MAN vs GOD.
Angkor Wat vs Angel Falls. Valley of the Kings vs the Grand Canyon. Teotihuacan vs Ayers Rock.

You get the idea. For me the works of man win hands down over the wonders of nature. I'm infinitely more interested in and impressed by, say, the New York skyline than I am by the mountains of New Zealand. But what about you, you insufferable cunts?

I've actually hiked to the top of ayers rock before that got banned.

Nature is far more beautiful than anything man made.
I've been known to get weak at the knees at a beautiful landscape.

That's the thing with souls -
the more you stir them the wetter they get.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:02, Reply)
manmade stuff stirs the soul too
I'm not a religionist, but it's hard not to be moved by artistry and skill involved in a cathedral for example.

Visit the Sagrade Familia in Barcelona (or many of Gaudi's buildings) and if you aren't moved by it then you need a beating.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:09, Reply)
Gaudi's buildings are a bit too gaudy for me.

(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:11, Reply)
some are admittedly gaudy
some of it is genius though

I got a little off my point. I was mainly talking about cathedrals and stuff.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:12, Reply)
I think you missed a pun...
Cathedrals are ace, I always wondered how the architect must have felt knowing they would never see their design realised as they would be long dead by the time it was finished.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:13, Reply)
I deliberately glossed over it
it is quite weird. I can never get my head around how they actually built them. How much they planned out what shape the stonework would be, and how many bits and what shape they should be.

amazing things.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:15, Reply)
More so than the random by-products
of tectonic activity, for that very reason, if you ask me.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:28, Reply)
I'm torn
I like both things for different reasons
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:31, Reply)
The cathedral was designed by hanging weights on a lattice work of string
thuis creating an upside down skelton for the building. This apparently showed how the loads worked together.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:55, Reply)
I've seen the model
fucking awesome idea. the weights were scaled to represent the loads from the structure, and the strings described the perfect arch shape to support them.

I'm with you, Vippers old bean.
Up close, Stonehenge is incredibly powerful. More so, to me, than a nice view.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:12, Reply)
good man
good topic of debate too.

I've got to do some work now unfortunately.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:13, Reply)
Stonehenge is little more than a few stones put together
What makes it impressive is the wondering how they managed to arrange them like that without any technology.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:15, Reply)
that's the beauty of manmade stuff
particularly stuff like that. Not only is it awesome to look at, but it is thought provoking as well.

I do enjoy a good landscape, and natural features can be pretty amazing, but in a different way to manmade.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:16, Reply)
That's the point I was originally trying to make
Great buildings, bridges or ships are massively impresive, but after the original "wow" the next reaction is to try and understand the mechanics of it. Nature is affecting at a more basic level.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:42, Reply)
'Stonehenge is little more than a few stones put together'
is perhaps the most fatuous statement I've ever read on here.

If only!
So often they defile Nature.

Although you have something here. There is something about the English cathedral which seeme to emulate the majesty of nature - as is intended I suppose.
Picture a field, and in it a solitary oak grown to full size. Now think of Salibury's spire. Which would you look at for longer?
And Durham - or Boston - cathedrals look like the rocks faith claims to be built on.

Pyramids are obviously man-made mountains or hill etc - but to my mind that is irrelevant when assessing the impact of said edifices.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:23, Reply)
I think both can be impressive.
There's something awe inspiring about being in the mountains but then the same can be said for the great buildings of the world.
I would say that nature is almost always beautiful. Where as most places that are built by man are rubbish.

I don't think that lessens the achievment.
Plus the "cute" cats that you like so much are the result of decades of selective breeding.

I don't like cats, myself

Very pretty
I had never read it before; did you write it?
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:28, Reply)
Written by a woman called Gertrude
but sung by Patsy Cline.
I just like the idea of someone just sat there doing crafts and us being in awe of it.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:30, Reply)
Yep
There is not prove about it happening like that, but it makes me feel happy thinking that that's what happened :)

Bucket - quickly!
Jeez Roota, you should have put a saccharin alert on that.

I love greenery, I love it when the temperature is around 20 degrees and the sky is bright blue
But I love pretty man-made dresses. And I don't know which I love more.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:28, Reply)
Cock?

