TJ: Anyone know a way to scan a 4"x 3" glass negative? We've been asked to supply our historical images here at London Zoo and the source for most of the older ones don't fit on my flat bed scanner. Sort of stuck!
Cheers

Cheers

but i'm despairing realising we simply don't have the physical means to scan such antiquated glass plates.

Photograph it with a decent camera, then take it to photoshop. I did this with some negatives about 6 years ago. Turned out pretty well?

hence why we've got the glass plates out of the strong room, but there's no way i'm going to get away with that en masse with a camera

then take macro images of the neg, probably get away with 6 images to approach 1:1 magnification and stitch the resulting images together into a multimegapixel image before taking it to photoshop.
You may need a tripod. The first one or two will be difficult (both to photograph and to process), but you'll then get into a routine.

all that sounds like me having to do it myself with time I literally don't have, hence why we bought a rather nifty flat bed scanner. But it simply wasn't designed to deal with anything as antiquated as 4 by 3 glass negatives :/

Back to the drawing board

It was basically a light box that sat on top of the scanner with the negative underneath, and the scanner used that for illumination rather than the usual built-in light source.

I know what you mean though, my boss is extremely unhappy about getting them out at all, but my argument has been once they're digitalised properly it's done, and i'm confident in the ability and competence of this guy.

Just listened to his version of 'Handbags and Gladrags' about half an hour ago. It's the only song of his on my playlist.
