...which, and I may be being a tad too cryptic here (if so, apologies) means ...

Happy Monday(s)!

I had a lovely weekend. Went down to Galway and Clare. It was very lovely, despite the torrential downpoars!

Great weekend thanks... Chickenlady and I took took the mini-chickens (chicken nuggets?) to the Battle of Britain museum, complete with Spitfires, Hurricanes and cute, furry kittehs and also managed to get a climb in on Sunday too.

And no bloody work. I've been dossing for 4 weeks now (2 weeks after last contract finished and then 2 weeks holiday) and am rapidly running out of cash.
The Obergruppenfuhrer thinks it's wonderful as she's a teacher and thinks we can have idyllic family days, however the overdraft won't like it.
Time to start the whole job search malarkey again, methinks.
Can I find something that I would enjoy, that pays enough to live on, and is within a reasonable distance of home? Yeah, right.
Hey Ho, hope everyone else is having a fluffier morning.

I'm back at work after two weeks off.
It doesn't feel very good.

On the plus side, I had a lovely time with ancrenne at the weekend, met some fantastic 'net weirdos on Friday night and had a wide range of alcohol.

This was Hawkinge, you can tell that the museum doesn't have a lot of funding to spare, but there are lots of planes to see, both complete and in bits.
There were "do not touch" signs everywhere reminding you how valuable the exhibits are, which was made all the funnier when a large and very friendly ginger cat emerged from the cockpit of a Spitfire, having just had a snooze in there.

My weekend was fab, thanks. Met some most excellent people off the internets on Friday night, followed by a leaving do and a punch-up. (Which didn't involve me, I hasten to add).
Saturday was spent at a Stag night, a pub crawl followed by Wimbledon dogs followed by the dodgiest, seediest strip bar you ever did see. Talk about living the stereotype! It's a place I shall never return to... I actually felt a bit grimy afterwards...
Consequently, Sunday was a complete write-off. I'm just about human again!

Ta, I'll have a shufti. The boss just wants me to have a 9-5 Mon-Fri as I've been working 6/7 days per week for the last 10 years, but the industry I'm in (car finance) is flat on it's posterior at the moment, so everyone's cutting costs, which includes my services.
Back to hairycraft, has anyone been to the Yorkshire Air Museum? I tried to go while I was over that way last week, but the rest of the party wouldn't let me go as I am God's Own Aircraft Bore. Peasants.

I'm an aircraft bore too to such an extent that I went to OASC Biggin Hill (and failed) to try to get near to my ambition of trying to fly for a living.
Think I've gotten over it now ... I've jumped out of a few of them which I think means I'm no longer allowed to be an aircraft bore anymore.
My Dad - despite 22 years in the RAF - is STILL an aircraft bore and he takes his grandaughter (my daughter) to air shows two or three times a year despite her being a precocious wee 11-year old who's getting bored by it but flutters her eyelids at him appealingly and he spoils her rotten.

Yep. Victoria, also known as Boo.
She's the apple of her Dads eye, although she lives with her Mum (I'm long since divorced).
Equally, she's long since given up telling her Dad that he's silly when she learns about my attempts to go climb things. The first time I went to Svalbard she was eight and wanted me to hug a polar bear for her. Err, yeah love, OK... :/
( , Mon 11 Aug 2008, 10:14, Reply)

Let me give you an example ... when she was four I used to get in from work and explain what I'd been up to. She'd sit on her bed, fold her arms, roll her eyes and just say "Silly Daddy!".
So I suspect not. Although she is a very talented wee mathematicianette!

I need to do things that I love - so I climb - it terrifies me most of the time, but when I can get a move right, crack a route, and move gracefully over rock...there's nothing better.
Added to which you can also eat vast quantities of *anything* when you go climbing for the day...you need lots of calories!

Plus might be able to get rid of my bingo-wings at the gymn : )
Wouldn't mind rock climbing but I don't think I'm built for it.

