Rental property is cheap.
I don't know about areas outside the city centre, but near my building (which is about 5 minutes from the station), a one bed flat in a new building is about £400 a month.

Transport links are excellent too. It's the largest legal and financial centre outside London, it needs to have good transport links.

My mate's been looking at a move to :Leeds, he's a freelance graphic designer.
His mortgage is almost paid off, and if he sold his 1.5 bedroom house in York he could byu a 2 bed semi in a nice part of Leeds.

This is true.
Round my way it's not uncommon for flats and small houses to go for well under £100,000.

Where I used to work in Bradford they could go for as little as £50,000. That said, it was right by the ring road and sandwiched in between two rough estates.

The Leeds Brewery and Ossett Brewery ones are top notch. There's also a Brewdog gaff up by the Corn Exchange.
Leeds and Ossett are opening ale pubs in York soon too.
