 alright gaylords
alright gaylordsI'm exhausted today. Terrible night's sleep, weird dreams and was woken up by spastics bellowing in my street a couple of times. How are you? Happy birthday to Battered jr.
Syria: I can't help but think if my home was flattened by rockets or my kid had her legs blown off by machine gun fire I wouldn't be all that keen. Why is killing and maiming with metal or explosives 'ok' but not poison gas? It seems to me that as soon as you have what you consider 'acceptable' methods of mass slaughter you have a problem.

 Alright Monty Boyce
Alright Monty BoyceI'm knackered today too.
On the 'Chemical vs. Explosives' debate, I would assume the level of acceptability would be based purely on comedy value. Seeing chemical burns and people choking doesn't hold much inherent 'fun', but watch a guy trying to re-attach his severed arm, like in Saving Private Ryan, and I am 'Rolling On The Floor Laughing'

As am I, I need coffee.
As am I, I need coffee.I think there's technical reasons chemical are "worse" can't properly aim them or limit their spread, leave behind residues that can last years. But morally I don't think there's a massive difference.

Top o' the morning to you Monty my dear chap.
Top o' the morning to you Monty my dear chap.I have another day off today - punctuated by shifting stuff to the tip and possibly having a beer.
The conventional vs gas debate is said (by governments) to be that gas is 'indiscriminate' and 'uncontrollable'. I believe that governments don't like the idea of gas because it's far too easy to make and deploy. Imagine the idea of a 'suicide gasser' - you can carry enough gas/precursors in a backpack to kill far more people that you ever would with explosives.
Three guys like that on the tube in rush hour = tens of thousands dead.

 Wasn't that the Aum cult?
Wasn't that the Aum cult?I think they tried Sarin IIRC - it would be easier and more destructive with VX, but VX is harder to make.
Edit. The Sarin used in the Tokyo attack was found to be impure and of quite low toxicity (compared to the real stuff). As well, the perpetrators had no intention of being martyrs so they didn't actually release the stuff effectively. Nevertheless 13 people died.

Its all a con innit. The Yanks can't bomb them when they are only using explosives because they support loads of countries that do it
Its all a con innit. The Yanks can't bomb them when they are only using explosives because they support loads of countries that do itSo they wait until they can blame it on something the public deem worse. Personally I think Al farted when the wind was blowing in the wrong direction and the poor Syrian Government are having to take the fall for it.

History is written by the winners
History is written by the winnersIt's OK for the US to kill people indiscriminately with drones, but not for others they don't like to do it in other ways.
The US's foreign policy has always been a disaster, ever since WW1, comes of being an insular country with no idea about the rest of the world. They support all sorts of horrible dictators (Tito, Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein, etc etc) cos they keep a lid on tribal warfare then knock them off when it either doesn't suit or the guy turns on them.

 Quite the opposite.
Quite the opposite.I'm all for cutting huge swathes through countries on pretexts no less flimsy than that they have 'smelly food' - I just think the idea of 'ok' ways of doing so is a bit ripe. It's more of a plea for *more* chemical attacks, I think 'all's fair in love and war' myself. I feel, for example, that the Japanese attitude during WWII was refreshingly honest: 'of course we'll work people we've taken prisoner to death in labour camps, it's a fucking war you knobs'.

 Hello Monty.
Hello Monty.Agree with you about weapons.
All wars should be restricted to hand to hand combat with knives as the most sophisticated armoury. As soon as you can't look in the eyes of your enemy you give less and less of a shit about his life. If you can kill him without seeing him at all it may as well be on xBox.
