a packet of Haribo Tangfastics - anyone want one? There are lots to choose from.
Question: Best and worst bands you've ever seen and why.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:06, 90 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
Really enjoyed the EODM at Bristol a few months ago; Best? George Clinton/Paliament/Funkadelic at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. Great venue, awesome band.
Edit: first time was with Lili Haydn, Awesome musician - www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDIUGW_hZVQ
Last time was with 5 lead guitarists, multi layered solos and beyond..

fucking dreadful noise. no talent whatsoever. I led the booing at the SOAD gig that they supported at Brixton Academy.
Best: Probably have to be Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation, somewhere in Bristol. The man has such an incredible voice and such presence. I was literally speechless afterwards.
Honorable mentions for worst band ever: Reeko - local Exeter punk scene. Fucking shite
Starsailor - seriously fucking dull.
The Upper Room - middle of the road shit, but pranced about like they were guns and roses.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:09, Reply)
best band: ooo, perhaps soundgarden? REM surprised me by being good
Worst: some awful band in a pub in cardiff the other week, they had a really good name, too. Smashing Pumpkins at Glasto were disapointing, especially since they are one of my favouritist bands, ever
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:11, Reply)
and Bobby Gillespie has excellent taste in music. I'm not a fan of their band but I like the cut of their collective jib.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:22, Reply)
I was at a party with Gillespie once and he looked like a drowned rat. I also once saw him in my local, where he looked like a drowned and partially decomposed rat.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:30, Reply)
That by that time of the night, he'd have got his rocks off. Honey.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:36, Reply)
AC/DC, the Stooges or NY hip hop crew called the Arsonists who were truly incredible. Motorhead's 30th Anniversary show was also brilliant as was every one of the 8 million shows by Thee Hypnotics I went to in the 80s. Gaye Bykers on Acid were excellent at Treworgey too. Also Ozric Tentacles offshoot The Ullulators at Barton Stacey airfield fee festival 89 or 90; they played two nights on the trot and were incredible (and v different) both nights.
Worst: Hmmmm - possibly Tortoise. I think that's the only gig I've walked out of 15 minutes in. They were totally fucking awful.
EDIT what the fuck am I talking about - best ever was Hawkwind at the Treworgey Tree Fayre 89: it's available on DVD if anyone cares. However I was 15 and chock full of LSD at the time so my recollections are more than a little misty-eyed.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:11, Reply)
I thought they'd just split up. Are these Ullulators worth checking out then?
Also, re Hawkwind: you lucky, lucky bastard.
(, Wed 3 Mar 2010, 10:30, Reply)
I don't think enough superlatives justifies them live. Really such an imaginative and technically amazing band and seeing them live only underlines that.
Worst: I must apologise to many /offtopic folk, but the Foo Fighters really don't do it for me. Bland, uninspired dirge with 1 or 2 hits thrown in. They also sounded terrible, and yer man from Nirvana has a rather high opinion of himself.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:14, Reply)
their best stuff was on the first couple of albums IMO.
Dave Grohl is best as a drummer, as we can see from Them Crooked Vultures
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:15, Reply)
although Bigelf's Cheat the Gallows was also awesome, and the second Wolfmother album.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:22, Reply)
but the site has the lead singer in a top hat which is clearly win

and rockingness. the guy's voice might annoy some, but I love it.
listen to The Evils of Rock and Roll or Counting Sheep

