a /debate board
many is the time on /links (as well as /talk and /board on occasion) where suddenly a single link can expand beyond all rational scale and turn into a full blown - and rather heated - debate.

This can sometimes detract from some of the fun stuff that gets put up on there, and many great links go unchecked and unanswered because people are too busy arguing.

On. The. Internet.

As some of these links are about serious, and 'interesting' things which do have relevance on /links, it might be nice to have somewhere people can go if they want to create a new thread or topic of discussion about serious issues, or to continue discussion from a link put up. OK, so maybe b3ta isn't exactly the right place for that sort of thing, but it's happening here anyway, mostly on a Friday, on /links.

No name calling, and no finger pointing here, just a request that somewhere be opened up for the large, expanding threads that open up whenever something serious is touched upon here. The 'serious' b3ta users then have somewhere to go and put the world to rights, while still being able to enjoy the rest of b3ta, and the rest of us can just enjoy the fun shit on /board, /talk and /links.

Ta.

edit: and as Madam Marlboro rightfully pointed out below, we have an 'off-topic' board - could this perhaps be pushed a bit more for the kind of thing mentioned above? It would save the creation of yet another board then.

Ta.

Can we start putting FAQ retards on the naughty step?
There are people telling off others because pictures are too wide, people telling off others for rules that don't exist and some of these people actually think they're doing the right thing (here's an example www.b3ta.com/board/8629020).

Can we please do something to establish with these people that what they're doing is destructive and the antithesis of being funny/interesting.

Why can't we directly reply to question of the week replies?
Or do I mean replies to replies? I think you know what I mean.
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 21:25, 2 replies, latest was 17 years ago)
Please may we have a reply button
at the bottom of the page.
On off topic the replies can run to about 200 and it can be a bit of a pain going right to the top of the page to reply.

That said, there are people dying in this world for the want of clean drinking water and I'm having a bitch about having to scroll up a page to post more inane drivel. I need to get my priorities in order.

May have been already suggested

but to be honest I can't be fucked looking through 25 pages of excellent ideas to find out.

Anyhows: When we submit an answer on QOTW what are the chances of having a tick box somewhere saying 'Email me when someone replies'? and a link to the post in the email sent.

It would save me (and possibly others) adding multiple links to my favourites every week and having to check them.

qotw best of
page from all the qotws ever, with the most voted for answers on it?
(, Sun 3 Aug 2008, 12:01, Reply)
when you search QOTW replies does it spazz up?
I wanted to know why they all hate Rathen, the massive stallion of manlyhood that he is so I searched b3ta.com/search/answers?q=rathen
clciking on the replies results in oops - this page doesn't exists! try going here. which frankly seems inefficient and untidy. sort it out chaps.

Can we have a Jon Peel button

Can we have some indication
when the first and second trades, that we are learning, get to a point when we can learn something new, we actually get told, so we can then go and learn it, instead of running around like a chicken with out it's head. We need more commas as well,,,,,,!!!!!

How about an "apathy" button?
actually I don't really care enough about this.
(, Tue 29 Jul 2008, 18:31, Reply)
how about an "I am not being serious here" button
which adds a little flag icon to /talk posts so that people can differentiate between sarcasm and me actually calling them a cunt

maybe like this, using the Belgian flag:

Sarcasm flag This post is flagged as sarcasm. Please do not take this post seriously.

Random qotw answer
How about putting a random qotw answer - not just from the current week - onto the front page?

Just as a blast from the past perhaps.

And how about having qotw answers occasionally on the FP? Perhaps at the side.

How come there's not a popular page for QOTW?
Always wondered this. The QOTW fills up so quickly that it's scarcely worth ploughing through page after page of gibberish to pick out the gems that invariably crop up, and it kind of devalues the point of clicking 'I like this' to anything. There's popular pages for /board, /links and the image challenge, so why not set one up for the QOTW, so people can just flip straight to the good stuff?

ban music videos from /links
much in the same way it took a note from rob to put a stop to people posting 'real photos' on the board. particularly on a sunday. the sheer number of shit music videos on /links should be stopped. so i say ban them. if everyone put up music they liked on links it would be chaos and so what gives some people more right to put up whatever shit noodley guitar based metal they like and others not to. there are plenty of music forums out there. nim nim..

