Agooooood evening
I just had to come into work because the idiot I had left to lock up on my day off had...wait for this...dropped his alarm fob down the bog. Not lost it or left it at home but dropped it down the fucking toilet. So I had to come into work simply to lock up and felt obliged to share and say hi to everyone after having my day off interrupted.

To be fair I've watched 7 episodes of the OC today so it's been a pretty shitty day off but still. However that's now 22 episodes since Sunday evening, woohoo!

....£1bn of taxpayers' money has been lost because of idiot councils putting the money in the ICEsave bank (instead of putting it into a british bank and supporting british jobs).

So, if not finding a job/paying your mortgage or rent/savings in jeopardy (delete as applicable) wasn't worrying you already, then you can look forward to higher council tax to fund this, quite frankly, grand larceny of money!

Well, its quite technical, but the simple jist:

I'm changing my work PC into a server for testing, I copied all of my stuff to a seperate drive then formatted it, deleting everything so I can start again.

I left it sorting it all out before I went home, I just checked how it was going and found that i've copied the wrong things to the other drive, so I've lost the lot!

Serves me right for trying to be clever :)

When I want to make or delete directories
about 50% of the time I still do it from the command prompt (Windows XP). How sad is that?

The directory deletion thing was because I was cleaning temporary files and the string to delete a whole directory then recreate it seemed faster than deleting *.tmp, got into a pushing buttons without thinking mentality, which of course works better when you're in c:\temp than c:\dos, which funnily enough contains other things than temporary files!

Lithium is surprisingly effective. Trouble is, no-one really knows how it works. So, any journal you read, will be pretty inconclusive.

The best advice is take each day as it comes.

Those are the two of the only bits of information I knew before I started looking into it more. I'm not too fussed about why it works - it works and that's good enough for me.

I am, however, quite interested in potential side effects, the regular blood tests etc.

One potential problem that I'm very interested in is the possibility of lithium poisoning when at high altitude. Read about that in Kay Redfield Jamison's "An unquiet mind". My understanding is that being at a high altitude simply increases the level of lithium in the blood (not sure why). Seeing as skiing is my favourite pastime I'm keen to understand that one a little better.

Judging by the wiki page it's going to be even harder to find decent information about Sodium Valproate which is the other medication I may end up taking long term.

I'm not seeing the doctor to discuss all this for another couple of weeks but I'd like to be as informed as possible when that time comes.

While I agree with you on the drugs front
I prefer to try and keep them to a minimum. Unfortunately bipolar disorder is only ever going to be treated effectively with a pharmaceutical treatment.

As I understand it there aren't really any effective non-pharmaceutical(I'm just throwing this around now because I'm proud I can spell it!) treatments for mania.

FWIW I'm currently taking olanzapine to bring back down from being manic. A purpose it has fulfilled very, very successfully.

That could never have been achieved with a non-pharmaceutical treatment as I only infrequently believed anything was wrong and as time went by I was more and more convinced I was A-OK. If I didn't know as much as I do about bipolar disorder (Self diagnosis ftw!) I'm certain I'd be in a hospital bed right now...

I'm back everyone.

I've just remembered exactly what it's like to be at school.

Our snowman was pretty shit. We tried our best but we're obviously out of practice. It didn't help that we were lacking the usual snowman dressings - no carrot, coal, or even any stones. My attempt to give him a cock didn't even work as it fell off :(

We decided to celebrate the shitness of the snowman by having a massive snowball fight right outside the hotel. The manager guy on reception came out after 5 minutes and shouted at us after a snowball hit the door.

We both slumped inside, looking and feeling sheepish like told-off kids.

Photos were taken - I'll see if they're usable.

That is indeed one of the crappiest snowmen I've ever seen but you look like your having a good time so that's all that matters.

What exercise did you do?
(, Thu 9 Oct 2008, 21:39, Reply)
@ancrenne
Plenty of it here in Swedish Lapland. It's a fun place, and the locals are nice. The only problem I've found is that they think I'm a native for some reason and start jabbering to me in Swedish, despite having heard me speaking in English and driving a UK-registered car.
(, Thu 9 Oct 2008, 21:40, Reply)
Vocal exercise.
Belshazzar's Feast, to be exact. I think William Walton took hard drugs.