music recommendation, especially now the BBC are being cunts
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:32, Reply)
have an opinion on them, I think everyone else has enough opinion on them for me
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:37, Reply)
yes, that's probably my favourite gig ever
I disagree on Foo Fighter, bloody love 'em. Also: Dave Grohl=HAWT
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:16, Reply)
Biggest load of tosh I ever stood through.
If it wasn't for the fact I was double monged, I'd have gone to see someone else, as it was, I needed to stay with someone who would see me back to my tent.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:21, Reply)
was that when they were being all neurotic about being popular? '97 was OK Computer, so they played lots of that
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:26, Reply)
on the television at some festival or other and have to say 'bland, uninspired dirge' summed them up perfectly.
But then we all know you're tone deaf, Finners old boy.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:26, Reply)
O.K. perhaps a bad performance from the ratty man, but still, what has been committed to record by Radiohead is anything but uninspired bland! Foo Fighters on the other hand...
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 21:49, Reply)
Best - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Worst - Dirty pretty things - I can't describe just how awful they were.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:23, Reply)
but I barely remember watching the Chillis. I remember them being really good, but couldn't say what about it
I can remember a screen with jellyfish on it behind them...
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:24, Reply)
worst band? easily The Killers - my missus dragged me to Berlin to see them this time last year. whoever the sound team was had the set-up for an outdoor concert in an indoor arena. that and they're just shit
best would probably be Red Hot Chilli Peppers at Murrayfield in 2004 - i was working there, but it was bloody fantastic.
combined with spending the couple of hours before they came on in the exec boxes watching england lose to france made a great day all round
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:26, Reply)
turns out I also quite fancy Sue Perkins

They were just really good and she can really really sing!
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:31, Reply)
She's still fit but for a while she went double-denim for the ladies.
She's back to being fine again.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:32, Reply)
They have been going for ages, so that could explain the double denim look! The 80's wern't always kind!
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:35, Reply)
She knew what she was doing...
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:39, Reply)
The Dandy's were shit when I saw them.
Play song. Say nothing. Play song. Say nothing.
And on it went.
The oddest gig I saw was Jet, who, for reasons best known to themselves, played 'Are you gonna be my girl' first - that'll be 90% of their audience upping and leaving to go and see someone else the moment they'd finished their 'hit'.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:35, Reply)
Worst: Definitely Bring me the Horizon. Kerrang Tour last year. Dir En Grey and MSI who I was there for, were good, while BMTH were even worse than I thought they'd be.
Best: Well I'm hoping that Iron Maiden at Sonisphere this year will take this title
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:35, Reply)
they will be awesome this time
Woo! Sonisphere!
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:36, Reply)
yeah, saw Maiden & Anthrax a while back, was really good gig and Maiden have that cheesy but secretly quite like them quality of good old fun metal
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:39, Reply)
I have three times bought tickets for Maiden and 3 times been thwarted, I rather worry if I'm going to jinx the entire festival!
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 18:10, Reply)
In about 1988 at Wembley
Worst: Gary Moore at Hammersmith in 2009
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:36, Reply)
To think that for over a decade, the last thing you heard was Dave A. Stewart and Annie Lennox.
You have my sympathy.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:43, Reply)
I would rather admit I was a paedo, than tell you lot some of the bands I have seen.
Nowadays I rely on Monty to tell me what to listen to.

And allow yourself to get exposed to all manner of wonderful new sounds!