A bugs or features request board.
Where we could request bugs or features for b3ta.

A "this person is racist" button
so instead of establishing the fact somewhat nebulously in big, boring threads on the main and talk boards we can just click a little button, everyone can vote, and then we can just cart ourselves over to /racists and see who is and isn't a racist on b3ta.

Convicted racists can appeal on that board and others can vote to remove them from the list.

We can also have a very simple "ignore racists" button in our profile to save ourselves the mental anguish of having to wonder how such unbelievably racist people ever got on the internet.

The racists who can not successfully appeal will also be sent occasional e-mail alerts requesting that they visit racism counciling websites and watch important films like Crash, Schindler's List, and Get On The Bus.

We've already tried berating these senseless, intolerant people with our words now it is time for bolder action. We can stop racism on the internet if we want to.

We must take this action and build our strength for this struggle and the next - against mygonistic pornography on the internet, against the corruption of minors on the internet, and so on. This is where it starts. With this website. With our will for a better world.

Thank you.

More info on the search bug
that I previously reported and it was ignored :(

The first page shows results 1-20.
the second page shows results 21-60. So far so good.

However the third page shows results 41-100, the fourth 61-140 and the fifth 81-180, etc.

So:-

Page 1: 1-20
Page 2: 21-60
Page 3: 41-100
Page 4: 61-140
Page 5: 81-180
Page 6: 101-220
Page 7: 121-260...

The start increments in 20s, and the end increments in 40s. That's the problem.

Hopefully this can be looked into with more success now, thanks! :)

I just had a bit of an ego-spaz
and when I clicked on the top result it took me to www.b3ta.com/questions/post144982/ instead of www.b3ta.com/questions/imagechallenge/post144982

Yes, I know that the problem could be solved by me not searching for my best words on an internet site.

Clicking "I like this" by accident - You should be able to "unclick"
There should be a way to reverse an "I like this" click, a couple of times I've done it by mistake, when I've tried to click reply.

Could we make the "off topic" QOTW replace the talk board?
That way, all the rubbish people on /talk will leave, while the people who are good no matter what board they're on can lift the tone of the off-topic people.

"I am upset by this" buttons
it works like "I like this" but it registers that you are upset, online, by some words on the internet

could we have a dating service?
There's enough flirtation on the boards to suggest a market for this and I think it would fill a niche - most b3tans would laugh at the profiles of most people on the dating sites out there. I've just spent three hours signing up for and perusing dating sites and want those hours back after realising I don't want to date any of those women and that none of them would probably want to date me.

'ideas' board?
Inspired by each week's newsletter request in shop-me-this, do-me-that style. Possible littering like 'draw me ye olde crude cock' can be avoided by using an 'i like this' similar to /board

Is it possible to integrate a spolier html/java code thing?
Where text is blacked out and you scroll over it to reveal what's underneath.

What with all these talks of films, it could be handy.

Can we have free gift packs with pens and some trial size cakes and dinky cans of pop
And a kite.
Only when you use the kite it isn't really a kite it's a massive voucher for a free meal at Burger King.
Or our names made out of pasta and lentils glued to fluorescent card and sent to us in the post.

Is there a way of getting people you have on ignore to not show up in the newsletter?
I want to put rob on ignore to be all punk and shit but it's like all kind of waaaaaah and I just don't know how to deal.

Posts in QOTW 'off topic' not showing up in posting-history.
I've noticed that in profiles' QOTW posting history, the posts in the 'Off-Topic' section aren't showing up in the posting-history, whereas the posts in all other QOTWs show up. Could someone please fix this?

I'd really like an RSS feed for my Gaz inbox.
That'd come in handy because I love RSS feeds.
