May I suggest, as others are giving ideas, that some of those neon style 'candle flcker' bulbs would look quite wonderful inside his innards somewhere to give the effect of some form of internal combustion, and I once got a lovely organic effect by using one of those 'love meters' that resemble 2 glass bulbs with thin glass piping between and inside and that 'bubble' when held in the hand as if boiling, and simply placed it onto a low wattage clear bulb so it bubbled constantly and cast an animated light upwards and internally, this may work here too. Also, those pond ultrasonic ionisers cum submerged lights that you can get for internal and external creation of 'water smoke' simply by dropping one in water would probably provide marvelous 'steam', tho it's heavier than air, so looks and behaves like dry ice 'disco smoke', and would also mean he could also possibly function as a room humidifier/fragrancer!

Just thinking aloud...
