This is a question Silly Achievements

Happy Phantom writes, "Sometimes - by planning or happy accident - you achieve something with which you are quite pleased, but which makes little or no difference to the rest of the world.

"This morning, I woke up and spontaneously farted the opening three notes from The Frog Chorus."

What did YOU do?

So has anyone come forward to take credit yet for getting Shambo banned?
I mean, come on- he and baldmonkey are probably trying to get a circlejerk going somewhere. That's got to be worth something.
(, Sun 19 Oct 2014, 15:35, 90 replies)
Yes...
...who trolled the troll?
(, Sun 19 Oct 2014, 17:47, closed)
I suspect it was something of a group effort
but I think the final blow should be credited to ringofyre. I missed the real fireworks, sadly, but the aftermath is a pleasant mood about the place. Perhaps people will begin telling stories again.

Unlikely to last, of course, but one can hope.
(, Sun 19 Oct 2014, 19:03, closed)
its what I've been hoping for, for a long time
Suddenly feels like historic b3ta around here again.

*adjusts waistcoat and reaches for another brandy*
(, Sun 19 Oct 2014, 19:27, closed)
It does, I was thinking the same.
It's pleasant.
(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 8:16, closed)
Pleasant?
Are you all so irredeemably dull, that when you get half the usual number of threads half of which are "Tosser, go away" you consider it pleasant?
Judging by the number of replies on this thread, he's 10 times more interesting than anything else posted here, and he's achieved that without even being personally in attendance.
(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 10:02, closed)
alright Shambo

(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 10:54, closed)
hahaha
Are you so irredeemably thick that you can't distinguish between talking about something, and approving of something?
(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 11:57, closed)
I make no mention of approval.
The fact stands that you're clearly more interested in him than anything else around here, even in absentia.
(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 12:56, closed)
Why am I clearly more interested in him?
My contribution here is to say that the board is more pleasant without him. I'm interested in him not being here, as it seems are many others. Does that count?
(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 13:46, closed)
You're taking personally comments addressed to "all".
*Shrug* If the glove fits.
And yes, that does count; in fact, that is exactly what I have just pointed out to you.
(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 14:16, closed)
I am frankly baffled at your reasoning.
To which you will no doubt respond with something or other that will claim to justify your position further.
(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 16:47, closed)
Baffled by the astonishingly obvious.
Has gall enough to call others irredeemably thick.

Look, you preposterous halfwit, it's pretty simple.
This thread has more than an order of magnitude more replies than all the other threads. Therefore there is at least 10 times the level of interest in it than the other threads. The subject of "Shambo not being here" is a subset of the subject "Shambo", therefore interest in the subject of this thread is interest IN Shambo.

At no stage does the concept of approval (or lack thereof) enter into this, even slightly.

"I'm interested in him not being here, as it seems are many others. Does that count?"
Yes! It does of course count, because I was pointing out all how much interest you all seem to have in him.

If you're still baffled, just remember that you're appallingly thick and shouldn't expect to understand anything, ever.
(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 17:53, closed)
You've made yourself very upset.
And look a right lemon.

If you weren't so obsessed with shambles this needn't have happened.
(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 18:14, closed)
So you were only pretending to be very thick?
There I was, thinking you're absurdly stupid, but you were playing me all along!
(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 20:31, closed)
*sigh*

(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 21:08, closed)
Well, at least it's pleasant round here.

(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 23:39, closed)
I was sighing because with each successive post you show yourself to be more and more of a tit.
I've not addressed your points yet, so I shall:

My initial point was that's it more pleasant here with less trolling. Accept for a minute that not everyone who comes here is a sociopath, and you might appreciate what I'm saying. Probably not though, I guess.

You asked why I took your comments personally? You replied directly to my post using "you're". It's not my fault if your grasp of written English is flawed.

You can't predict how "interested" I am in this subject by counting the number of replies in this thread.

You however seem to be extremely interested. Much evidenced by the bit further up where you stick your knob up shambo's latest sockpuppet. "I inadvertently had to provide a backhanded compliment". Nice. Little cheeky reach-around was it?

You did make yourself look like a lemon. Why so upset?

EDIT: I like how you've now edited your post further up so that you don't look so stupid. Are you that much of a child?
(, Tue 21 Oct 2014, 14:46, closed)
You've upset your mug of lemsip, or something.
Just so you know, "you're" is also plural, and I can keep winding you up all week.

Only just beginning to realise.
(, Tue 21 Oct 2014, 16:21, closed)
No, I'm fully aware of what you're doing.
I'd say I've successfully made you look like a pillock. Are we scoring points here?

You've already edited your posts above because you looked like an utter spastic.

I can do this all day too.

You're not very good at this at all.

Go on. Say something else. It's amusing.
(, Tue 21 Oct 2014, 16:29, closed)
Oh, I see.
You responded to someone trolling you in order to make them look like a pillock? How's that working out for you?

Which posts have I edited, and what did they say?
(, Tue 21 Oct 2014, 16:35, closed)
*cough*
Erm, no. Your (or should that be "you're", it's confusing) entire contribution to this thread makes you look a pillock.
(, Tue 21 Oct 2014, 16:42, closed)
Get your story straight; are you claiming credit or not?
There have been no misuses of your or you're in this thread so far... and it isn't even slightly confusing. You appear to have accidentally played the grammar card, AND GOT IT WRONG.

'You' IS the plural... it being the accusative form of 'ye'. Originally the correct singular forms were 'thee'(nominative) and 'thou'(accusative), but you can use the plurals for singular if you like. They're still plural.

