Quotes
I repeat lines from movies all of the time but rarely quote books, until today when I quoted a line from "Simply Sexual" by Kate Pearce simply stated "We'll see who ends up begging."

Last quote you uttered or wrote?

alt q: last book you read or book you're looking forward to?
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 15:44, 73 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
I know I believe in nothing, but it is my nothing

No more tears, it's a waste of good suffering!

"There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt."
from a computer game called Dawn of War

last book I read was a Poirot play adapted to novel form by someone other than Agatha Christie. Not bad, but not as good as the actual Poirot novels.

Currently reading The Prestige, which that film was based on
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 15:49, Reply)
What film?

(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:08, Reply)
I fucking hate Poirot, I really do.
In fact, all telivision based after the dinosaurs right up to WW2 is a bit shit.
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:00, Reply)
really?
I find the books to be rather good
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:01, Reply)
I've only seen the telly show, but I find it really really dull and borring.

(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:03, Reply)
I've always quite liked the tv show too
each to their own I suppose
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:07, Reply)
Yup, true =)
It's pretty much any murder/crime show on ITV3 that I can't stand, or that Alibi channel. When ever I crash 'round my Mum's place, we have a trade-off, one of those shows in exchange for me watching hollyoaks, and then we get to watch something 'neutral', normally something like Law'n'Order or House.
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:15, Reply)
I pretend that I don't like [erm, I the name escapes me now, the one where they get MPs and stuff to debate and awnser questions from people around the country].
In reality, I don't mind it, but I know my Ma' likes that show, so I use that as leverage so I can watch something like a cooking show.
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:18, Reply)
sounds like you've got a good system
I tend to mostly watch comedy stuff, or currently Legend of the Seeker (fairly awful swords and magic stuff with hot women)

however, I do have some guilty pleasures. I fucking love watching CSI (the vegas one), Sherlock Holmes, Poirot, and I hate to admit it but I've got sucked into Big Brother. hadn't happened since I left uni....
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:22, Reply)
I love food and cooking shows, I can watch them all day long without getting bored.
I find the whole thing fascinating, the only cooking shows I don't really like are the older ones, like Delia or Two Fat Ladies or the one with that old lesbian who's name begins with 'T'.

Other shows I like are; House, Hollyoaks, Law'n'Order, Scrubs, How I Meet Your Mother and...ermm... I'm sure there is more, I just can't think of any.

I used to watch telly all the time, but I hardly have time for it these days, or I'm more interested in doing other things.
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:39, Reply)
I'm the same with cooking shows
I got really gripped by Masterchef Australia when that was on. I recommend it.

I really can't stand soaps, and particularly Hollyoaks though. It completely does my head in.

That's pretty awesome, I like the fat guy who looks like that american magicion (from Pen'n'Teller).
I used to get quite annoyed watching that Food Network channel, the way a lot of them speak (eg, Racial Ray talks to you like you're 5 years old, and [is it gloria?] always talks about growing up in italy yet she moved to the states when she was 6), and how they would do things so different to us, like the weird mix of savory and sweet (Sweet Potato Pie, Bacon and Mayple Syrup, Cheese Waffles...etc), and the huge portions (I've seen Bearfoot Contessa cook what should be for 10 people, but only for 5*) but now I'm over those things and can enjoy them.

* I've kindda worked out that she must give the camera crew food.
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 17:04, Reply)
I find that american sweet/savoury thing weird too
on Stephen Fry in America he went to thanksgiving dinner at some guys house (they deep-fried a turkey) and they had a dish of mashed yams (sweet potato to us) and had melted marshmallows on top. what.the.fuck?
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 17:06, Reply)
I *think* I saw that.
Yeh', it's really strange. I love that "Greatest thing I've eaten" show where they get food-celebs to talk about the best food in the world. The #1 is normally deep fried. The guy from Ace Of Cakes choose deep-fried prawn heads. I do admit, that although it sounds grose, when I'm in cyprus and order garlic prawns, they normally come with (real) chips, and I love dipping a chip in the head and even sucking out the head-guts, but I couldn't eat the shell... although saying that, when I go japanise I normally order Soft Shell Crab Ta/maki, and that's lush.
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 17:10, Reply)
Prawn is my favorite meat.
When it comes weight-to-weight, I'd rather have prawn than any other meat.

I was in this nightclub and I saw this girl in the corner dancing by herself and looking a bit nervous
and I said "Who's that girl who's rockin' kicks? She's gotta be from out of town"

But I was on my own to so nobody was listening and a different girl near me gave me a funny look and walked off quickly to stand with her mates, and then they all started looking at me so I went home.

I donno, I was talking once with my mate about Nigella Lawson's dirty knickers, he asked me how much I would pay for hers, so I said a lot more than she would pay for mine.

I can't remember. Everything I say is an original Applebite gem.

(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:10, Reply)
I have not
at least, I don't think so
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:11, Reply)
You would remeber it makes the film look like a Disney movie
At one point he cuts out a girls tongue and lobs it across teh room then walk around with her decapitated head on his cock...you must have heard about the rats...
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:13, Reply)
I suspect I know what it is
and if so I haven't seen the film either.

just one of those things I haven't got round to watching
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:14, Reply)
Read the book
It's better than the film, apart from the chapters when he talks about music. Sadly it's the only good thing Brett Easton Ellis has done.
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 16:16, Reply)
I will do so
I'm glad I was thinking of the right thing

EDIT - Oh Catch 22. I love that book.

recommended I take it?

I fooked up a quoted joke earlier
But last night a friend was writing her resignation notice, and asked me if there was anything she should add on?

Turns out "I aim to misbehave" does not go down well with employers, as I found out at lunchtime, whoops!

And the last book I started reading was "Her Sister's Keeper", not finished it yet though

I am still reading Ian Kershaw’s masterpiece ‘Hitler’
It's huge and rather heavy going but an utterly brilliant piece of historical research. I am in awe of the amount of homework he must have done (Kershaw, not Hitler, ho ho). I've read a couple of other things whilst wrestling with Adolf, such as some Viking novel which was a bit formulaic and mediocre, sadly.

I fear the last quote I made was probably whilst pissed up last night; I'm pretty sure my chum and I relived some classic Cheech & Chong lines at one point.

I actually don't see the fuss about Withnail and I.
It's the sort of film that annoying students quote at each other. That said, the drugs bloke who's also the roadie chap in Wayne's World is one of my favourite people ever.
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 17:16, Reply)
the guy who plays him is in a superb beach boys tribute act called the Brighton Beach Boys
I love the film, but then I like many odd films where not a lot happens. I saw it at random the first time. Had never heard of it, or any of the fuss.

yay book thread
I just finished Blue Yellow Tibia, which was cool and now I want to read more stuff set in cold war Russia.

Still reading Powersat (Ben Bova) which is SHIT, but I'm going to finish it
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 17:02, Reply)
Last books I've read
apart from numerous history ones for study, was 'The Historian' which is about Dracula, and 'Kafka on the Shore' by Haruki Murakami.
