What's the best film you've seen recently?
I haven't seen much, but I watched Pineapple Express last night and rather enjoyed it. It was a good stoner movie with an explosive final half hour.

My favourite film that I've seen recently would have to be Duel - Stephen Spielberg's first ever movie. Did you know he shot the whole thing in like 12 days?

I won't be watching it again in a hurry though - its pretty fucked up!!!

I went to see Let the Right One In last night. It's very good - and I dreamt about vampires afterwards. Bronson was also good, as was Il Divo. I think that's all the recent ones.
I'm really looking forward to In the Loop, too.

Slumdog Millionaire for me.
When I first watched it, I thought it was good, but not fantastic. Then, the more I thought about it, the more I realised how much I had enjoyed it.
Watchmen was pretty good, but too damn long!

took me a while to remember what I'd seen recently....
I finished reading it a couple of days before seeing it. I thought it was fucking brilliant. Apart from Ozymandius, who was a bender.

saw Let the Right One In on Monday - it was a very good film, and I'm not normally into vampire flicks.

Was pretty damn scary. Complete with the Blair Witch-esque *you're actually there* style of filming.

if you enjoyed [REC] please avoid Quarantine - it's pants!

I tend to avoid American remakes of foreign language films anyway, but thanks for confirming my suspicions!

The 12-year-old mimsy shot in LtROI was a bit unexpected, wasn't it?
There's me, a single bloke seeing a film on my own... and that comes on... and I think, "I bet everyone else in the cinema'll be looking at me now..."

One line reviews:
9 Pounds: Sentimental claptrap, but made the wife and I cry salty tears
Gran Torino: Clint Eastwood in top form on both sides of the camera, unexpectedly moving too
Role Models: Very funny in places, some unfortunate drops in the pace though
Yes Man: Watch it if you need a little inspiration in your life.

That film is fucking fantastic.
Scrub Slumdog, Gran Torino is the best film I've seen recently. (Can't believe I forgot it)
"I blow a hole in your face and then I go in the house... and I sleep like a baby. You can count on that. We used to stack fucks like you five feet high in Korea... use you for sandbags"

can't believe I forgot Gran Torino and Taken!
both excellent.

I know! Though afterwards I read about the back story and it turns out she used to be a boy, so I felt slightly less weird about it. Thats why she kept telling him she wasn't a girl. Though the actress playing her was a girl, and I'm guessing that was her mudge we saw...ok, still feel a bit weird.

The only film I've seen recently, I knew it would be good because Clint's in it.

of a new DVD player today, and intend to spend this evening watching a copy of 'Mongol' that my brother has lent me.
How very B3ta.

Well, in fairness, it was only a brief shot, and it'd be easy enough to do with a dummy... but... yeah.
I'd heard about her sex being different in the novel - but, within the context of the film, I don't think that that was brought out or needed to be. Not being a girl could cover being a vampire...

Totally agreed. I put it down to the fact that it was slightly arthouse. You can do or show pretty much any kind of nastiness if you call it "art". Just look at Tracey Emin.

But I also finally got round to seeing The Prestige and I loved it so much it hurts.

it was to see Anvil: The Story of Anvil (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1157605/). It's a documentary, essentially it's Spinal Tap but for real - still just as funny though. I can't remember the last time I left the cinema with such a smile on my face, the ending is just immense.
Nine Queens (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0247586/) was the last decent film I saw which I caught late night on BBC2 I think. It's a Spanish film about a couple of con artists. Very clever and slick and again, a quality ending.

The Prestige was let down by its ending. Retrospectively, that ruined the whole thing.
I mean, really. It was a hell of a cop-out - as if the writers had realised they had a problem to solve, but couldn't be bothered with a decent solution so asked a passing child to do it.
( , Thu 16 Apr 2009, 13:00, Reply)

Yeah, that was kind of annoying, I was hoping we'd find out it was an amazing trick, not some sci-fi malarky.
Not enough to ruin the film for me though.
( , Thu 16 Apr 2009, 13:11, Reply)

Strengthening my current opinion that Spanish films are brilliant. It was the first time in ages I've been genuinely scared watching a film.