Also, which posts have I edited (other than this one)? I don't remember editing them so I expect you're telling porkies.
(, Tue 21 Oct 2014, 16:51, closed)

wow
I wont say it wasnt richly deserved.

It's been weird the past week or so - no frenetic trolling and everyone pointedly not remarking on it

What finally tipped them into action? Do we know?

Either way - I hope this enforced break gives him a chance to actually address whatevers wrong with his life rather than just inflicting his anger on all and sundry. I might condemn his actions but I dont hate him - if anything, pity is nearer the mark.
(, Sun 19 Oct 2014, 18:40, closed)
Yeah. Pity his colleagues.
Can you imagine what it must be like to deal with him on a daily basis professionally? Sad, angry little man. He must be a joy in meetings.
(, Sun 19 Oct 2014, 18:59, closed)

I am at a possible disadvantage in that my only knowledge of him is from reading a few posts under each of his usernames before putting him on ignore 2.0 again.

I've always assumed him to be long-term unemployed or a self-employed contractor. I cant see how he could spend as much time on here as he does otherwise
(, Sun 19 Oct 2014, 19:24, closed)
Sorry - had to come back to this
There is something about this post that irritates the back of my brain like razor wire on a flail. Are you a scientologist or evangelical or something? There's something about the way you write that says "indoctrinated" to me.

"I've always assumed him to be long-term unemployed or a self-employed contractor."

There is something deeply disturbing about your assumption. We are all pretend people here. This is not real.
(, Sun 19 Oct 2014, 20:34, closed)
I'm a self-employed contractor in real life.
Is that a bad thing?
(, Sun 19 Oct 2014, 20:37, closed)
not at all. So am I
It was just that I didnt see him having 'colleagues' per se. Because I dont think he'd survive in that environment any longer than a week.

I've missed you. Can we hug?
(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 12:57, closed)
My being a self-employed contractor
means that I work alongside a lot more 'colleagues' than I did when I was employed full-time by a company. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong.
(, Sun 19 Oct 2014, 21:04, closed)

There is something about this post that irritates the back of my brain like razor wire on a flail.

- Nice turn of phrase.

Are you a scientologist or evangelical or something? There's something about the way you write that says "indoctrinated" to me.

- I may be a colossal idiot when it comes to recognising jokes but not to the extent of accepting the colossal idiocy and regimented noncery of organised religion. No to all three.

There is something deeply disturbing about your assumption. We are all pretend people here. This is not real.

- if you check the context of my post, you'll see I prefaced it by stating that I had almost no grounds for forming any opinion of him that could in any way be based on fact. And that what follows - it should have been obvious - was an internal musing that I freely admitted to have based on no data. Other than the enormous amount of time he managed to spend posting here. Which made me curious.

Is anyone real on here? probably not. Do elements of the real person seep through? of course. Nobody can spend several years regularly contributing to - or innhis case, detrimenting to - a forum without leaving a massive stamp of their own real personality/identity all over it

in my opinion.
(, Sun 19 Oct 2014, 21:17, closed)
Thank you
For your courteous and considered reply. My implications were taken from the style of your post. If you don't want to be misrepresented then be precise and objective. If you're taking the piss it doesn't matter; but expect collateral damage. The whole Shambles thing raises questions of acceptability, but come on. If you're posting on here expect to get your bollocks shot off.

Apart from transferring or threatening to transfer disputes from here
across to real life (whatever that is) I see no need to ban anyone from using this website. The site already has a user censorship mechanism for those who want to read only comments that don't offend them. If I were to make a complaint, it would be about allowing the influence of the complainers to prevent me from reading the comments that I want to read. I don't side with anyone in this. There have always been users who's stuff I don't want to read, so quite simply I don't. I have the ability to stop myself from reading. This provides me with my own infallible censorship tool. Why would I need a second layer (ignore2) and a third layer (banning users).

TBH I've I have found some of the contributions to this thread quite creepy. Should I be requesting bans and rejoicing if I get them?

Of course there's the possibility that we've all jumped to the wrong conclusion and that the bannings were purely management decisions without influence from users, in which case we can accept the decisions or leave. If this is the case I personally accept the decisions, albeit reluctantly. However I will miss some of the posts that used to make me laugh, cringe or spill coffee.
(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 11:59, closed)
for god's sake, where will the verminous trolling end?

(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 13:31, closed)
I guess...
... that as users, management decisions have at least some interest to us, as they affect the future of the site

I did consider whether or not it was sensible to post anything here, and whether by doing so I'd perpetuate the storm. I'm aware that although my reactions in the past to trolling were motivated at first purely by displeasure at the effect they had on a highly innovative and entertaining community, over time they became less and less helpful

I've been trying to wind that tendency back in again. I've reacted to what I saw as a problem. I dont want to be part of the problem.
(, Mon 20 Oct 2014, 19:40, closed)
I can see two arguments for it
1. there are certain red lines the mods don't want to cross, e.g. real names/addresses which can then be trivially googled. I mean, the top Google result for 'r*b f**rh*lme p*rth' is currently a qotw answer with the excerpt "R*b F**rh*lme of P*rth flirts online using his ex-wife's daughter as a profile picture", which I guess isn't what he wants his fellow school governors to find.

2. it's not just about the experienced users who know about 2.0 etc., it's about making the site welcoming to new users, because without new users the site will die on its arse. Yeah, ok.

Not sure I necessarily believe either of them (new users go straight to reddit these days, right?) but I can at least see the logic.
