Here's one for you...
Me and friends were chatting at the weekend, and came up with a question.

What are your favourite ever moments/matches/whatevers in sporting history?

The ones that still send shivers down your spine when you think of them. We allowed for multiples, because we all had several.

Mine are in the replies.

Mine.
For me, I chose 3.

1. 30th June 1998. England vs Argentina. A match mostly remembered for Beckham getting sent off pathetically. Not for me. I remember Michael Owen running with the ball, and scoring (to quote the commentator) "a wonderful goal". Yes, we went on to lose on penalties, but I still remember that goal - And here it is (no horses, rickrolls, or anything like that

2. - May 25th 2005. Liverpool vs AC Milan. Champions League final. Here was the match we'd been working towards all season. I told my parents I was not to be disturbed, turned my phone onto silent, and waited. It wasn't long before my head was in my hands. 1-0 down that early? Oh dear.
It got worse. Over the next 45 minutes I watched AC decimate our defense, and go into the break, a deserving 3-0 up. I got a text off my brother, simply saying 'Have faith'. It's pretty bloody hard at that point in time.
The second half begins, and something has changed. It's like we're an entirely different team to the one from the first half. We'd only made one substitute, but it seemed to make the world of difference.
9 minutes later, Stevie G jumps, and scores a cracking header. 3-1
2 minutes later, Vladimir Smicer hits the ball low and hard, into the back of the net, 3-2.
4 minutes later, Stevie G is taken down in the oppositions box, PENALTY! Millions of fans around the country are glued to the set. Xabi Alonso takes his run up...and it's saved! Wait, he's not held onto it, it's 3-3!
The rest of the game is almost a blur, I was in shock. Eventually it comes to extra time, then penalties. By this point I'd had my heart going a million beats per minute for about an hour, and it was killing me. During the penalty shootout, I had to mute it for a few seconds, just to gather myself.
Finally, Andriy Shevchenko, arguably the best striker in the world, lines up to take his penalty. Jerzy Dudek dives, but manages to save the ball with his foot. We've won it! We've just had the most extraordinary game of football I've ever seen, and now we're European champions once again! One of the best nights ever!

3. - November 22nd 2003 - Rugby World Cup Final. (Don't worry, I'll finish with a short one).
The game has gone into extra time, and in the 97th minute, Flatley scores a penalty, taking the score to 17-all. With less than 30 seconds left on the clock, Jonny Wilkinson - the poster boy of the tournament for England - scores a drop goal, winning the tournament for England. My moment is not just him scoring the goal, but the commentary.
Commentator one "He's made the drop goal, and won the tournament for England" (or something like that)
Commentator two "YYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Fucking Magic.

Number three
I remember watching that. A great moment (particularly calling up my welsh mate who had predicted england to lose and gloating).

I was in Sydney
watching the rugby final in a bar, I think there must have been about five english people there, including me and the girl I was with. It was so satisfying walking round the city that night with thousands of dejected australians.

Number 1
Was in 'The George' by Clapham South tube station, the place went mad when that happened, got great memories of hugging this girl and her grinning at me like a loon. Fabulous stuff...

The one where that football team were all gunned down

Two from me
1. Parc de Princes, Scotland v France 199?

It's been a windy day and rainy; Scotland win a penalty and Gavin Hastings indicates he's going to kick for goal. Those of us in the stands are instantly thinking "FFS, three points gone begging".

Big Gav runs and punts the ball. We watch as it reaches the apex and begins to fall ... and fall ... and fall and we're expecting it to hit the ground before it gets to the posts.

It scrapes over the post by cms. Cue much celebration.

2. Gartree School, Lincolnshire. 1983

Je suis un 13 year old wee kid who, before Gartree had been at school in Wales. I instigated a school rugby team and we had a demo game against another school.

We beat 'em.

:)

And I am at The Hawthorns for the final game of the season. We are bottom of the table, but if results go our way we can avoid relegation. We are playing Portsmouth, and if we stay up then Southampton will be relegated, so everyone in the entire stadium wants us to win.

We win 2-0. All the other results go our way. There's an anxious couple of minutes after the final whistle as we wait for the Crystal Palace game to finish, and then the whole place goes completely mental.

Highlights -
Portsmouth fans chanting "Let them score, let them score, let them score" every time we approached their penalty area.
Geoff "The Horse" Horsfield coming on and scoring within a minute.
Boinging up and down on the pitch with the players.

Unbelievable feeling.

England vs Spain 1996, European Cup 1/4 Final
Sublime football that was, and I had the privilege of watching at the Proper Wembley. And never did I see finer football.

Ooh also
Germany 1-5 England.

Watched with a dozen mates and a shitload of beer round a friend's new house.

This
Watched it in the pub; the atmosphere was electric. Nobody dared go for a piss during the game in case England scored again. Half time and full time there was a massive queue at the gents.

Also the early matches in the pub for that World cup, just for the experience of setting my alarm for 6am so I could be stood, beer in hand, by 7...

Last year's Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix
I have never bounced and shouted at a TV so much as I did that day. Lewis Hamilton won the world championship in the final corner, after it seemed he'd lost it to Massa. Just awesome.

Irish rugby this year has been outstanding
so the whole six nations followed by Leinsters climb to the Heineken Cup Final this Saturday against Leicester - where are you watching it?

Great fights in the last couple of years include:

Georges St Pierres' demolition of Matt Serra, Matt Hughes, Jon Fitch, BJ Penn in the last couple of years.

Forrest Griffins' successful light-heavyweight bid against Quinton 'rampage' Jackson.

Seeing Rampages' 5-round brawl with Dan Henderson in London for the title.

BJ Penns' destruction of Sean Sherk.

Frank Mirs' methodical deconstruction of Roderigo 'Minotauro' Nogueira to gain the interim heavyweight title.

To be fair to MMA/UFC, watching the growth of that sport since 1993 has been really exciting.

The 100th event is on this summer and it has an outstanding fight card - if you dont know it and you like fighting/full contact sports, check it out.

Fa Cup Final 1973
When the Scarecrow ran the length of the pitch to congratulate his lads.
What an unlikely and totally surprising result.