Mik was at Patty's pub,
having a Guinness or six. Finally, Patty called time, Mik drained his pint, stood up, took a step and fell flat on his face. He used the bar stool to help him back to his feet and tried again with the same results. After the third try, he gave up, crawled out of the pub and all of the way home. He managed to get inside and on the sofa and fell asleep.

The next morning his wife woke him up raising holy cain.

"Darhlin, whats wrong?" Mik asked.

"You got drunk again last night!" his wife exclaimed.

"What makes you think I got drunk?"

"Patty called. You left your wheelchair at the pub again."

What are you doing BGB, making my snowman look inadquate?

Okay, so he does a good enough job of that by himself, but still!

ancrenne - Scott, my colleague, has a theory that it's my blonde hair that's causing the confusion with the locals. He's probably right, thinking about it.
(, Thu 9 Oct 2008, 21:48, Reply)
Right, I'm off to bed.
Tomorrow evening I'm going out with the family for a curry. *glees*

Then I intend to come back home and get drunk on my own and have a lie in bed Saturday morning.

The b3ta bed
Another great concept. It would be circular with the pillows in the middle. That way, nobody is too far away from anyone else.
(, Thu 9 Oct 2008, 22:23, Reply)
Off to to my Swedish bed now
But unfortunately without any Swedish teenage girl there to keep me warm. Bah, I'll have to complain to reception in the morning.

Back at home tomorrow afternoon.

Night everyone!

Yes, Spak.
I agree with Ancrenne. Lines must be drawn.
(, Thu 9 Oct 2008, 22:45, Reply)
@ancrenne & clendrix
You two seem to be agreeing on a lot tonight and thinking of the same things word for word. Are you sure you've not merged into a single entity called clendcrenne? No wonder beckx isn't hugging me. How am I possibly supposed to compete with the awesomeness that is two b3tans in one?
(, Thu 9 Oct 2008, 22:49, Reply)
Spak
Well observed. But it just so happens to be that Ancrenne is FTW and so am I. And bloody modest, too.

Edit: surely 'Andrix' is funnier...

*duly administers hug*

Hmm...tough one, C and A are both made of win, but I wouldn't like them to be the same b3tan as that would water down the win factor.

My invisibility is caused by only having a single b3tans worth of awesomeness in me. All I need now is a b3tan to merge with. Hey beckx - you're looking a bit un-merged tonight.
(, Thu 9 Oct 2008, 22:59, Reply)
I have no great desire to merge tonight
for reasons a plenty, but thanks for the offer.

Like it many times.

And also, why are you the proudest b3tan alive?

I had a realisation today that at some point rather too soon, I'm going to have to choose between pursuing the design route, and pursuing the management route. I don't want to choose.

Crapsocks.

@POD
Are you more of s creative type or more of a person who wants to order others around? Or is it not as simple as that?
(, Thu 9 Oct 2008, 23:36, Reply)
How nice of her
I don't seem to have spoken to 'lusty in ages. And I would go look for what she said, but can't be the bothered.

And it's unlikely that I can do both; although I am still doing both design and management classes, I don't think that's going to cut it when I go to actually get a job.
If you look at most big companies, there are very few design jobs, whereas there are lots of management ones.

Meh.

All the more incentive to start up my own company in the future really.

editses - I am muchly a creative person, designing and music and the like. However, I also do well in management classes, and often seem to be the one taking the lead and organising others.

(, Thu 9 Oct 2008, 23:59, Reply)
Always good to have a project
(although I'll admit I'm not a huuuge fan of Laney amps)

I haven't had anything audio related to fiddle with for a while so my current project is removing the shitty unnecessary speakers from my laptop in order to fit a USB hub in their place - turning out to be a rather big job though.

Why do laptops have so many less USB ports than they used to?! Is it some sort of conspiracy?

We'd better think of something less geeky to talk about before ancrenne finishes her fag..!
(, Fri 10 Oct 2008, 0:01, Reply)
Conspiracy indeed
In less geeky news, I was at a friends flat tonight, and they have got a new hamster, which is incredibly cute. And she gets up to a fair old speed across the floor in her ball.