There is no 'ideal' build for climbing. If you like walking you're already halfway there...Scrambling would probably suit you as an easy way in.
Scrambling is essentially walking with a bit of very easy climbing thrown in and you're always attached to a rope...a bit like proper mountaineering but without the snow and avalanches.
If you decide to give climbing a go find an indoor wall nearby (there are LOADS around you!), have a go at a taster session....and enjoy watching the half naked men....Oh yes.
And everyone is generally really friendly too.
If I'm honest one of the reasons why I started it was because of the men....or at least it's been one of the things that's kept me going...

Ye Gods women....you kept that quiet.
Quick Tensing! get me my rope.

Yes, it's a little known fact that any man who considers himself a serious climber (particularly if he is a boulderer) has to spend most of the year climbing without any t-shirt on...It's a British Mountaineering Council directive I believe.
And most men who climb regularly have *fantastic* bodies.
Believe me.
I know.

my niece is into rock climbing. She's a slender little thing, but can do two-finger chin-ups.
I've done some very easy rock climbing, but as I tend to get vertigo I think it best that I not do that anymore, and stick to hiking up mountains instead.

*gets ripped*
Now, where can I find a wall in East London?

I like them a bit more chunky though, but no harm in looking : )

There's The Castle, www.castle-climbing.co.uk/
Well worth a visit (I think Chickenlady took me there as one of our first dates!) and reasonably easy to get to too.

There's a wall in Mile End as well, I went once or twice when I was a student. Being a committed smokist and idler I repeatedly climbed about six feet and then fell off, before getting roped into belaying a mate and nearly managing to cripple both of us.
Fun times!

Try here...not been myself yet, but plenty of my mates go there regularly.

How's the thigh - you need to be in peak condition for the weekend!
Also, re the back, perhaps more time should be spent on it.

If you're prepared to come Saff of the River then give me a shout...I climb in North Kent at one of the best climbing walls in the UK...well, maybe not for size...but size isn't everything ;)

Thigh is fine ta, dosed up on painkillers...the back should heal in around 4-6 weeks, no need to stop climbing either.
Found a girlfriend yet?
;-)

Not sure about the climbing. I might get flash backs from when I was 6. I climbed a wall, fell off arse first onto a rock and hurt my fanny.
( , Mon 11 Aug 2008, 16:03, Reply)

I've not hurt myself seriously at all (yet). Nothing more than a few scratches and grazes - mostly on my knees.
And remember if you're on a rope with a good belayer (that's the person holding onto the rope on the ground) you're quite safe.
It's all relative. More people are injured in cars/houses/with knives than when climbing.
I had pulled my intercostal muscles in my back a month or so back...how? Turning over in bed.

I'm off to the wall to teach kids how to climb.
See y'all tomorrow maybe.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I'm trying to convince a mate to come to Mile End with me because I don't wanna go on my own!
@Chickenlady: I might come down when I know if I'm any good or not... :)

I pop out for a while to do some work and arrange my weekend and you lot go all active on me.
What happened to good, old fashioned slobbishness?

You're damn right! Only an hour til booze time. I have a football jersey with wine and chilli stains on for such special occasions as this evening.
( , Mon 11 Aug 2008, 16:15, Reply)

yes, booze time approacheth and the only things I intend to climb are the steps out of the tube station when I get home. Slowly.

I remember it well. The novelty of that yoke wears off quick I tell thee. I have a 15 minute walk home now.

No bastard wants to give me a job.
Cockbags.
Stop talking about all this fitness business. You make me feel bad as I have exactly no excuse to not do anything.

How are we all today?
I would appear to have hurt my hip in a strange, inexplicable way.
( , Mon 11 Aug 2008, 16:56, Reply)

Don't come here, then. They'll make you climb stuff.
Edit: No, do...how are you apart from your hip (are you 85?).
( , Mon 11 Aug 2008, 16:58, Reply)

Stupid bad weather and having no indoor walls here.
My hips would appear to be 85. Maybe my hips are from a dog or something.
