At the beginning of Spring I started to get very itchy, very puffy eyes, and was told that, suddenly, I've got hayfever. I'm taking my pills to reduce the sypmtoms, but still, the itchyness in my eyes really makes me wish I was blind and could move around and walk without having to open them.
Spring is the only season when the rain gives us a bit of a break in Manchester, and now I can't even enjoy that.
Is it going to be always like this or will it improve with time?
Which permanent things would you change to temporary and viceversa?

but if the stuff you are taking is still leaving you with symptoms then you need to try some different stuff.
Try Boots or Sainsburys or Tesco own brand non-browsy hayfever stuff. It's really cheap, and is the same as the more expensive stuff and it works.

It stops me sneezing and the itchyness in the throat, but doesn't help with the eyes.

But the little fucker will just keep coming back. Mine has gotten slightly better as I've gotten older, as has my mum's, although I do dose myself up on non-drowsy piriteze every day when I think I'll be spending time outside which gets rid of my symptoms completely. Also, wear sunglasses when you're out - sunny or not. You might look like a bit of a twat, but it stops your eyes from getting so bad.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 11:33, Reply)
I don't know why, but sunglasses help a lot.
I've just started having it, at my 30s, so by the time it gets better I'm going to be all old :(

I think I wished you luck last night, inamongst swearing at you, so I'll do it again. Good luck!

My grandma used to make crema catalana (similar to creme brulee, but from catalonia). It was the best in the world. I wish I had listened to her when she was teaching me cooking.
Still, I rather go for the salty than the sweet.

And I love honey. Any idea where I can get it in Manchester?
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:11, Reply)
Honey is regurgitated nectar, hayfever is caused by pollen, 2 very different things.
Hayfever is caused by pollen up the nasal cavity, so even if honey did help because of "trace levels of pollen" or some such nonsense, you would have to snort it not digest it.
Hayfever is generally caused by wind pollenated plants, honey is derived from insect pollenated plants.
These guys say it doesnt help: Rajan TV, Tennen H, Lindquist RL, Cohen L, Clive J (February 2002). "Effect of ingestion of honey on symptoms of rhinoconjunctivitis". Ann. Allergy Asthma Immunol. 88 (2): 198–203

You know, I'm learning so many things... The other day I learnt that bumblebees don't sting and live in buried places in the earth.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:31, Reply)
I didn't know that they don't sting. Does that mean I can stop running around with my hands in the air shrieking like a girl when I see one?
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:34, Reply)
I stopped doing it a couple of months ago, when I was laughed at and then explained. They're in fact very sweet insects. You can hold them on your hands and they'll walk around without flying away.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:36, Reply)
This involved catching insects, gassing them to death with ether and then pinning them out. I caught a giant bumble bee which woke up after I pinned it out! It was nightmarish, this large insect trying to move despite all the pins.
That night I had a dream that a giant bumble bee was pinning me out for display.

Poor thingy! I don't think I could do anything like that. I find sooooo creepy those buterflies collections.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:43, Reply)
Killing the flies was ok, but I had to collect 9 "orders" of insect, and 3 of each order. I felt really bad for the butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers and even the beetles.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:50, Reply)
I wouldn't mind the mosquitoes and flies. Or ants. Anything else would be a no from me. I'm glad we didn't have anything like that, as I'm sure I'd have failed that subject.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:52, Reply)
I only threw it out 4 years ago when I moved into my house. I have been especially nice to bumblebees since that awful collection.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:56, Reply)
I have a few of them coming to my balcony, now that I have flowers on it. They're very soft too.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:59, Reply)
make them drowsy in the freezer, and attach thread to them, so we'd have bees on a leash.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:44, Reply)
if you had enough they could go forth and do your bidding. Or you could re-enact "James and the giant peach" with bumblers instead of seagulls.

Hayfever ruins may life every 4 years or so (a bit like the world cup ROLFMAYO!!11)
Which is why I know a bit about it. My worst year for it was the year I learnt to drive, which was a complete bastard.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:28, Reply)
not messing with your nose and eyes helps a lot. It may be tempting to blow until your red in the face (CHRIST!) or rub those eyes raw, but just leave them alone and they will come to terms with things.
I've also experimented with leaving my bedroom window open everynight (seems to slowly adjust my body to the outside morning) and also drinking plenty water seems to help.
I've tried the honey thing but that never done much, and also anti-histamines but they make my nose itchy. Fucking pollen.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:09, Reply)
My only problem is with the eyes really. Maybe I should put honey eye patches in my eyes before going to sleep, and then honey drops in the morning.

I've had it since I was 5 but it's started to get better as I have grown older.
You can get eye drops to help with the eyes but I always found they just made mine worse as a kid.
To help relive itchy eyes you can try sitting with some slices of cold cucumber or some cold used teabags on your eyes. This really helped me when my eyes were bad.
Optrex is also quite good for soothing sore itchy eyes.
Most of all, do not rub them, this will only exacerbate the situation.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:26, Reply)
But it's so difficult to stop my hands doing it.
I thought about the cucumber or cold used tea bags (or camomille infusion soaked cotton). I'll give it a try, although I think what works in there is the fact that you have your eyes closed, rather than anything else.
(, Tue 13 Jul 2010, 12:29, Reply)

Spring here can get pretty nasty on the pollen count, but I've found that anti-histamines work well and over the years I've been able to clear up the allergy sypmtoms within a week of onset. I think you've just got to find what's right for you.
Permanent to temporary? Hmmm, I'd probably turn my girlfriends sex drive to permanent, and from permanent to temporary I dont' know what I would change.
