I've been in Glasgow several times and never liked the place, but we have a wedding there on Sat, so we're going from today. Anything exciting you think I could be doing in that city? Have into account that I've already got on my list "drink beer" and "stay in the hotel watching tv if it's raining"
Are you doing anything exciting this weekend?

being the operative word. The Glaswegians are very creative when it comes to improvising weapons.

You could drape yourself around one and pretend to be Amy Pond.
I like Glasgow but it's a shit place to be at night if you have kids as all the eat-out places don't seem to admit children after 8pm.

I've found it more and more depressing.
I'm glad we've got a good hotel, with breakfast and dinner included. I've never travelled like that in my life, but I think that city deserves it.

I know of one - in the West End, by the Botanic Gardens, and thats it (used to be a tea-stall as well)

Bristol and Bath. And I am going to have a lovely time, and it is NOT GOING TO RAIN.
I may be failing to convince myself of this...
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:35, Reply)
and I've never been in Bath. Can we change places? I'm sure it's going to rain in Glasgow.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:37, Reply)
and I haven't been to either for ages. I was really looking forward to it until my parents decided to crash it. I have to put up with them now instead of doing cool and interesting things on my own.
I'd still rather not swap though - I've only been to Glasgow once and it was quite unnerving...
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:40, Reply)
definitely go to Bath at some point. In the autumn is nice, when there are fewer tourists.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:40, Reply)
I've been wanting to go to there for years, but everytime I plan it, something happens. Now that Mark's going to be living in Worthing, I think we could call Bath a good middle point for 1 weekend.

It is sunny but windy in Bristol. Skies are grey and blue. Citizens are a mixture, some in summer dress others with brollies and coats.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:48, Reply)
and raining like a motherfucker in Exeter.

a) coleslaw
b) doner kebab meat
c) onion rings
d) pakoras
e) chili and garlic sauce in pots

I have a strange desire to try a box now....even though i have no idea what a doner kebab is or a pakora.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:41, Reply)
I daresay I'll find out in a few months time.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:43, Reply)
doner meat, not so much
although, I had doner meat pizza when I was in glasgow. and after drinking a bottle of vodka every night for 3 nights, it tasted pretty good.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:06, Reply)
Onion rings, what looks like chicken pakora, and kebab meat.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:39, Reply)
I can feel arteries clanging shut all over my body just looking at this.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:38, Reply)
I'm all for a bit of meat (no sniggering!) and/or fattening snacks, but this takes it just way too far.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:43, Reply)
It looks like some sort of deluxe doner kebab deconstructed and dropped into a box, possibly because the pitta bread hasn't yet migrated north of Manchester...so do they shut the box and pop it in the deep fat frier for good measure?

during the day - go to the west end, go to the kelvingrove museum, it's brilliant, especially now it's been renovated. I used to love the transport museum but it's gone a bit crap due to lack of care. The science centre is ace (especially if you're a bit pissed), and you get good views across the river from it.
The botanics will be nice at this time of year too.
The university is nice to amble around, and ashton lane is fun - it has a wee cinema, bar brel (which used to make the best mussels and chips, not sure if it still does). Beanscene, on cresswell lane (?) - opposite ashton lane anyway - is nice to lounge around in with the papers.

I'll try a few of those places, but Glasgow is just grey and boring. And a bit scary sometimes.

Get the train to Edinburgh for the day.

edinburgh's full of english twats.
Glasgow is wonderful.
(which is why I don't live there anymore, of course)
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:44, Reply)
and having a Geordie accent excuses me from being an English Twat and accepted by the locals as being an honorary Scotsman, albeit one with his head kicked in.

call A1 comics.
Plus they have the smallest pub I've been to in my life as well. Can't remember the name of it though so it's not much use really....

it's above the ubiquitous chip, a fairly dull pretentious restaurant.

and it's best not to dress entirely in blue or green.
but seriously, it's a great city. the west end is the best bit, but I do love the city centre for shopping too.
when mrvitc came to the uk for the first time, I took him round glasgow on one of those open top bus tours - it was mid-june and fucking baltic, but still great. we went to glasgow cathedral (spectacularly gloomy place) and the people's palace, before ending up in the west end.
the hunterian museum, up at the uni, is great (I put together an icthyosaur skeleton for it as an undergrad!), and the zoology museum is cool too - although it's not open at weekends, and sometimes you have to step round students who are working there (probably not so much in the summer!) www.hunterian.gla.ac.uk/visit/zoology/zoology_visit.shtml
kelvingrove park is nice for a walk, although dangerous at night.
if you're looking for decent food/drinking, ashton lane is the best place for it - I find the city centre quite grim at night, but the west end is lovely.

apart from the green and white football side. I find a higher than normal level of chavs for a Scottish city..
Edinburgh is such a great city though - thoroughly recommended.

It's my sister's graduation. I have natural coloured hair again, though it's not MY natural colour... I'm seeing Lovely Apples tonight, and probably sorting shit out this weekend. Move in day is very soon...

with my family. Ms Foxtrot has decided that we should all take part in the linedancing class as my Mum used to do it. And I might insist we swing by the Ballroom class just to tell the instructor what they're doing wrong

For your own safety do not do what my friend did and make the classic English mistake of mimicking people's accents when you talk to them.
He went up to the bar and, when the barman came to serve him he ordered the round in a fake Glaswegian accent, then suddenly realised what he was doing. Fortunately, his accent was convincing enough that the barman thought he was actually Glaswegian. Unfortunately, this meant he now had to keep up the pretence of being Glaswegian for the duration of that pint, lest the real Glaswegians should realise he was just putting it on...
