Photoshop
New to all of this and could do with advice, what program do people suggest I get for photoshopping? (on a PC)

I'm happy using GIMP
but the interface does bug me. That's all I'm saying. For the tasks most people are likely to perform, GIMP handles as well as PSP7.

I'd go, surprisingly, with photoshop.
You can buy it for squillions of pounds, or you can buy it as a download only copy for a few hundred from somewhere I forget online, or you can download it off the back of an eLorry.

I wanted mine because I found the subject interesting
but I never thought a degree in anthropology would get me anywhere in the job market. I'll do it at some point probably, as a mature student.

I think that's probably best, that way I'll be able to actually learn and enjoy it without the pressure of having to be out with my mates every night (which I think I'd have felt if I went when I was younger).

get paint.net or the gimp first
they're both free, so you can try both to see what you like best. once you've got the hang of it, photoshop{,elements} or corel paint shop pro are the next step if you feel you need something shinier
