If your teenage self met the ‘you’ of today, would they recognise themselves, or would they think you were a sell-out wanker? I’ve never been a political type and was hugely relieved aged about 15 to realise that I could be a massive caner without having to pretend to be a mung-bean munching lesbian rights protester type. Reading about the 70s, it’s hilarious - so many times people say they had to pretend to subscribe to ‘right on’ ideals in a desperate attempt to get sex. My brother and I were deadly serious about our lifestyle choices and our later lives have suffered to an extent – we are still flying the flag when so many of our compadres are in denial about their young ways.
Perhaps you are *still* a delusional idealist, like my otherwise splendid campaign manager Al? It seems to me that a couple of decades of real life outside the student bar does for most people’s hippyish tendencies.

whether it was anti nuclear protests in the 70's, Environmental concerns in the 90's or anti capitalist movements now. Those types of people would join the cause regardless of what it is; their view point is anti-conformist and they join whatever current movement is most prevelant.

i have friends who will jump on any bandwagon, go to all the protests, cover their facebook in links to ropey blogs with poor sources, and will get genuinely upset if you mention Margaret Thatcher.

or do they stop being a self-righteous twat at some point and end up in a three bed semi in Reading with a Ford Focus and two kids etc....?
And is that good or bad? I rather applaud unwavering principles even if I don't share them myself.

the same can be said for fundamental religious believers, at least they are bending, changing and maniulating the "rules" to fit their viewpoint.*
*in truth i hate them all

"whatever the tory government does is wrong" When you try and engage them on any subject, their knowledge of the facts is often woeful.
Not all of them i'm sure, there are prbably people who do really believe and feel passionately, but i can't help thing a lot of them are there just to be there.
Case in point, Two guys working to build an office block 2 doors down from where they were building the animal research labs got beaten up by anti-vivisectionists in oxford. They had spent 3 weeks camping outside the wrong building site.

I've held on to most of my views, still listen to the same music, go to the same gigs, and festivals.
I think part of it is managing to do well in an industry that i enjoy, but also has the flexibility to go out and do the stuff i always used to. The amount of my old biker mates who will say "can't come see because it's a wednesday and i gotta go sit in front of a desk all day thursday"
The only difference huge difference is that i now have more disposable income, so i don't have to sneak beer in to gigs anymore, i can drink the disgusting much from the bar.

I didn't read my emails properly and re-sent a file off to payroll. We do it every week and it contains our pay information. Payroll take that file and send it off so everybody gets paid.
Because it's been sent twice, they are kicking up a right old fucking hooha. In order to fix it, they need to do...nothing. Literally nothing. They just need to not send the file again, the not doing of which causes them absolutely no effort or grief of any kind. They ignore it. That solves the "problem".
But, of course, I'm getting it in the neck.

If so, there's your explanation right there. Women are mental. I sent a text to a mate to remind him to call a woman of our acquaintance about a tiling job at her house, then texted her to say I'd done it. He called me and said "Silly bugger, she's already called me, no prob, all sorted"
She, however sent me a three-page text rant about how embarrassed she was and how much she'll have to apologise for me 'harassing him' when he comes round to quote.
Like I said, women are all mental.

as a cosseted middle class boy at boarding school the outside world was an enigma. I considered the poor poeple I saw on television to be thick or feckless and thus i had no sympathy for them, not much has changed in this respect.

( , Wed 8 Aug 2012, 11:10, Reply)

This is true. However, they looked like a fucking beanpole, so they're just as shit.
During my teens I was very happy go lucky, thinking the world was made of rainbows and all sorts of bollocks like that (not literally, of course). Now, I'm a cynical twat who deals with life one day at a time, and it's far easier this way, means I don't worry like I used to (when I was being a whiney little emo, as I'm sure some of you are thinking).
Then again, I reckon you're a fucking hippy cunt, go get a fucking haircut.

There was a good range of sub-plots, good characterisation etc. that blurb does make it seem pretty contrived but how he got the ability to do what he does is only mentioned off-handedly a couple of times in comparison to how often they mention it being a worrying compulsion.

so I'll download and watch entire seasons at a time. I was getting a bit bored of Dexter but the last season was excellent.
( , Wed 8 Aug 2012, 11:50, Reply)

That was mostly because of the Daily Fail and EDL types making it so extreme that I just think how bad/thick they are. This is the first Tory government I've lived in and to be honest they're just as bad as what I thought about Blair. I don't think there is any one party that reflects even half way my views, mostly because I'm very good at seeing more than one side of the story so am a big fence sitter.
My 18 year old me would think I'm a joke now with the amount of partying I did back then compared to now, but a fuckton of people using me and stuff has left me very recluse.
