I'm going to Glasgow for the weekend
I've been in Glasgow several times and never liked the place, but we have a wedding there on Sat, so we're going from today. Anything exciting you think I could be doing in that city? Have into account that I've already got on my list "drink beer" and "stay in the hotel watching tv if it's raining"

Are you doing anything exciting this weekend?
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:28, 72 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
One exciting thing to do
Try to avoid being stabbed.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:29, Reply)
"Try"
being the operative word. The Glaswegians are very creative when it comes to improvising weapons.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 12:34, Reply)
They have real police boxes.
You could drape yourself around one and pretend to be Amy Pond.

I like Glasgow but it's a shit place to be at night if you have kids as all the eat-out places don't seem to admit children after 8pm.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:31, Reply)
Every time I've been there
I've found it more and more depressing.

I'm glad we've got a good hotel, with breakfast and dinner included. I've never travelled like that in my life, but I think that city deserves it.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:32, Reply)
dont think there are that many left
I know of one - in the West End, by the Botanic Gardens, and thats it (used to be a tea-stall as well)
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:39, Reply)
I'm going to
Bristol and Bath. And I am going to have a lovely time, and it is NOT GOING TO RAIN.

I may be failing to convince myself of this...
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:35, Reply)
I love Bristol
and I've never been in Bath. Can we change places? I'm sure it's going to rain in Glasgow.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:37, Reply)
I love both places
and I haven't been to either for ages. I was really looking forward to it until my parents decided to crash it. I have to put up with them now instead of doing cool and interesting things on my own.

I'd still rather not swap though - I've only been to Glasgow once and it was quite unnerving...
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:40, Reply)
Oh and you should
definitely go to Bath at some point. In the autumn is nice, when there are fewer tourists.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:40, Reply)
I know, I know
I've been wanting to go to there for years, but everytime I plan it, something happens. Now that Mark's going to be living in Worthing, I think we could call Bath a good middle point for 1 weekend.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:45, Reply)
I find Bath overrated

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:13, Reply)
+s
Smelly hippy
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:14, Reply)
I'm surprisingly fastidious about that sort of thing

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:18, Reply)
Doesn't surprise me really

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:18, Reply)
oh really!

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:30, Reply)
Currently
It is sunny but windy in Bristol. Skies are grey and blue. Citizens are a mixture, some in summer dress others with brollies and coats.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:48, Reply)
Less of the sun where I am.
'tis fucking miserable here.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:28, Reply)
it's a mix of beautifully sunny
and raining like a motherfucker in Exeter.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:32, Reply)
Eating a munchy box, of course - Glaswegian nutrition at its best.

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:36, Reply)
I'm fucking starving now.

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:37, Reply)
I only recognise chips in that box....what's everything else?!

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:38, Reply)
I can see
a) coleslaw
b) doner kebab meat
c) onion rings
d) pakoras
e) chili and garlic sauce in pots
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:39, Reply)
wow.
I have a strange desire to try a box now....even though i have no idea what a doner kebab is or a pakora.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:41, Reply)
Lucky, lucky Poppet.

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:41, Reply)
ahah lucky that I don't know what they are???
I daresay I'll find out in a few months time.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:43, Reply)
You will look back
on this innocent time with great fondness.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:45, Reply)
I hope you're right. :P

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:47, Reply)
pakoras are good
doner meat, not so much

although, I had doner meat pizza when I was in glasgow. and after drinking a bottle of vodka every night for 3 nights, it tasted pretty good.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:06, Reply)
I see
Onion rings, what looks like chicken pakora, and kebab meat.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:39, Reply)
there's also a naan in there somewhere
I believe
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 12:00, Reply)
Is that for 1
or 1000?
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:38, Reply)
It's a starter. For 1.

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:38, Reply)
Oh, well
I thought it was breakfast.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:42, Reply)
This is terrifying
I can feel arteries clanging shut all over my body just looking at this.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:38, Reply)
I want two boxes
NOW
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:39, Reply)
*shudders*
I'm all for a bit of meat (no sniggering!) and/or fattening snacks, but this takes it just way too far.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:43, Reply)
Have another one:

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:41, Reply)
Get rid of the salad
And I'll 'ave one.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:48, Reply)
Cracking bit of food colouring on that tandoori chicken, eh?

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:51, Reply)
Gotta love food that fluoresces.

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:51, Reply)
oh that's what it is...

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:52, Reply)
I'm hungover to fuck
and that still looks nom nom nom nom
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:48, Reply)
Jesus
It looks like some sort of deluxe doner kebab deconstructed and dropped into a box, possibly because the pitta bread hasn't yet migrated north of Manchester...so do they shut the box and pop it in the deep fat frier for good measure?
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:20, Reply)
oh, but glasgow is lovely!
during the day - go to the west end, go to the kelvingrove museum, it's brilliant, especially now it's been renovated. I used to love the transport museum but it's gone a bit crap due to lack of care. The science centre is ace (especially if you're a bit pissed), and you get good views across the river from it.

The botanics will be nice at this time of year too.

