I'm reading my first Pratchet book at the moment (Mort). It's the first book of it's kind that I've read, but I'm quite enjoying it.
It's come up with some rather cool things, like "Why does the sun come out in the day? It would be more usefull if it came out at night, when it's dark."

Mort is my utter favourite Pratchett book
and is the most deserving of a screenplay I reckon.

DEATH has just killed a king.
There are loads of little things that have my smiling to myself.

I'm going to be honest here, I have no idea what you just said.

Glaswegian pixies
Fucking really hard glaswegian pixies. You'll love them.

The mental image of a surprised cow, moving backwards, always makes me giggle.
/Edit

Think you mean Pictsies chap.

Galswegian? Cornish?
Schoolboy error. Sorry.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 14:21, Reply)
well said, that man.

(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:38, Reply)
Mort
is most excellent. Soul Music is my other favourite one, although I like the stuff with Vimes in, too.
Shame his most recent four or five have been shit - in my opinion, anyway.

Also, to those of you who saw the televised Colour of Magic, I believe it was on last Christmas. David Jason as Rincewind: your thoughts?
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:31, Reply)
You're so incredibly wrong it's beyond funny.
Nation wasn't much good, but every single discworld book has been excellent. With the exception of Jingo, which was a bit formulaic. I didn't like The Fifth Elephant at first, but upon re-reading it, I changed my mind.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:32, Reply)
I liked Going Postal
Don't think I read Jingo. I'm reading the plot outline and it's not ringing any bells :(

I've also lost all my discworld books in some freak blackhole event.

No Al, not up my vag before you say it
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:37, Reply)
It wouldn't be unfair to say that Making Money was more or less just a rehash of Going Postal,
but Going Postal was great, so that's not an entirely bad thing. There hasn't been a bad Discworld book yet.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:38, Reply)
Haven't read that
He has been churning them out recently though so I am probably massively behind

Haven't read the three after Thud!
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:41, Reply)
In his defence
he's not got long left
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:44, Reply)
Well it's not long before
he starts writing about wizards and ends up writing about the price of beans
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:47, Reply)
I think he'll get lost before he finds his typewriter

(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:54, Reply)
I still own them all
but I genuinely think that his earlier stuff was far superior; the last few have been written in a style that gets on my nerves and is really quite formulaic. But even so I'd rather pick up a crap Pratchett than half the stuff that's in the so-called book charts. I think Nightwatch was the last one I really enjoyed.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:40, Reply)
I think they got better and better up until you got to Men at Arms
I didn't think he would top that, but I think Feet of Clay was better. Then they have been consistently very good.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:45, Reply)
I would agree with that
but like I say - I think the Moist von Lipwig and Tiffany Aching novels (and Nation) weren't nearly as good as his earlier stuff. But, you know - meh, that's just my opinion. Personally, I would rather he wrote 2 or 3 more awesome books before he has to retire rather than churning out 5 or 6 progressively more crap ones.

I didn't think there was a new one out this year, but apparently there is, and it's about football. For all I'm moaning, I will be in the queue at Waterstones first thing on release day...
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:59, Reply)
I agree about the Tiffany Aching ones, and Nation
but kind of considered those to be an aside from the main stuff

I really enjoyed the ones about Moist von Lipwig though
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 14:09, Reply)
I'd say that his writing has matured so much
probably most noticable in Night Watch.

the books are almost all utterly fantastic.

I seem to prefer the latest stuff, having not gone back and reread a bunch of the others for a while. I might set myself the task of rereading every Discworld book and see how I enjoy the progression.

I've misplaced my copy of Soul Music though, and that disturbs me.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:56, Reply)
Mort is my favourite.
Closely followed by Reaper Man, Soul Music and Monstrous Regiment (which is where my username comes from).

The impressive effect was rather spoiled by a patch of ice.
OH, BUGGER.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:38, Reply)
.
That's my favourite bit in any book, ever!
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:58, Reply)
Death rocks, he really does :)
I COULD MURDER A CURRY.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 14:03, Reply)
Also...
I AM DEATH, NOT TAXES. I TURN UP ONLY ONCE
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 14:29, Reply)
But this one makes me laugh far too much
Death was standing behind a lectern, poring over a map. He looked at Mort as if he wasn't entirely there.
YOU HAVEN'T HEARD OF THE BAY OF MANTE, HAVE YOU?
'No, sir,' said Mort.
FAMOUS SHIPWRECK THERE.
'Was there?'
THERE WILL BE, said Death, IF I CAN FIND THE DAMN PLACE

EDIT: Ah well, it almost works!
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 14:33, Reply)
Ah get the rest then
They're all Awsomly awsome

And "Good Omens" is probably my favorite Pratchett book... might have to dig it out again
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:42, Reply)
Lolled at the dog.
Hellhound? LoL.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:44, Reply)
My all time favourite?
The Last Hero (the huge version with big pictures). I love the idea of Cohen The Barbarian.

Or perhaps the Fifth Horseman (Ronnie Soak? Genius!).
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:43, Reply)
Excellent stuff.
I'm not entirely sure why, but I really enjoyed "The Truth".
Some great characters, I guess.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:53, Reply)
Same book I started with!
Favourite one!

Going Postal and Making Money are both ace.

Am I the only one who loves the Chancellor as a character? I just think he's ace! Jeremy Irons played him perfectly!
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 13:59, Reply)
I hate to be a pedant, but
Jeremy Irons played the Patrician. The Archchancellor is someone else entirely, and was played by James Cosmo.

Jeremy Irons was bloody ace mind.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 14:06, Reply)
ARSE!
You are correct, and that is who I'm meant to refer to.

Although the Archchancellor was ace too!
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 14:28, Reply)
Love them all
But I would say Reaper Man is one of my favourites, closely followed by Monstrous Regiment and Thud.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 14:05, Reply)
Ive always wondered what happened to Esk
after Equal Rites. you'd think she might have been mentioned a bit now and then.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 14:05, Reply)
He's doing a book with her in soon, I believe.

(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 14:07, Reply)
exciting news
thanks
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 14:08, Reply)
I think it's in the next Tiffany Aching book I shall Wear Midnight
A cameo, I guess you could call it.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 14:15, Reply)
I always thought
Equal Rites was the shittest of the early books.
(, Tue 14 Jul 2009, 15:34, Reply)
My favourite is still The Truth
But then I'm a journo. So I likes it.
