same. Half the pleasure is in how tactile a book can be.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:18, Reply)
I prefer ebooks these days
On my phone - much easier to take our with me when I go for a cigarette than a physical book.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:24, Reply)
I can entirely see their application and I really have no problem with them as methods of reading
they're just not for me, that's all.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:26, Reply)
Me too
It depends if you are the "read once give/throw away" type or if you like to keep books for further reading.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:18, Reply)
I read once then horde books
But using digital version means my horde takes up the same physical space as my music, video and comic collections.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:20, Reply)
hoard

(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:21, Reply)
I thought there was something wrong with that, but I couldn't think of the other spelling.
Thank you.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:26, Reply)
I quite like the idea of your books
sweeping across the steppes and conquering Russia. Your house must smell like horse, though. I don't like the smell of horse. Can I not come over for tea, please?
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:29, Reply)
Swipe didn't invite me to Pizzabash, so no, you can't come.

Space is a good reason to have a Kindle etc
e.g. for going on holiday and so on.

I just don't like the distinction between physical book (which you own) and ebook, which you technically only pay for a licence to read, which can be withdrawn - people have had Kindles remotely wiped by Amazon due to credit card problems they weren't even aware of, for example.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:25, Reply)
I like the distinction in having a reader that doesn't have wi-fi and therefore cant' be wiped by anyone
I also have a computer stuffed to the gills with non DRM epub versions of my books, so there is no licence issue.

Of course, if you were silly enough to actually pay amazon for the books ...
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:27, Reply)
That said, there are a lot of other sites that will sell you non DRM epub versions of books
and then you also have no licence issue.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:29, Reply)
Quite
there's plenty free legal ebooks out there anyway.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:29, Reply)
The good'n'bad with Kindle, is that your read-positions are snyc'd between devices.
The downside is that they can throw a wobbly and it'll lose me £100s.
(, Wed 24 Apr 2013, 11:33, Reply)
£100's?
Fuck me, I've had mine nearly six months and I don' think I've spent a tenner on it yet.
