The art of selling out.
I am considering purchasing a portable music playing device and wondering whether I should succumb to the pressure and become an Icunt or if there were a better, more heterosexual option? I have heard good things about Creative in the past?
What mp3 players do you lot use?

Alt q: How long have Alt Q's been all the rage?
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 15:54, 147 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
I've got one on my phone, it stores and plays music, all I need really
Alt Q: Since April 12th, blame Becky. They existed before then, but not as often
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 15:57, Reply)
I can play music on my phone, but the battery is shite, and I'm planning on getting an mp3 player big enough to hold lots and lots and lots of music.

I use my iPhone
But used to use an iPod. I love them, but then I love using iTunes. If you hate iTunes, don't bother with one.
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 15:59, Reply)
I do hate iTunes with a passion, but I enjoy the easy userbility (perfectly chromulent word) of the iPod.

(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:00, Reply)
You can use other media software to transfer songs
Pretty sure Media Monkey (awesome app, I use it to organise and fill in the gaps in tags in my music) can do it.
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:02, Reply)
I have an old (2005) iPod
I love it. I have it hooked up to the car stereo via a hand-knitted hardwired connection which charges it and plays into the aux input.

You do have to use iTunes with it though. Personally I can't see what all the fuss is about. It's easy enough to use, does exactly what it's supposed to, and it's not like you need to use it all that often.

Edit - OK, according to Lab, you don't have to use iTunes...
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:04, Reply)
I find itunes to be perfectly fine
I don't see what the fuss is about either.

Also, I've got an ipod shuffle which is awesome for me needs as it stops me from selecting what to listen to and means I get to hear more good stuff that I otherwise wouldn't.

have had a variety of ipods over the last few years, and with the exception of the Mini, they have all been great.
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:07, Reply)
This is something I have considered. I did a little research on iPods a month or two back to get one for my sister,
and it seemed quite difficult to get hold of an older model.
Are they widely available (except ebay) or have you had yours for a while?
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:08, Reply)
Just get an iPod classic
They have ridiculously large hard drives. The problem with older iPods is the battery starts losing charge after a year or two of heavy use.
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:11, Reply)
Possibly
but the only time I use mine without having it hooked up to the car is on long or medium haul flights. And I don't do them more than once or twice a year.
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:15, Reply)
Yep
I have an old v2 iPod (first Windows compatible, 10GB, black and white screen) that still works fine, but loses charge after an hour.
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:18, Reply)
I bought mine new
in the USA, because I was working over there for a week and they were cheaper in American shops than even my education price was here.

Apart from the occasional disk glitch, which I fix by bashing it on my head until it gets going again, it's been faultless.
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:14, Reply)
On the iPods, you don't _have_ to use iTunes, and itunes is shit on windows. For iOS devices you do though.
iTunes is great for the most part on OSX though.
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:10, Reply)
why is it shit on windows?
it does everything I want it to and does it in a way that I don't find annoying or slow
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:11, Reply)
Why are you shit at travelling to places?

(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:12, Reply)

the shutting up part will be fine for now then.

(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:16, Reply)
It's not shit
Just when it first came out it wasn't as smooth an experience on PCs as it was on Macs. It's fine on both now, I routinely have it running on my home Windows 7 machine, my home Mac mini, Macbook and work Mac mini.
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:13, Reply)
that's my point
I don't think it is shit at all. I was asking gonz why he thinks so
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:14, Reply)
I'm a laptop user, so my resources are quite a bit more limited.
But I found Win7 even on my high-spec laptop would take quite a bit of time jumping from section to section.
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:15, Reply)
Ahh
I use Win7 on my desktop machine, which is/was fairly nippy.
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:16, Reply)
In my experiance, it's a system hog, it takes a noticable amount of time between switching sections.
I'm not talking about minutes, but it taking 5-10 seconds to go from the store to the music folder, and even longer for searching, is no good at all.
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:14, Reply)
hmm
I guess I don't use quite a lot of it's functionality, which may be why I haven't seen the bits that aren't so good.
(, Tue 21 Sep 2010, 16:14, Reply)
I don't experience that
I used to, about 3 years ago, but haven't for a while.

if you search hard enough you can find most things in pretty colours
eg in my kitchen i have a pink fridge, toaster, radio, weighing scales, timer, cocktail fountain, cordless phone. not as gay as it sounds, given that the rest of the kitchen is all grey fittings and wooden floor or glass and chocolate brown suede (dining area). i also have a pink camera, a pink ipod, a pink case on my iphone... again when most of what you wear to work is grey, black or navy, with the occasional daring flash of chocolate brown, this is not as garish as it sounds!

There is one busker,
and one alone, who is an absolute joy and always gets my money.

I even know his name, Daniel Jeanrenaud aka The Camden Cat, he plays rockabilly standards and is fucking brilliant. He used to do the tube carriages (usually something that makes me come over all stabby) at Xmas and I was genuinely pleased to find him busking off-season recently.

He gets £2 minimum from me.

I had the whole carriage singgering last week when a bloke with an electric violin came on. He was making a frightful din and when no-one gave him any money I explained to him that his tones settings were all wrong and that it was actually painful to listen to.

I should have charged the cunt.

Depends what you're looking for, a few questions therfore present themselves:
Do you just want something that plays music or something more iPod Touch like?

What size is your music collection and are you looking to be carrying everything or loading stuff off and on regularly?

Have you already made any purchases from iTMS or another provider?

What kind of budget do you have for the device?

What will be your main usage (walking, driving, exercising, something else)?

What format is your music currently in (mp3, m4a, flac, ape, etc.)?
