# I've been learning the guitar tab for it :)
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 12:58, archived)
# It's surprisingly easy isn't it.
Now, onto learning Grace! ;D
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:03, archived)
# Some bird's covered hallelujah.
I haven't heard it, and I hope I don't. Jeff's version is too beautiful for words, and I really don't want to listen to this girl's version in case it's popped up to the nines.

Plus I have no idea why it needed to be done. Is she some illiterate that can't write her own songs?
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 12:55, archived)
# Half way through they bring in a flipping choir and it all goes a bit gospel
I was nearly sick on my lap when I saw it
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 12:56, archived)
# No - it's just souled up
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 12:56, archived)
# it has no soul
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:06, archived)
# they turned it into a power ballad.

# :S
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 12:58, archived)
# To be honest with you,
it did seem a lot more like the original when I heard it the once.

(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:04, archived)
# I don't think they did a bad job with this one
considering Jeff's version is a cover too.. and he's dead anyway.

At least it wasn't the other version replete with R Kelly style grunts - that one was fucking dreadful.
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:37, archived)
# I think it was done
Specifically to upset those that get sniffy about these sorts of things.

# I suppose it doesn't matter
she'll be gone in a few months.

(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:01, archived)
# No - you're right - it doesn't matter
Not that you'd believe it the way of the geeks in my office are going on about it.
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:02, archived)
# I just wish these new kids'd at least make their first release an original.
Obviously it'll probably still be generic toss (Hello Leona) but at least it'd be a start.
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:03, archived)
# No one likes to be challenged when they relax.
It's a lot easier to digest a reworking of something familiar than concentrate on something entirely new.
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:05, archived)
# i don't get why
they have 12 shows, surely they just need one, open the phone lines and whoever gets the most votes is the winner?
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:15, archived)
# They'd not make nearly enough money
and it wouldn't be a long enough distraction from everything for the easily led proles.

Really it should be called 'never mind war and famine, here's teenagers honking'
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:20, archived)
# All fuckin' THIS

there wasn't much to talk about ;)

# Hooray for you!
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:23, archived)

(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:26, archived)
# Is Jeff Buckley one of The Wiggles?
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 12:55, archived)
# I dunno about Jeff,
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 12:57, archived)
# Ha!
I was actually having this row with my mother last night. She actually thinks that her version is really good.

All this despite the fact that she loves the Buckley version, and she saw Cohen a couple of weeks ago!
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 12:56, archived)
# To be fair I've not heard your mother's version
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 12:56, archived)
# me neither
didn't realise it WASN'T Jeff Buckley's originally
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 12:58, archived)
# O Rly?
uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rf36v0epfmI

To be honest with you, it is one of those cases where a person has made a song rather than writing it.

For reference see Jealous Guy by Roxy Music, With a litlle help from my friends by Joe Cocker and many many more....
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:00, archived)
# but Buckley would never have recorded it
had he not heard Cale's version and decided "oooh, i can release a version that's identical to that :)"

Buckley comes under the same banner as Cobain and Lennon, he died while people still liked him, so he can do no wrong in the eyes of his fans. fucking hero worship for frankly mediocre talents (yeh Buckley had the voice, but could he write for shit? we'll never know)
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:03, archived)
# Grace seems to have:
Some very good covers...

A couple of decent originals...

Some filler...

Jury's out I'd say.
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:08, archived)
# but Grace
was thrown together, VERY quickly after he recorded the track for his dad's tribute album and only 4 of the tracks are written by him (there are several co-writes, but there's no way of telling how much input he had so they don't count)

I still don't think that Buckley's Hallelujiah is anything special, nor do i think he'd have had the success he has had if he hadn't died. To be fair he'd probably still be working and recording, but he'd not have the massive "fan" base that he has today
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:14, archived)
# Well I think you are way off there.
The Cohen Version: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rf36v0epfmI

The Cale Version: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vEOZLQ3d1FI&feature=related

The Buckley Version: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AratTMGrHaQ&feature=related

I think they are extremely different from each other.

Also, Grace was a brilliant album, made up pretty much completely of songs that he had written, so yeah, you can judge whether he was a good songwriter.

Also, you may not like Lennon and Cobain yourself, but the fact is that they have sold countless millions of records over the world, so they can't be that shit.
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:10, archived)
# The two best songs are covers though...
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:12, archived)
# Hallelujah and Lilac Wine?
Maybe, but there are some other crackers on there. In my opinion of course. I absolutely love the album, but I can understand cs192's point about the dying young people and the cultish attitude towards them,
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:20, archived)
# I was thinking of Corpus Christi Carol...
But I do love a bit of Benjamin Britten...
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:24, archived)
# Ah fair enough.
That is a stonker of a cover though. He did a cracking job!

(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:29, archived)
# I think Eternal Life is the best track
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:26, archived)
# Tis a cracker!
I think we can all agree then, Grace by Jeff Buckley is an awesome album and anyone who disagrees is a loser ;D
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:37, archived)
# but...but...but
didn't Buckley only become famous AFTER he died, like Van Gogh?
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:26, archived)
# Ha ha ha!

(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:01, archived)
# Richey from the manic street preachers?
Please stab him, it'd be nice to hold his corpse up in front of all the wrist slitters and put this to rest once and for all.

personally i prefer the rufus wainright version

paranoia7curse.free.fr/Musique/Shrek%20-%2010%20-%20Hallelujah%20-%20Rufus%20Wainwright.mp3

really don't care for the original, and i agree , buckley is a bit neither here nor there.
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:23, archived)
# But... but...
Buckley's recording is owned by Sony - i.e. Cowell as well!

It's all pre-planned to make the high trousered arse bag even more minted than he already is!

It's a trap!
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 12:59, archived)
# I wouldn't put it past him actually.
The same thing happened in the US when some guy did it on American Idol.
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:01, archived)
# Oh he's well aware...
in the run up to the final he's been doing a lot of press saying that he knows loads of people hate the X Factor...

The Buckley version is revered by so many that anyone with akowledge of the music industry would be well aware of this...

It's a trap and I refuse to give the penny pinching goiter any of my finances.

I'd happily gve the cash to Leonard himself though after his manager swindled him out of around £5m.
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:04, archived)
# I read Cohen will make a £1million this week
(, Thu 18 Dec 2008, 13:31, archived)
# Good
'bout time too!

:)

# OMG NOOOEEZZZ
SOMEONE ELSE DID A COVER VERSION OF A SONG I LOVE A DIFFERENT COVER VERSION OF. THEY MUST ONLY BE IN IT FOR THE MONEY ELSES THEY WOULD HAVE LEFT MY FAVOURITE VERSION ALONE.
