Interesting, if staggeringly unfashionable, question to ask
If your population starts with high proportion of criminals and chancers, does it influence the national character?

well yes
but australia's population started with a high proportion of indigenous peoples, which our colonial forebears did their british best to eradicate. it was bound to abrade the nipples of our collective psyche eventually.

Well yes,
Being as horrible as possible to the indigenous people is practically a given for any European Empire building. But on top of that, the whole transporting the “worst“ of British Society has a “Hitchhiker’s B-Ark” ring to it.

Please define the "start" point of a population.
Not for my benefit, you understand - I'm not going to read it - but other people might be interested. I gather that historians, sociologists and all sorts of other people are dying to find out.

Surely the answer is “When people started counting it.“
But I get the impression I’m wasting my time giving this any consideration.

Youtube
is a media outlet.
The etymology of the word television has a mixed Latin and Greek origin, meaning "far sight": Greek tele, far, and Latin visio, sight.
If you watch images remotely from where they are stored, that's television. YouTube is television.
Fucking idiots, they could have sold those television sets and bought beer.

I had to take an uber a couple of days ago due to a minor emergency - the driver had a lot of very surprising and intelligent opinions about COVID and lockdown in general. Turns out every doctor, nurse and epidemiologist in the world is an idiot, but this guy understood it all. Short summary: Lockdown is bad, COVID is harmless, it's all a global conspiracy to do... something? I guess? something something something population control?
Anyway, he convinced me that COVID-19 isn't really dangerous because he got it a few weeks ago and it turned out fine. And it turns out everything they say about it was a lie because his symptoms were completely different! He didn't have a fever or a dry cough - It was kinda like just having the flu! Actually, weirdly, exactly the same.
Phew, I'm lucky he happened to pick me up otherwise I would have carried on blindly sucking on the teat of mainstream media forever.

He probably had an auntie who smoked 40 a day until she was 90.
So ciggies are therefore harmless.

My guilty pleasure: Minimal Techno (15'51")
I made this!
I have spent the last couple of hours of every night for the last week making pictures and mixing what started out as a little impromptu muckabout.
No, me neither.

I've got a good mate who did all Rammstein's pyrotechnics for years
he had a falling out with the lead singer Till and got fired, which isn't a pun. Still does work for festival circuits around the world, but he misses Rammstein

Centuries of Sound - 1924
I made this!
Every month I post a mix of original recordings from a single year. This time I've done it a little differently, as 1924 is the year of Rhapsody in Blue - the mix is sandwiched between the two halves of the piece in order to give it the scope to explore all the music going on at the time, and I wrote a longish piece to go with it.
As ever, free to stream and download. Please share with anyone who you think would be into this sort of thing, help the project survive!

Glad to hear, was a bit concerned that I'd put all the country stuff so near the start, I know it doesn't appeal as much as all the hot jazz stuff, but it just sort of fitted there.

Interesting to hear just how different the earliest version of Rhapsody In Blue is to what
It later became (on Fantasia 2000 for example)

A lot of this is down to the limitations of recording - we are right at the end of the acoustic era, these sounds were all etched by being channeled down a horn onto a membrane with a stylus.
You'll find the 1927 first electrical recording a bit more familiar - www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrafY5ILDBo