I need to know where to go next with Tractor. Is there a similar band or newer Tractor CD to grab?
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:58, Reply)
I am currently obsessed by Mumford and Sons. What should I listen to next?
Yours sincerely
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 18:00, Reply)
the sister of the bass player from Mumford and Sons is a very good friend of mine.
also, try Seth Lakeman if you haven't heard him already
other suggestions are: John Butler Trio, Dave Matthews Band, Ash Grunwald, Xavier Rudd.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 19:21, Reply)
"I'll haunt you", possibly the best break up song EVAH! Creepy isn't in it. The first truly venomous folk song I've ever heard.
(, Wed 3 Mar 2010, 11:08, Reply)
Testament, shit band, shit sound, shit
Best - Oooh probably Metallica when they were still good on the justice for all tour
both - Fear Factory, dreadful dreadful albums but blindingly good live band!
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:38, Reply)
they started the donnington 96 lineup and I have never heard a band so tight and focussed at 11am...
Actually, that was a good day all round - Korn's first UK gig (in place of Red Kross) and a great Sepultura gig (albeit without Max as Gloria's kid had died that week), the Kiss reunion and Ozzy (who, it has to be said, was a bit underwhelming). Hell, even Dog Eat Dog fitted in with the sunshine-and-beer atmosphere.
(, Wed 3 Mar 2010, 11:39, Reply)
Best: Metallica. I've seen them twice, just absolutely stunning.
Worst: Society 1 at Download 2005 were one of the worst, music was awful. Underoath at the same Festival, I got jump kicked by some little emo shit wearing boots, then at the end the band asked everyone to pray with them. Guns n Roses at Download 2006, don't think any explanation is needed there. Suicide Silence are also wank, my friend highly recommended them, and they were just boring.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:42, Reply)
Anyone seen Hayseed Dixie? Might watch them next week, tickets still available...
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 17:46, Reply)
You will have an awesome time, persuade friends to go with you, drink and get ready to get involved with some whoopin' and a hollerin'.
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 22:23, Reply)
You will not regret it. I've seen them a couple of times and they are just peachy. "I love the moonshiners daughter cos she makes me liquor all night". What's not to love?
(, Wed 3 Mar 2010, 9:45, Reply)
fried eggs can go fuck their grannies
(, Tue 2 Mar 2010, 18:22, Reply)
Fizzy cherries thanks.
Best live band - Big Country
Worst - Skindred. Seen them in support 3 times and they just get worse.
(, Wed 3 Mar 2010, 9:46, Reply)
Though I still kick myself to this day for not getting off my arse and going to see The Who before the God of Bass Guitar that was The Ox popped his clogs.
Still, seeing John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (with no less than Buddy Whittington on guitar and Peter Green's Splinter Group in support) was a real privelige, and in terms of putting on a great show, Emily Loizeau was fucking awesome. I was also lucky to catch one of Hooverphonic's last gigs before their singer quit and she sang a stripped-down arrangement of Inhaler so perfectly beautifully I thought I'd cry like the big shirter I am. And then the first time I saw Ian Siegal, his stage presence was sufficiently powerful to distract my attention from the hot Russian sisters I'd been talking to earlier that evening.
Think the best one might have to be Brian Wilson though. I know he looks like a frightened muppet on stage, but he and his band did manage a superb - nay, sublime rendition of the entire Pet Sounds album. And who else could get the entirety of the Festival Hall to its feet dancing to old surf songs?
Worst? Well, fuck me, I've played a lot of gig nights at my student union building so I've seen some real abominations. But if I had to pick a professional band...I saw Elbow shortly after they released their first album, mostly on my sister's recommendation. And after they'd played Anyday Now I found the rest of the show really kinda boring.
(, Wed 3 Mar 2010, 10:27, Reply)
I'd have to say that the best were:
The Cure, Glastonbury '95 - just amazing.
Kiss, Donnington 96 (the first time they'd had the original line-up and makeup in about 20 years) - ok the music's not great, Ace Frehley shouldn't do five minute solos as he's not good enough, but the spectacle was great and you could see why they were so huge in the 70s - the show was amazing.
I'd also rate Ozric Tentacles at the Town And Country in about 1997, but I was blitzed out of my mind at the time and don't remember that much.
Most disappointing? Chilli Peppers in 2005/6 - just didn't seem like they wanted to make the effort, went through the numbers and refused to play a lot of the older stuff people wanted to hear. Nice to be able to say I have seen them live, but kinda wish I hadn't bothered.
Worst band ever? Some experimental Japanese Thrash Metal band at Glasotnbury '95 - lineup was two drummers a bassist and no guitar. The blurb for the band proudly exclaimed that none of the members could play before they formed the band..it showed. I swear to god once set of lyrics being screamed against atnonal tub-thumping was "I can see my heart in the hippo"... yikes.
(, Wed 3 Mar 2010, 11:32, Reply)
I'd been able to get to Pink Floyd for the PULSE gig, or even to the Live 8 reunion. Now that the keyboard player is six feet under, the odds on them doing another Waters/Gilmour lineup gig is slim to none. Bugger.
Would also love to see Pearl Jam live, but I think that whilst they still rock, it's a shame I'll never see them in a small club - I also missed Nirvana playing Leeds Student Union by about 6 months and then Kurt died, so that's pretty much setting a pattern - miss a great gig, then either have to catch them when it's not quite the same, or when someone's died. Arse.
