# Good Afternoon, folks! This is the front of an invite I'm designing:

Could you lovely folks tell me what you think of the rough design so far?
The Hall picture at the bottom is going to be changed thanks to Mr. Horrible!
And the text above it is just filler until the writers get their 'copy' to me. Cheers :)

# Its all cool cept the big INVITATION...
could be so much more there i feel..

but what do i know
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:42, archived)
# Hrmm, the blank space bothered me too.
But a tip-top graphic designer told me it 'added an air of luxury'.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:43, archived)
# So does using the word 'decadance' but i dont tell people..
that space should be used for important info or something
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:45, archived)
# I think it needs to be more elegant. Try fading the purple block into the 2 side blocks
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:45, archived)
# I see it as 4 different patterns/pics going down the side
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:46, archived)
# I guess the word "Invitation" still needs to be there though
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:52, archived)
# depends, if its an email invie nope, but a paper one... then yeah
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:53, archived)
# do people that interested in wallpaper know about
Electronic M?
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:57, archived)
# Do they know about the outside world?
Or the wheel...
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:59, archived)
# *Narrows eyes*.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 16:00, archived)
# uhoh!
sorry ma'am
c'mon missethel, run!
*runs*
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 16:02, archived)
# *runs*
I love wall paper in actual fact, i have loads on my pc!
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 16:10, archived)
# A whatnow?
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:59, archived)
# never mind dear..
here, I bought your favorite pipe and slippers
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 16:01, archived)
# i dunno about that.
it always amazes me that people write c v at the top of c v's when it's bloody obvious what it is.
when was the last time you wrote letter at the top of one.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:59, archived)
# Thats true
but I kinda figured in this case it was more for aesthetics.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 16:01, archived)
# I sometimes write poem or story before naming things i guess..
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 16:02, archived)
# put some other wallpaper behind that too

and make the letters more curly
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:49, archived)
# I agree
Something like this William Morris font maybe;
www.paper-source.com/images/zoom/406056a.gif
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:58, archived)
# Is it supposed to be a smooth purple gradient
or do the lines represent slightly differently shaded samples of wallpaper, all overlapping?

Actually, how about that, only with patterns?
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:56, archived)
# It's going to be smooth.
It's just banded because of optimising for you guys.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:57, archived)
# you DO love us!
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:58, archived)
# Of course I do!
*Hugs everyone who commented*.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 16:03, archived)
# Needs more swearing.
& goatse.
Hope this helps.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:43, archived)
# And squirriltits of course
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:43, archived)
# yep!
no self-respecting b3tard would go and look at wallpaper unless there was at least tub-girl . . .

(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:44, archived)
# phew
i thought the redex I was getting was going to be something nasty.

but it was just your hat.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:46, archived)
# yeah
MSN gropes is playing up

(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:47, archived)
# MSN.. *gropes*
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:49, archived)
# You making something of it like!
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:56, archived)
# I think it needs a little less redex my dear
oooh there it is

Nice but you could do with making the text a little more legible

Either fade back the Wallpaper or use a heavier weight type or darker colour

reminds me of a poster I did at Uni

also I'm not a fan of stacked type, but that's my own preference
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:43, archived)
# Noted! Thank you.
Not sure why it keeps redexing. Stupid MSN Groups, I reckon.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:45, archived)
# Yup, it's MSN.
Couple of people have mentioned it today.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:48, archived)
# ^ this
Old folk have trouble reading things on patterned or similar coloured backgrounds.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:50, archived)
# hey sexy pants
*squeezes*
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:52, archived)
# Oooh, what was that for?
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:58, archived)
# This is true, and we are inviting several doddery old Bishops and the like.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:53, archived)
# Do the partially-sighted enjoy looking at wallpaper patterns?
Maybe it's a trippy experience.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:58, archived)
# I can read it perfectly well
and it seems reasonable to suppose that anybody who wants to come to this gig will be stimulated and excited by wallpaper patterns. Fading the pattern out seems a bit sadistic.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 16:00, archived)
# Hmm, I would question whether
one actually experiences wallpaper,
but other than that, quite good.

Oh, and the 'invitation' bit is too big/garish
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:43, archived)
# Like I say, I made up a load of art-poofery text...
... just to fill the space until the copy comes in.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:46, archived)
# oops
sorry
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:47, archived)
# No worries :P
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:47, archived)
# Maybe a more elegant font for the text on the left?
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:44, archived)
# Text is a bit unreadable....
I'd make it either much much darker or much much lighter.

