This is a link post The homophobic nature of the orlando massacre is irrelevant according to sky news, for some reason.
And Owen Jones argues that homophobia is not truly islamic then throws a wobbly.

Any guesses as to why they wanted to underplay the gay hate?

This is a normal post Having spent the last 10 years as an apologist for Islamism, I imagine he feeling a bit confused
Can't account for Sky's strange angle on this though

This is a normal post Because Sky/Fox have a hard time selling gay sympathy to their conservative viewers?
It's easier if it's just Muslims vs Us

This is a normal post Then they mention the California arrest where the guy was gay himself and the police admitted their initial tweet was inacurrate that he meant to harm people in the parade.
I also read over the weekend that 99% of Afghans entering the US want Sharia law. There are lots of tall buildings to throw people off, I suppose.

sigh

This is a normal post Here's my two cents.
I don't think they were underplaying the homophobic dimension of the attack, but I do think that Jones was overstating it to the exclusion of any other factors. What I mean by that is that Jones was saying it was 100% homophobia and zero percent anything else. The fact that the guy had been on islamic extremism watch lists and claimed allegiance to ISIS when he called the police proves that homophobia was not the only factor, although it was quite obviously his primary motivation. Jones doesn't want to besmirch the religion of peace in any way as that doesn't suit his agenda. He claims the attacker wasn't at all religious, but I've read he was a regular at his mosque and the Imam has spoken of knowing him since he was a child. Jones knows better, he wasn't a muslim, just a homophobe apparently.

The point the other two I think were trying and failing to make is that while it was primarily an attack against LGBTs, on a secondary level it was an attack on western liberal democracy in general where homosexuality isn't just tolerated, but accepted and embraced. I'm sure most of the victims were gay, but straight people sometimes go to gay clubs too. Gay people sometimes have straight parents, siblings and friends. Those straight people are indirect victims of this too, so I don't think this is just about homophobia. Jones however wanted all the victimhood for the LGBT community. But apparently I wouldn't understand.

This is a normal post His co worker said the dude spoke all the time about killing
And it is hard not to relate the pledge to ISIS and reports of ISIS doing terrible things to gays - one follows the other.

His father is a right fanatic as well.

This is a normal post Yeah but I think it looks more like a lone wolf wanting to emulate ISIS in his rather sad, sick, fanboy way
rather than having any real dealings with the ISIS hierachy.

This is a normal post Most terrorist cells never allow contact beyond one or two levels. That is how they preserve themselves.
And ISIS has been calling for lone wolf attacks; combine that with the Orlando imam calling for the destruction of gays and it is a horrible stew of bad.

This is a normal post I don't think one exists.
But I'd love to see Owen Jones' Venn diagram where there is no overlap between homophobia and Islam.

Im always confused as to why the have the L in it.
Gay means both sexes right? Lesbians are women, there is no 'man only' category for being homosexual there.

So just, GBT works better. But of course, then the women feel left out as they arent special anymore...

This is a normal post I think he is a little over excited, but I never did like him.
Lee Rigby was a white, male soldier who was killed by religious extremists. Was he killed for being white? Male? A soldier? Was he gay, and that was why he was killed?
I don't think so. I see the interviewers point. A gay club is as symbolic of the 'West' as a British soldier. A gay club and a UK squaddie are equally unwelcome on the streets of Tehran, as is a rock concert with people dancing.
All legit and prime targets, surely?

This is a normal post Exactly this.
There is no point focusing on which particularly element of western freedom has irritated a particular whack job. You can't legislate against people being cunts. What you need to do is legislate to stop cunts being able to get hold of things that can kill vast numbers of people in a short space of time and at range.
