So, planning a movie night on Halloween
Have you ever watched a horror movie that actually made you genuinely afraid? I've heard Paranormal Activity is good, though never watched it myself - any recommendations?

Alt-Q: Last film that made you cry (or last film you had 'something in your eye' while watching if you're too much of a man to admit it)
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:02, 78 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
I watched Candy Man having eaten 2 micro-dots.
That was fucking weird.
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:03, Reply)
Haha
I watched The Simpson's once while on a combination of mushrooms and E. Started coming down halfway through. Genuinely the scariest thing I've ever watched - Homer's giant head came out of the TV and tried to eat me. Never mixed my drugs again. Good times...
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:06, Reply)
hahaha!

(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:08, Reply)
It REALLY scared me.
The challenge at he end of the film was to look in the mirror and say 'candyman' 5 times. The closest anyone got was someone saying 'candyman' once.

Apparently I couldn't even see the fucking mirror, let alone speak.
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:12, Reply)
I can't even do that straight.

(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:31, Reply)
Why?

(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:36, Reply)
Have you seen Candyman?

(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:37, Reply)
Yes
But lets face it

*whispers*

Its only a film
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:47, Reply)
I watched Paranormal Activity and it did scare me.
I prefere the gory stuff.
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:09, Reply)
I hear Paranormal Activity's kind of similar to the Blair Witch Project, which severely freaked me out
Though that was probably due to the fact we went on a stoned camping trip the day after watching it, and the forest looked a little too similar to the film. The children's laughter... *shudder*
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:13, Reply)
Blair Witch made me feel travel sick.
(I'm really not great at watching films)
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:14, Reply)
watership down
is scarier than any "horror" movie.

fact.
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:12, Reply)
I have been known to get a bit misty eyed during it.

(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:13, Reply)
oh, i was going to say that as the only film
that makes me cry
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:13, Reply)
Never seen it
Is it basically just a rabbit-only-version of 'Homeward Bound,' or am I seriously missing the point?
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:15, Reply)
it's utterly utterly terrifying
google image search "general woundwurt" and you'll see what i mean
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:17, Reply)
Is it a kind of a dream....
Floating out on the tide....
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:19, Reply)
that song does make me cry
makes me think of my mum and my grandmas and everyone else i know who had the nerve to die on me!
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:21, Reply)
That song
And Puff the magic dragon* are two of the saddest songs EVER.

*I don't know if it's about drugs or not.
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:23, Reply)
Puff the magic dragon
lived by the sea...
Something something something...
the little boy stopped believing in him in the end, didn't he, and puff died?
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:24, Reply)
Something along those lines berk.
You still smoking?
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:26, Reply)
Sort of
it's gone out and I'm not sure if I can be arsed sparking it back up again. Or if I particularly need to.
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:27, Reply)
Any late night texts from hot-bloke?

(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:28, Reply)
Some
none for about an hour though. *shrugs*
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:28, Reply)
I take it you sent the last one?
Chances are, he has fallen asleep.
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:29, Reply)
Yes, I did
I was none-too-gently ripping the piss out of him though. I doubt he's gone to sleep, he's probably still out in town.
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:31, Reply)
Do you have a lot of night-spots to choose from?

(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:37, Reply)
I live in Birmingham
(well, about 3 miles outside of it) so yeah, if you go in to the city centre then there's a lot going on.
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:39, Reply)
So it's not like you can jump in the car and go and stalk him for a bit then no?
Your best bet is to roll another fat one, have a cup of tea and get wasted.
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:47, Reply)
no it is not
nor is it a likely thing for me to do. the latter is pretty much my plan...
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:50, Reply)
..and frolicked in the autumn mist
in a land called Honalee
Little Jackie Paper Loved that rascal puff
and brought him things like sealing wax
and other fancy stuff

Man, that's just off the top of my head
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:38, Reply)
Yeah, I googled it
I remembered the vague jist, and it was just as sad as when I was tiny wee :(
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:41, Reply)
Unless you think 'Hmm, it's all about drugs'
But if - and I choose to - ignore that, then it is one of the sadest songs ever.
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:47, Reply)
And they claim it's not about drugs...

(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:43, Reply)
it was written in the 60s
EVERYTHING was about drugs
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:45, Reply)
Hahaha, good point
Hence why the 60's was the best decade EVAR!!!1!

Alright, alt-alt Q (seeing as I've only thought of it just now) - if you could travel back in time to see any one gig, what would it be?
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:53, Reply)
Well, I could have seen Pink Floyd
at Live8, had Madonna not been such a stage-hogging whore...
Probably Queen or Pulp.
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:54, Reply)
Queen's a good call
Never been mcuh of a fan of Pulp though. There's just something about Jarvis Cocker...

I'd go back and see Woddstock '69. Mainly for Hendrix (who am I kidding - mainly for the drugs. Hendrix would just be a bonus)
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:57, Reply)
Also a good call
I really ought to listen to some Hendrix. One of the rock greats I know next to nothing about.
(, Sat 30 Oct 2010, 0:01, Reply)
Go on Spotify
Start with 'Axis: Bold as Love' - every song's a classic. Fucking LOVE that album.

That's horrific. Is this supposed to be a kid's film?