Otherwise, lully! Nicely done, stranger :)
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:45, archived)
# Cheers m'dear.
And yes, I've been WAY too busy for b3ta! ;)
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:49, archived)
# Am I invited?
can I print this out and turn up?
can I?
huh?

It's good. I think the bit on the left could be made more to do with wallpaper or something, but I'm all out of ideas at the mo

edit: actually, I would cut the left hand side bit off completely - but then I'm rather lazy
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:45, archived)
# Thanks for an idea, sweety!
And it's open to the public throughout May and June!
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:47, archived)
# Hmmm yes
or make the letters on the left more curly
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:52, archived)
# Fucking hell
I had a mate used to live next door to that place.

The lilac bit on the left needs to be narrower. And less lilac. Otherwise, woo!.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:47, archived)
# I like it
as noted above, I'd fade out the wallpaper behind the text a bit, and maybe make the lettering for "invitation" a bit smaller
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:47, archived)
# Cheers, Transformers-geek!
How's it going in the world of yourself?
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:50, archived)
# ah, pretty good
I've been making flyers too - www.b3ta.com/board/6940059 - and I have absolutely zero work to do, so I'm on here 9-5 at the moment
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:53, archived)
# hmmmmm, interesting.....
I'd use the left hand area with the text at 90 degrees, for starters.

And I'd probably go with a serif font for the main text area. Edit: as well as making it clearer on that 'flock' background. Might want to fade it down a touch.

Good FREE font site: www.dafont.com

Edit Edit: How about using the idea from the recent Xbox live ads with two different carpets blending together - that gives you quite a lot of potential variations on the wallpaper theme....

(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:47, archived)
# I heartily recommend that fonty website.
In fact it's about time I went to see if they've got anything new in.

/fontgeek

edit: aw, it seems to be down.
Oh, maybe not.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:52, archived)
# I don't know if it's just a file artifact,
but the gradient on the left seems a bit blocky.

Plus Doddington Hall is a bit silly. You should buy it and rename it something less silly.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:48, archived)
# ^ this
Excellent plan, sir.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:49, archived)
# The PS file is bloody huge, and I had to optimise to show you lot!
That's why it's gone all blocky. And yes, I would call it 'Wallis Manor' or 'The B3ta R3tr3at'.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:52, archived)
# *books room at the r3tr3at*

# oooh
I like the sound of the b3ta r3tr3at.

I'll marry you, buy it, and name it that.

# *tuts*

(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 16:02, archived)
# The text is a little difficult to read on that background... a little less contrast in it perhaps?
Not sure about that gradient either, especially if it's going to go bandy like that has.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:50, archived)
# OK, the complaints about font/wallpaper noted.
And the gradient will be as smooth as a babies bum on the real-deal.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:54, archived)
# Good show.
The flock wallpaper thing is very in at the moment for some reason.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:55, archived)
# It is, indeed. We have some lovely 17thC examples.
We are inviting Laurence Lewellyn Bowen and Jeff Banks :)

# Do remember to pack the AK47 with the extra magazine, in that case.

# Make 4 copies of the text layer
change copies colour to a contrasting colour
offset copy 1 left a bit, 2right, 3 up, 4 down
put original text layer on top and merge all 5 layers
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 16:09, archived)
# i know nothing of these things, but as you've asked
i'm not so keen on the graduation of the lilac bit,( if it stays bandy), also how does the word invitation look with a change of orientation and fatter.also i take it the wallpaper is one that is featured in the show.

having said that it's lully.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:56, archived)
# Awwww, thanks sweety!
- The lilac band will be smoooooooth.
- It looks silly if it's any other way than it is.
- Yes, it's one of the stars of the show!
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 16:01, archived)
# then don't change a thing.
i knew you'd have tried all that stuff anyway.
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 16:06, archived)
# have you thought about maybe
putting the castle pic at the top so the sky fades out the top of the image. you could then do the panel on the left as a gradient that did a similar thing?

(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:52, archived)
# WALLPAPER EXHIBITION?
A FUCKING WALLPAPER EXHIBITION - THATS IT IM GIVING UP DRUGS!
(, Wed 7 Mar 2007, 15:57, archived)
# hmm..... just some ideas
- the text needs to be more readable (other/bigger font, darker color, or maybe an outline)

- replace the gradient under "invitation" with another color or an alpha'ed simple background, preferably in a color not the same as the text

- rotate the "invitation" text by 90°

- try to separate the different parts with thin (white) lines

- put a thick white border around the whole thing

- or play around with alpha/gradients to blend the pictures into each other or into the text

- alternatively, remove the left part and use the "invitation" text to separate the 2 pics in the middle (with blending maybe?)