Har har :(

I love when it's warm and sunny
And I can wear lovely dresses.

Today is going to be a good day!

Today is not going to be a good day.
I have my first exam :(
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:36, Reply)
Good luck, good luck, good luck to you!
It'll be a good day, you'll do it brilliantly and you're closer to finish your exams!
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:58, Reply)
Thank you...
I'm not convinced but I'll try and keep calm.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:01, Reply)
You'll do FINE.
Best of luck. Remember the big picture - don't get bogged down by trying to shoehorn your revised quotes and facts if they aren't 100% relevant to the question.

It's text
So it;s really "WHAT IS THIS YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS OFF BY HEART"

I'm sitting in bed. I'm sure there's something arbitrary that should happen before I get my arse to the library, but I'm not sure what it is.

Plus my hair is the perfect fusion of when nature and nurture fight
It was black, but growing out my natural colour (light brown)

Dyed it purple last night. Most of my hair is still black. The roots are kind of ribena coloured.
Hurrah.

I love greenery too.
*coughs up lung*
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:47, Reply)
-offers fag-
My lungs are starting to hurt. I've only been smoking "good" cigarettes, though, this usually happens after about a week and a half of Pall Malls...
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:48, Reply)
what qualifies as good?

(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:53, Reply)
Expensive - which is why I bracketted good
Vogues, Sobranie, Ziganov.

I have 3, 9 and 15 left respectively, and my friend owes me a pack. Bingo.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:56, Reply)
I have never experienced these cigarettes
when I smoked straights it was generally B&H, unless I could get hold of Camels or Lucky Strike
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:01, Reply)
Lucky Strike ftw
Also I loved Fortuna a Spanish brand; but rollies are far, far superior and far, far cheaper
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:02, Reply)
Sadly this
I've just not got back in the habit of rolling. It's unbelievable how much you save...
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:03, Reply)
tastes nicer too

(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:06, Reply)
American Spirit is the best rolling tobacco
it's drier - more like straights - and less strong flavoured than most rolling baccy which I find overpowers the taste of hash/grass to an unacceptable degree.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:08, Reply)
I use drum gold these days
I can't abide rolling with baccy from straights, so your description doesn't move me
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:09, Reply)
I find rolling baccy soggy and too strongly-flavoured on the whole

(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:20, Reply)
but straight baccy is too dry and harsh
it's what you are used to though I suppose. I like the taste of rolling baccy. particularly with weed
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:23, Reply)
Vogues and Cocktails are lady-fags
One type is thin and the other is blended for "lady tastes" and pastel coloured.

I'd not had Ziganovs before someone reccommended them to me. They're delicious, and strong, but oh so expensive.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:03, Reply)
A pub near me in Fulham was selling 16 fags for £7:50 the other day!

(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:05, Reply)
£8.20 for 20 ;)

(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:09, Reply)
most of the girls I know smoke rollies
or Gayfair Shites
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:05, Reply)
Load of my friends smoke Marlboro Lights
Pah.

My two closest friends smoke Camel Blues and Marlboro Menthols. I change a lot, which is apparenlty quite bad.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:10, Reply)
smoking Sobranies if you are a man makes you gay.

(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:06, Reply)
Not black Russians
I bought a lovely boy I know and love a pack, wrapped in the Socialist Worker.

Damn you, pretty foreign boys :(
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:09, Reply)
Damn them indeed.

I'm more of a naturist myself
(Hur Hur)

I've a soft spot for mountains and valleys and rolling hills and all that crap. One of my favourite spots I've ever been to is Rannoch Moor - 50km2 of peat bog and the largest uninhabited area in the British Isles. Sounds perfect, doesn't it?

There are exceptions, obviously: even some of nature's most remarkable creations pale in comparison to the Gibson SG.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:45, Reply)
I like when Nature and man-made things collide well
Like the Grand Hotel in Llandudno.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:47, Reply)
Did a cliff fall on it?

(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:49, Reply)
No,
it fell on a cliff
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 9:52, Reply)
I don't know why
But I can't stop laughing at this.
(, Tue 18 May 2010, 10:00, Reply)
Me neither
But I'm always making myself laugh.
I'm easily amused.
