Acoustic Tunes...

The HSH OT board has slid into the 'favourite songs' mode again and this has reminded me of something...

'The Belmers' which is the...ahem...'band' that consists of Captain Placid and I, are to play an acoustic gig in a week or so (he's put it in the calendar as a b3ta bash...woo!)

www.b3ta.com/calendar/event/16283

But we're at a loss of which songs to play.

Obviously the more well known the better, but can anybody think of any songs to suggest that are either:

a) Acoustic
or b) would sound good played acoustically.

we're playing to an audience that might just reach double figures here folks so suggestions would be appreciated...

Wouldn't be too hard to
do an accoustic of Al Stewart's Lord Grenville but I suspect it doesn't fall into category B.

edit: 50 ways to leave your lover by Paul Simon or A little respect - Erasure.

Sultans of Swing
honestly - it sounds great done acoustically.

Edit: and Stan Ridgway's Camouflage - my fella did a rough-sounding acoustic blues version of this at a gig a few weeks ago and it sounded awesome, though that could be nostalgia of songs from my childhood kicking in.
(, Tue 23 Sep 2008, 11:56, Reply)
the acoustic version of layla is rubbish compared to the original
and I don't like that all that much either ;-)

I second CHCB's idea. Camoflage would be awesome

Some ideas
Save Tonight - Eagle Eye Cherry
-(If either of you can sing well) Ain't no Sunshine - Bill Withers
-(If you can make it work with 2 acoustic guitars - one playing the high end, one playing low) Is this love - Bob Marley

Any good?
(, Tue 23 Sep 2008, 12:02, Reply)
if you are going to do Save Tonight
then you may as well do Passenger by Iggy Pop because they are the same chords
(, Tue 23 Sep 2008, 12:11, Reply)
The Green Fields of France
also a good one.

May I suggest...
The Only Gay Eskimo by Corky and the Juice Pigs.
(, Tue 23 Sep 2008, 12:28, Reply)
These are all brilliant! - Keep 'em coming (oo-er)...
We know 'Time of your life' and 'Save Tonight' so might dig 'em up...

Captain P knows 'Layla' too...hmm would give me a chance to get a beer break :)

Edit: @ DiT - Eskimo is a given mate - we do it at every gig.

We also ad lib at the end with the different styles of singing it. Our 'Milli Vanilli' is excrutiating...

@ grove
i LOVE that song.

vipros - and i thought you were a man of discerning tastes... sure it's been played to death, but it's a classic!
(, Tue 23 Sep 2008, 12:29, Reply)
DiT
Phil Nichol's still using it in his set, so I don't think he'd be best pleased if it came back to him.

EDIT: pooflake, you plaigeriser....

Ah, is he? I thought Corky and Co had disbanded...
Well then, I disassociate myself from my above comments! ;)

'Green Fields Of France'...

Holds some shitty memories for the Captain and me...

We used to be forced to play it over and over along with 'The cunting fields of cunting Athen-cunting-ry' at an Irish pub...

*shudders*

I am of discerning taste. as a guitarist there are a number of songs that you grow to hate

anything by oasis (actually everyone should hate these)
smoke in the water (unless actually played by deep purple)
today by the smashing pumpkins
wonderful tonight
layla
(, Tue 23 Sep 2008, 12:37, Reply)
if by 'Green Fields of France'
you mean the hideous 'Willie McBride' then NOOOOOOOO - rusty shrapnel's too good for him.
(, Tue 23 Sep 2008, 12:37, Reply)
I saw
a good acoustic version of Stand By Me and even joined-in the singalong of the chorus... perfect if it's that type of gig and people are gonna be a bit pissed :)

I do acoustic covers of Incubus tracks - A Certain Shade of Green (their version is online I'm sure) and Megalomaniac.

Also Creep by Radiohead cos it's a classic, and great with two guitars.

Hope that helps :)

Edit: looking at my set list, I can also recommend Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You (lovely chords and surprisingly easy for those who like a pint when they play) and Fall At Your Feet by Crowded House, with or without vocal harmony.

Oh, I see! Thank you for clearing that up for me, do you know if he works the UK at all? I would like to see him!

EDIT:

@Pooflake: I can send you the lyrics to 'The BumBumWilly' song and 'Internet Pornography' from a band I used to be in called 'The Rudie Boys'. You can make up your own music.

