You know how to make a decent drop shadow?
Copy the layer, bring to back, color-overlay with black. Next, adjust the opacity (to about 60%), and use some Gaussian blur on it.
(Maybe some free transform to adjust the perspective)

^this^
for a floor shadow I draw an elipse, fill black, gaussian blur and opacity about 60%.
And if I'm feeling extra cheeky I do another one and make it smaller inside...oh yes I know how to live.

Pro-tip
Duplicate the layer after you have gaussian blurred it, set the transparency to multiply, reduce the opacity of both it and the original blurred shadow layer and use motion blur to horizontally blur the duplicate shadow. This falsifies the perspective effect that means the shadow appears larger at the sides than when it is foreshortened at the front and back of the object is sits beneath.
There's loads more, but seriously, it's half ten and I don't love you that much.
