I can't believe I posted in a Monty music thread.
Anyway, I'm cooking a curry tomorrow. Or more accuratly a number of Curries to impress people.

So far I have these planned:
A whole chicken, spatchcocked and tandorified in the oven
Dry meat
A chickpea sort of thing
Bombay potatos
Homemade onion Bahjis
Beef rendang

What else should I cook? I'm expecting about 8-10 people.

If they're all homeless then I wouldn't worry too much, they'll be grateful regardless of what you cook for them.

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:17, Reply)
None of them are homeless.
Two live with their parents though.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:18, Reply)
Rice would go down well with all them curries.

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:19, Reply)
I will also be making rice.

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:22, Reply)
coconut and musroom pilaus go down well

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:25, Reply)
coconut?
what is the matter with you. this vile flavour should never be allowed near anybody's mouth.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:33, Reply)
Sag aloo and some naans.

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:19, Reply)
I might make Sag aloo instead of Bombay potatos

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:22, Reply)
Both are excellent - do both

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:26, Reply)
I always struggle to know how much food to do when its a series of dishes rather than distinct defined courses.
And would probably do both "just in case".
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:28, Reply)
I've got a whole bag of potatoes
I'll just finish them off.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:29, Reply)
Some kind of Dal
would go down well I think.

Are you baking your bahjis?
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:21, Reply)
No, he always walks like that.
Comedy gold.

No, I'll make them quite small and flat and deep fry them in a wok.

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:23, Reply)
Cool
I had a recipe for baked ones before and they turned out horrible. Frying is much better. Good luck, sounds like a tasty meal.

Where's my invite, bitch.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:58, Reply)
Cheesy peas!
Brilliant!

Muttor paneer FTW!

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:28, Reply)
poppadums and dips
to keep them busy whilst you are fine-tuning
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:27, Reply)
You need some naan breads or roti

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:27, Reply)
Fuck naan
Roti or chapatti are the way forward. Naan and rice are too filling, I want more meat and sauce than bread dammit. I've found myself using flour tortillas instead as they're cheaper and do the job just as well. I probably eat exclusively with my fingers for 50% of my meals now.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:29, Reply)
Booo.
Naans are ace.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:30, Reply)
there's a restaurant near my dad's
that does a chocolate naan. i have never dared to order this.

but the waiter did make me a special cheesy naan covered in chopped spring onions and peppers last time. it was gorgeous but i could only eat about 2 mouthfuls, i felt dreadfully ungrateful.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:31, Reply)
They should force Indian restaurants to remove the banana nann from menus because it is
impossible to read it without getting that tune from the Muppets in your head.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:35, Reply)
WTF
i have never been to an indian restaurant (and manchester is famous for the curry mile) that offers such a vile abortion of a foodstuff.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:36, Reply)
I've never ordered one, but trust me. They do exist.

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:38, Reply)
Banana naan?
That sounds fucking grim.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:46, Reply)
Do dooooo do-do-do!

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:48, Reply)
If none of you cunts get this I'm flouncing.

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:52, Reply)

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:57, Reply)
I do like chapatti,
I've made Naan bread before though, it's not too hard.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:31, Reply)
It's just too bulky for me is all.
I'd prefer to fill myself up with rich spicy concoctions than bread or rice.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:40, Reply)
i love rice
best of all the starches
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:41, Reply)
I wouldn't know
but get the drinks in
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:33, Reply)
That's the guests job.
My invite said bring ethnic beers
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:36, Reply)
The trouble with ethnic beers
is that they all taste the same.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:47, Reply)

beers types

music is better than cooking

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:36, Reply)
You know, you humble me with your cooking
I've never been bothered to learn, but I'm now craving a chicken saag, so might have to set about making it tonight giving myself food poisoning.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:36, Reply)
and me, i still need to learn how to cook a lot of stuff
i always figured it was something i would learn to do when i grew up. along with sewing, ironing, having a savings account, driving without using my mobile, drinking red wine, liking tea and/or coffee....

none of it has happened yet.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:40, Reply)
You drive while on your phone?! *seethes*
My Dad's an amazing cook, and passionate about it too, but every time he tries to tell me how to make something I just zone out. It doesn't help that he says "Then you just chuck in a bit of paprika" without telling me how much 'a bit' is...
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:43, Reply)
occasionally i might have done
usually just texting though.

the problem with cooking is that... whilst it is lovely when other people cook for you, it takes a huge amount of time and effort that could be spent in the pub or shopping or in the gym with a ready-made lasagne in the oven!
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:45, Reply)
That's worse, your eyes aren't on the road when you text!
Immediate 3 points on your license, even if you're going 5mph.
*has nearly been knocked off bikes or run over on zebra crossings because of people driving while on their phone*
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:46, Reply)
oh i don't look at the phone when i text, or hardly
i text so much that my fingers do it automatically. and only for an emergency. i should really set up my iphone to work in the car though, i admit.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:49, Reply)
But you were saying on here the other day that your fancy car
Will connect to your phone.

Just read the manual and it'll be a case of job done.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:48, Reply)
you think i know where the manual is?
actually, i've never seen it.

i bet it's still in the glovebox.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:50, Reply)
Google?

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:54, Reply)
what you are overlooking here
is my total and utter lack of interest in how it works. so long as it moves quickly and looks hot, this is as far as i need to go.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 12:01, Reply)
I've got a book at home I've dug out of a box that spent three years in the loft at my last place.
A book from 1975 about traditional chinese cooking with recipies from China and Western takeaways too. I'm so totally going to make kung pao chicken and spicy spare ribs next weekend!
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:42, Reply)
Nice!
I've got a couple of stir-fry cook books, and a Thai one too, but I've only ever tried one thing in them. I only started cooking stir fry a year ago...
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:44, Reply)
I just google recipes and follow them
the biggest problem is having a cupboard stocked with the things you need.
Indian food is pretty easy though because all the spices last forever.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:44, Reply)
Aye, just looked up a recipe, and I have some of the spices already
Living alone means cooking can be a pain, I tend to make things that can last for the next day. Or just eat pasta.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:45, Reply)
this is the chicken recipe I'm using
www.natco-online.com/acatalog/Murgh_Tandoori.html
it's only 6 steps.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:46, Reply)
Ta!
I'm going to give this a go I reckon.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:47, Reply)
I know what you mean about cooking for yourself though
I live with a vegan, so we barely cook together.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:51, Reply)
I'd like to get in the habit of cooking up a big pot of chili
And freezing portions. But I can't be arsed.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:53, Reply)
i don't like anything that has been frozen
apart from ice cream, clearly.

i just bin anything that is left-over. when i do have people over for dinner (i had a fajita and margarita night recently), they look so horrified when i start binning platesfuls that they inevitably end up going home with boxes of stuff. costs me a fortune in tupperware.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 12:03, Reply)
Buy the takeaway type containers from the supermarket
The foil ones work really well
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 12:06, Reply)
oh i had some of those once
with the cardboard lids
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 12:09, Reply)
Really useful when you want to reheat stuff in the microwave

*snigger*
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 12:10, Reply)
even i am not THAT dim

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 12:12, Reply)
Considerably cheaper than tupperware!

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 12:13, Reply)
Ha, I just applied for a job in the factory there.
I'll be in ur curriez, spicin' ur flavaz.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:52, Reply)
With bogies?

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:54, Reply)
Sure, why not.

(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 11:57, Reply)
I've got a bunch of their spices
Pretty good value they are.
(, Wed 1 Dec 2010, 12:06, Reply)
Yup, run by muppets by all accounts
but good products.
