I would like to leave a shortcut on the desktop for me to access with ease, it doesn't seem to want to sit in the bottom bar

# Do you want it on the desktop or in the dock?
Either way, find the folder in the Finder, but the main part of the Finder (not the side bar on the left which is like a shortcut). You should be able to do this by going Macintosh HD, Users, Jahled. Just drag and drop it.

If you do it this way and move the alias you've created it wont effect the actual folder. If you do it my then you've actually moved the folder itself.