The university is nice to amble around, and ashton lane is fun - it has a wee cinema, bar brel (which used to make the best mussels and chips, not sure if it still does). Beanscene, on cresswell lane (?) - opposite ashton lane anyway - is nice to lounge around in with the papers.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:37, Reply)
I don't know
I'll try a few of those places, but Glasgow is just grey and boring. And a bit scary sometimes.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:39, Reply)
I much prefer Edinburgh, I admit.
Get the train to Edinburgh for the day.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:42, Reply)
nooooo!
edinburgh's full of english twats.
Glasgow is wonderful.
(which is why I don't live there anymore, of course)
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:44, Reply)
I love Edinburgh
and having a Geordie accent excuses me from being an English Twat and accepted by the locals as being an honorary Scotsman, albeit one with his head kicked in.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:47, Reply)
Ashton Lane
also has an Ashoka Indian restaurant, which is very nice!
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 12:39, Reply)
that is bloody amazing
i need to go there whenever I head back home
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 13:15, Reply)
oh yes
and the gallery of modern art is fun.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:37, Reply)
Ask everyone if they're Catholic or Protestant
then say you're the opposite.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:42, Reply)
And be killed slowly and painfully
you forgot to add
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:43, Reply)
Ha it wont be slow.

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:45, Reply)
Shame it's not quite the footy season yet.
Endless fun could be had between Ibrox and Celtic Park.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:46, Reply)
The best thing about Glasgow is the motorway to Edinburgh

(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:45, Reply)
There's a decent comic shop there if that kind of thing floats your boat
call A1 comics.

Plus they have the smallest pub I've been to in my life as well. Can't remember the name of it though so it's not much use really....
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:49, Reply)
the wee pub at the chip
it's above the ubiquitous chip, a fairly dull pretentious restaurant.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:51, Reply)
I like comics, yes
where is it?
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:56, Reply)
I remeber it being only a couple of minutes walk from the main city centre shopping area.....
Here's the address if it's any help...

35 Parnie Street, Glasgow G1 5RJý
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:10, Reply)
Go to the Ketchup restaurant
It's in a little back alley off Byers road, along with a few other nice little bars, it's lovely.

Tell Markthebrewer to try and eat the Colossus, if he fails he is a massive girl.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:49, Reply)
it's in ashton lane!
best place in glasgow :D
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:51, Reply)
Also with the best named restaurant I've ever seen
The Ubiquitous Chip

don't wear a football strip of any kind
and it's best not to dress entirely in blue or green.
but seriously, it's a great city. the west end is the best bit, but I do love the city centre for shopping too.
when mrvitc came to the uk for the first time, I took him round glasgow on one of those open top bus tours - it was mid-june and fucking baltic, but still great. we went to glasgow cathedral (spectacularly gloomy place) and the people's palace, before ending up in the west end.
the hunterian museum, up at the uni, is great (I put together an icthyosaur skeleton for it as an undergrad!), and the zoology museum is cool too - although it's not open at weekends, and sometimes you have to step round students who are working there (probably not so much in the summer!) www.hunterian.gla.ac.uk/visit/zoology/zoology_visit.shtml

kelvingrove park is nice for a walk, although dangerous at night.

if you're looking for decent food/drinking, ashton lane is the best place for it - I find the city centre quite grim at night, but the west end is lovely.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:50, Reply)
oh no
the hunterian is closed this weekend. so ignore that.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 10:53, Reply)
Can't say there's anything about Glasgow that I like
apart from the green and white football side. I find a higher than normal level of chavs for a Scottish city..

Edinburgh is such a great city though - thoroughly recommended.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:11, Reply)
I've never been, but i'm waiting for my train to leeds RIGHT NOW
It's my sister's graduation. I have natural coloured hair again, though it's not MY natural colour... I'm seeing Lovely Apples tonight, and probably sorting shit out this weekend. Move in day is very soon...
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:17, Reply)
I'm going to Center motherfucking Parcs
with my family. Ms Foxtrot has decided that we should all take part in the linedancing class as my Mum used to do it. And I might insist we swing by the Ballroom class just to tell the instructor what they're doing wrong

Drinking beer in Glasgow?
For your own safety do not do what my friend did and make the classic English mistake of mimicking people's accents when you talk to them.

He went up to the bar and, when the barman came to serve him he ordered the round in a fake Glaswegian accent, then suddenly realised what he was doing. Fortunately, his accent was convincing enough that the barman thought he was actually Glaswegian. Unfortunately, this meant he now had to keep up the pretence of being Glaswegian for the duration of that pint, lest the real Glaswegians should realise he was just putting it on...
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:26, Reply)
A night at the Cathouse is.........
Interesting. And the Solid bar is lovely if you are none too fond of your eardrums.
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:49, Reply)
as for exciting stuff I'm doing...
Tomorrow I'm going to have a go at making a Chocolate tart with Passionfruit cream from scratch. Pastry and all. Should be fun!
(, Fri 16 Jul 2010, 11:51, Reply)
if you like Italian food
I recommend Sarti's - good food, nice and quiet, and reasonably priced.