Respect
To anyone who can pull off a good version of Little Wing acoustically.
(, Tue 23 Sep 2008, 12:50, Reply)
My bro
plays Little Wing beautifully. Puts me into a trance.

Castles Made Of Sand is another lully one.

Led Zep have a few good acoustic ones, besides the obvious Stairway to Heaven, which makes me want to run around screaming... Gallows Pole, Going to California, Ramble On, What and What Should Never Be... and Bron Y Aur, another one which my bro plays which makes me go all sighy.

How bout Man Of Constant Sorrow?

(, Tue 23 Sep 2008, 13:39, Reply)
may i recommend...
...from my own acoustic sets:

'Eternal Life' by Jeff Buckley (hitting the high notes at the end is always impressive).

'Tribute' and 'Fuck Her Gently' by Tenacious D always go down a storm if you can hit the right frame of mind to sing them.

And my personal favourite, 'Preaching the End of the World' by Chris Cornell. It's on his first solo album 'Euphoria Morning' and it's marvellous. The chords are a bastard but it's a great song.

: )

Yeah, Ace of Spades.

I know this is an old link, but it's still the funniest thing on googlevids.

@Vipros - Man Of Constant Sorrow is one of those songs that if I hear, I just can't stop myself wailin' and a-hollering along with. Good job I'm not going to the gig...

Topical

Scattered Black and White - Elbow, because it's beautiful.

Mountains - Biffy Clyro, sounds good acoustic and looks fairly easy to play (says a non musician)

I'm guessing a beer and cider audience would like something a little folky...

BERNARD! BERNARD! BERNARD!
Oh, and Oh, the Guilt by Nirvana might work. And, then again, it might not.

French Disco by Stereolab.

House of the Rising Sun, obviously.

Wonder Stuff songs ought to work, too.

@ Gunther...

'Got The Time' - what a track! - I used to cover that when I was in a 'metal' band years ago...

In fact, I was going to use that song in my post:

www.b3ta.com/questions/foodsabotage/post251324

but opted for 'caught in a mosh' instead.

and @ Enzyme...I know I haven't been about much but where have you been? Good suggestions btw :)
(, Tue 23 Sep 2008, 16:55, Reply)
Got the time
started ticking in my head this afternoon, but as the version I mentioned above.

However, whenever I have it playing in my head it's always "got another chick, chick, chicken in my head..."
(, Tue 23 Sep 2008, 17:31, Reply)
I once heard
Crazy Little Thing Called Love played by a bloke on a double bass, with a rather toothsome Doris on vocals (fuck the guitarist, he was ugly). Top song.

Can I aslo suggest 'I don't want your problems, go and commit suicide' by Lawnmower Death?

I've been mainly lurking: I'm beginning to lose faith in QoTW, and /offtopic is a bit fluffeh for my tastes...

@Enzyme
I have to say there have been real stinkers of QoTW lately, particularly the current one....

Is the suggestions board even read by mods?
(, Wed 24 Sep 2008, 14:46, Reply)
This will sound very silly, but
I reckon you could have a great deal of fun with this song.

Let's get this out of the way first: Yes, it's by Chris de Ducking Burgh, the main at the very top of Bill Bailey's scale of evil.

However, it's the most overblown, overproduced, pompous song I think I know at this moment. It's also impressively religious, except for the fact that Chris de Burgh apparently has a direct line to give God advice. This fanmade video is also impressive in it's pomposity, but hey, can't win them all.

I think that, acoustically, a lot of fun could be had in arranging it in a call-and-response style between two singers, one as the narrator, and the other as the voices of God and the Devil.

Also, listen to the damn chorus. Pompous is not the word. Done right, it'd be a fun parody.

Besides, the version in my head is done by Tenacious D with David Grohl returning as The Devil from the Tribute video, but enough of that.

Also, I second Camoflage, truly and deeply.
(, Wed 24 Sep 2008, 21:22, Reply)
It's wierd...
But I did a joke post t'other day about the camouflage song...

you know what? - I'm gonna do it! - I think fate may be involved somewhere here...
(, Wed 24 Sep 2008, 21:55, Reply)
Woo for Camouflage!
Do I win a coconut for suggesting that?

Today my beloved was learning Sinatra's "My Way" as a favour to someone for their leaving party. I've been hearing it on a loop all afternoon. I am ready to dig up Sinatra, cunt him in the fuck, then rebury him. Fucking F#7.
