This is a normal post Gah! Prager "University".
Also, note how, having said that to talk about ecology, you need to know some science, he then goes on to talk about moral duties without considering whether some philosophical training might help with that (around 3:10).

At 3:50, he opposes "science and logic" to "senseationalism, misinformation, and fear". But that's a false dichotomy. Science is neutral - it does nothing without an agenda - and the same applies to logic. Neither can dictate what ought to be done.

This is not meant as a blanket defence of Greenpeace: they're flat wrong on GM foods like golden rice, for example. But to say that the 2 million lives that could be saved don't matter to Greenpeace, and that their deaths aren't bad, is simply poisoning the well. All GP is saying is that this is not the way to save them. They may be wrong: but it makes more sense, and is much more dignified, to tackle them for what they do think than for what they don't.

In short, I call Troll on this.

(, Thu 30 Jul 2015, 10:35, , Reply)
This is a normal post The lack of reference is a problem;
but though the 2m figure seems high, it's not completely crazy. Like, not orders-of-magnitude crazy. Vitamin A deficiency does have a high morbidity and mortality rate (mainly among infants) - and so while it probably doesn't kill 2m directly, that it might be a contributory factor to that many deaths isn't really hyperbolic.
(, Thu 30 Jul 2015, 10:46, , Reply)
This is a normal post Not saying that
The figure is irrelevant, ANY figure is irrelevant, unless you provide source, no?

(, Thu 30 Jul 2015, 10:53, , Reply)
This is a normal post It could easily be relevant.
However, a source (or some account of how the figure was derived) would make it more credible.

It'd be fallacious to think that a source is necessary for relevance, though.
(, Thu 30 Jul 2015, 10:56, , Reply)
This is a normal post Again I'm not saying that.
I wouldn't be surprised at that figure at all, and it didn't look odd. Perhaps it's my own issue, but surely if you were to call someone out on hyperbole, you'd at least back up your own figures from the outset.

This is a normal post well if everyone cited sources during a speech they'll start to sound like a wiki artical.
However 30 seconds of digging backs up the statement....
"Golden Rice has the potential to prevent the death of 2 million of the worlds poorest children every year"

With a report from the WHO
"Improved vitamin A nutriture would be expected to prevent approximately
1-2 million deaths annually among children aged 1-4 years. "
whqlibdoc.who.int/bulletin/1992/Vol70-No2/bulletin_1992_70(2)_225-232.pdf

It seems (to me at least and speaking very generally) that the greatest problem Green politics has is that it needs to accommodate so many contradictory (if well-meaning) ideologies - and they're not all thought out before they're implemented. There's some more stuff here.

This is a normal post This has nothing to do with poaching.
It was to do with locals abusing their hunting licenses and luring an animal off a protected reserve into a hunting reserve. Though using a bow on anything bigger than a small deer is clearly not going to kill it, and constitutes cruelty.

Truth is, the reserves with various, limited, hunting licenses actually preserve more natural habitat than any of the protected nature reserves, and it's all paid for by trigger-happy wankers like him. Who combined, chip in far more cash than any charity tin-rattling. The reality of effective conservation is not all one big fluffy-bunny love-in as the middle-classes would like to believe.

This is a normal post No, this was not part of the wave of poaching that currently decimates rhino and elephant populations
and in some areas in Africa carefully regulated hunting might be the only significant source of funding to keep parks going.

But the strong reaction in this case shows that people do care about wildlife in Africa. It may be a good idea to remind them that conservation needs support year round.

And then the world will go back to exactly how it was before. With one less dickish dentist and just as many pious pricks.

This is a normal post I do hope that's a joke
Integrated Intel HD twice as powerful as an Nvidia Titan? hmmmm Somehow the fact that they cost nearly twice the price of a PS4, I very much doubt it.

This is a normal post Gossip time:
I'm good friends with a guy who's friends with his daughter, and apparently she's an ever bigger caner than he is, spends all her time time in urban collectives, free festivals and the like, just off her gourd on the sauce and the spliff. Runs in the family I guess. She's now getting doorstepped by the Daily Fail and others of that greasy ilk. Makes you think, maybe it's about time we stopped being prudish about enjoying oneself according to one's taste, and just decriminalise/demystify the whole shebang..

This is a normal post Well, what is his voting record on drug law?
Because that's the only thing that matters. If he's voted for tightening up the law, then that is grossly hypocritical, and fuck him.

But if he has voted for liberalisation then what is the problem?