This was the most disturbing; www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.sirlistalot.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/watershipdown_violence.jpg&imgrefurl=http://mondobizarrocinema.blogspot.com/2009/05/absurdity-for-kids-childrens-tale-of.html&usg=__Y3qrwIDWbH7bDn4phTgFwVzkaow=&h=199&w=288&sz=17&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=Bjsz-eTdg_RT6M:&tbnh=134&tbnw=191&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dgeneral%2Bwoundwort%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN%26rlz%3D1R2SKPB_enGB380%26biw%3D1259%26bih%3D599%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=339&vpy=278&dur=412&hovh=159&hovw=230&tx=142&ty=96&ei=dUnLTKzROY-SjAfpmODeDw&oei=bUnLTLXUNM6Gswa4rKCpAQ&esq=3&page=1&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:0

(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:24, Reply)
i warned you!!!!!
some sadistic fucker bought me the photo book of the film one christmas when i was 5. sleepless sleepless nights ensued.

I think my sister might have had the sticker album.
How sick is that?

Once there was a rabbit who liked to frequent a local bar. He liked to order toast.

Some days he'd order wheat toast, some days he'd order white toast, some days he'd order rye toast. One day, the rabbit came into the bar in the form of a ghost.

He was dead.

The bartender looked at the rabbit and said, "HOW DID YOU DIE!?!" The rabbit replied, "Mixin My Toasties."
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:32, Reply)
God, that's awful
Did you hear about the incontinent tortoise?

He pissed his shell

(probably best said in a Scottish accent)
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:34, Reply)
hahaha
A lorry load of tortoises crashed into a bus load of terrapins...

It was a turtle disaster.
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:35, Reply)
i know a very very long joke about rabbits
but it'll have to wait until the bash, it's better told than read
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:40, Reply)
is it about the rabbit asking a shopkeeper for something?

Oooh.
That's gossip.
(, Sat 30 Oct 2010, 1:17, Reply)
no it's about 3 rabbits who live on a island

(, Sat 30 Oct 2010, 0:09, Reply)
Well, it could work as a horror film
I'll see if I can find it in town.

One question though; am I likely to break down in tears at the end? There'll be several females present, and I'd hate to lose my (non-existant) manly image...
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:28, Reply)
no
but you will scream and cack your pants on about 3 occasions throughout!
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:38, Reply)

I was a little creeped out by Long Time Dead but not as much as the original ring films which aren't scary but have the special kind of levels only achieved by Asian Extreme. See also The Grudge and the fucking horrible noise the girl makes
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:37, Reply)
Yeah, I'm with you on the original ring films
The Japanese film industry seems to do 'creepy horror' better than anyone. Which makes it even worse when Hollywood rapes the shit out of their ideas through those god-awful 'remakes'
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:42, Reply)
i think
I've managed to avoid all the remakes.
Oh just remembered Audition a truly bizarre film. With a horrible bit involving needles
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:48, Reply)
Wooooo badger!

Alt Q: Sex and the City
*legs it*
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:38, Reply)
Is that from the amount you wasted going to see that awful shit-heap?
(trying to save your manpoints here)
(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:41, Reply)
Why er, yes, that's it.

(, Fri 29 Oct 2010, 23:51, Reply)

*whispers* good save

The Haunting (1963)
Is my favourite creepy film...no monsters, no ghouls, no blood. Just good old fashioned sound effects and a liberal dose of imagination.

www.imdb.com/title/tt0057129/
(, Sat 30 Oct 2010, 0:01, Reply)
Blood and gore in a horror film tends to make it less scary for me
In saying that, I watched 'Critters' when I was like 7, and it scared the shit out of me. Fuck knows why - it's a total comedy horror film; www.imdb.com/title/tt0090887/

Just proves I was slightly retarded as a child
(, Sat 30 Oct 2010, 0:08, Reply)
Probably the rapey teeth what done it

(, Sat 30 Oct 2010, 0:11, Reply)
Watching that film
Gave me an irrational fear of those googly-eyed furry sticky toy things you used to get. Can't for the life of me remember what they were called though
(, Sat 30 Oct 2010, 0:14, Reply)
pepperami?

(, Sat 30 Oct 2010, 0:15, Reply)
No, although now you mention it...
Fuck, I'll never eat pepperami again
(, Sat 30 Oct 2010, 0:18, Reply)
this is good advice for life generally

(, Sat 30 Oct 2010, 1:20, Reply)
They were like wee furry balls with eyes
And had feet you could stick to things. Tell me I haven't just imagined them...

Wolf Creek.
I watched it about 6 months after having travelled through that area of northern Australia, and it was just a bit too realistically possible for comfort!
(, Sat 30 Oct 2010, 2:48, Reply)
I loved Wolf Creek.

Awesome film, genuinely scary. Don't go for the shit american remake, though, it's appalling.

That scared me a lot, but that's not really a horror film. I also nearly passed out while watching 'The Descent' at the cinema. I think it was due to claustrophobia because the monsters hadn't even shown up yet.

Alt Q: I stayed up to watch 'The Abyss' the other night. The bit in it when Ed Harris's character is desperately trying to resuscitate his wife always brings a tear to my eye.
(, Sat 30 Oct 2010, 13:25, Reply)
My mother used to go out in a Thursday night
with strict instructions to my father that the 6 year old me was not to watch Day of Triffids.

Now that was scary!
