Who's Jimmy Hendrix?

(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:05, Reply)
A famous triangle player from Milton Keynes.
I'm surprised you don't know him. He did a lot of publicity work, bigging up the local area.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:09, Reply)
Lies, milton keynes wasn't around 40 years ago.

(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:13, Reply)
He was mainly talking about
some of the old pubs to be found in the area - a subject very close to your heart.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:24, Reply)
<pedant>
it was actually, has been around for 43 years
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:33, Reply)
Fucking Johnny-come-lately doesn't know JACK about the M to the K, yo.

(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:36, Reply)
Your sig!!!

(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:44, Reply)
Well they're squeezing every last drop of money out of him.

(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:08, Reply)
Actually it's not like that, susprisingly.
His stepsister Janie now runs the estate after decades of legal wrangling - the quality control over releases is now superb, everything they've put out since she took over* has been fucking brilliant.
Not like the slew of shit churned out in the aftermath of his death (pretty much all of which I bought as a teenage uberfan gaylord).

*like the recently released and previously unheard Live in Paris LP
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:11, Reply)
This always happens
eventually they'll find some more Beatles songs that weren't good enough to release back in the 60's and make an album out of them.

If you chuck enough crap ingredients in a pot and call it stew, somebody will eat it.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:12, Reply)
*orders double portion of stew*
EDIT in the case of Hendrix is doesn't 'always' happen - this is the first legitimate release of studio sessions since the Cry of Love and War Heroes came out in 1970.

So nerr.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:13, Reply)
*Puts fingers in ears* lalalala i'm not listening...
yeah, I saw your reply to BGB just in time to see that I was talking out of my botty-bot (in regards to Hendrix).
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:16, Reply)
I liked some of the Jeff Buckley stuff released after his death
But most of it was stuff he was actually working on for an album so it did give a nice glimpse.
I'm sure he wouldn't have been happy though.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:15, Reply)
That's what The Cry of Love, War Heroes and Rainbow Bridge
were for Hendrix - nearly finished stuff that was about to come out.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:18, Reply)
I cant wait until Chesney Hawks dies
not because I think they'll find a wealth of un-released talent, just because of that fuck-awful song "one and only". What an arsehole.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:19, Reply)
hahaha
You're a man after my own heart, Drac.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:21, Reply)
Huzzah!
sorry to completely change the subject...but do you ever do anything to steak to tenderize it before cooking? I dont want to bash my meat (fnnar) but i've heard that certain marinades really give steak a soft texture, e.g. soy sauce.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:24, Reply)

(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:25, Reply)
Nothing at all.
Pathetically, other than definitely 'resting' the fucker for a good few minutes once you've coooked it, the most 'revelatory' piece of advice I have on the subject is always to cook them from room temperature.

In terms of ensuring tenderness, I just buy expensive steaks....
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:41, Reply)
I do all that as well.
I dont think i'll bother messing with a nice bit of meat, soy sauce would probably change the taste too much.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:44, Reply)
Definitely
Who wants a fucking Chinese steak?

NB I'm not actually offering everyone Chinese steaks, sorry if it came across like that.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:48, Reply)
not before
but during cooking - a little soy sauce, a drop of Worcester sauce, and a little drop of tabasco. some butter in the oil is good as well.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 16:56, Reply)
That is a truly inspirational piece, actually

(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:22, Reply)
i'm quite funny sometimes, but I could never do stand-up
I managed about 5 mins of the FHM stand-up awards on TV yesterday. Like Monty once said about himself, I really get embarassed for people. (does any of that make sense? my fingers arent typing what my brain is thinking)
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:28, Reply)
Yeah I go red for people.
I just think "Oh sit down in case you make a mistake".
Like that with singers too.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:30, Reply)
how the...you know, it's a bit ridiculous that they're coming out with this now
does that mean I've got to wait until she's 60 to see Tiffany on tour again?
bollocks I say
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:14, Reply)
see above
Legal wrangling has held this up for fucking yonks.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:15, Reply)
what's that got to do with the price of tea in china

(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:26, Reply)
Nothing...
... but did you know Tiffany appeared nude in Playboy in 2002? And she'd had implants - I just googled it so it must be true.

(I think I'm alone now...)
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:38, Reply)
I heard....
...it was just going to be some Hendrix outtakes with vocals overdubbed by an array of artists such as Phil Collins, Bowie and Pink.

Hawkwind were lined up but pulled out at the last minute.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:32, Reply)
Oh that sounds ace, I'm off to buy it
I love tributes and collaborations.
Like that bit when george Michael goes "Ladies and gentlemen... MR ELTON JOHN!"
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:34, Reply)
Shame your dad didn't
pull out at the last minute.

*EDIT* ...and my work is done...
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:44, Reply)
You bastard.
Totally got me there.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:48, Reply)
Sweet Mother of God
Have you heard Everybody Hurts by Help for Haiti?

And what's with these charity cover versions.
Band Aid and USA for Africa didn't cover songs...

...thank God it's them instead of you!

Self-serving sheisters in 'sing shit song' shocker?
Trying saying that out loud after you've had a few...
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:56, Reply)
I think I have his version
of Bleeding Heart on a blues compilation somewhere. If it's the same one, it's not actually that great, the band seems to be struggling to get their groove together. His version of Sunshine, however, is pretty fucking awesome.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 14:58, Reply)
He did a cracking version of Sunshine
at the Royal Albert Hall, and again on the Lulu show.

/nerd
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 15:00, Reply)
Lulu?
Isn't that the version where they stop playing Hey Joe about half-way through and then launch into Sunshine?
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 15:02, Reply)
That's the one.
Ooooh, rebellious. The TV people went mental apparently. Rather like the controversial Doors performance of 'Light My Fire' where naughty Morrison left 'higher' in, having promised not to.

Things were very innocent in those pre Bill Grundy Show years, eh?
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 15:05, Reply)
I think The 'Orrible 'Oo still lead the way on that one
Moon supposedly bribed the stage technicians on the Smothers Brothers' show to let him do the pyrotechnics himself on that drumkit...
Edit: Actually, just remembered that Moon also nearly outed Closet Shirter Russel Harty in 1972 on the latter's show...clearly you couldn't take him anywhere.
Edit Edit: Found the Hendrix clip in question.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 15:08, Reply)
the Harty appearance is fucking MAGIC
I've got a DVD of the fabled San Fransisco Cow Palace gig where Moon collapses behind the kit and some lad from the crowd takes over on drums. It's rather funny, albeit terrible quality.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 15:42, Reply)
Think I've found bits of that on Youtoob
At least, there's a clip of them playing Smokestack Lightning with Scott Halpin filling in for Moon. You can tell the poor lad's a bit intimidated by the astronomically-sized drumkit, but it sounds pretty good otherwise.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 17:08, Reply)
Jim Morrison
Was a dicksplash and I hate the Doors more than Bowie.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 15:16, Reply)
He really was a massive helmet
But his band were pretty good and their style of music suits me better than Bowie's weedy rubbish. But I am not disagreeing, here.

Fucking self-styled 'poet'. What an arsewipe.
(, Tue 2 Feb 2010, 15:42, Reply)
Up himself, it's true.
Great voice though, particularly at a time when so many Lennon-and-McCartneyites sounded like 12-year olds singing through their noses. And if you can get past the pretentious 'poetry,' the live version of The End from the 1970 Madison Square gig is pretty fucking epic.
