This is a normal post Seriously, though.
If you had been following the news at all, you'd realise that the spread of the virus is completely inevitable now. Wearing masks/washing your hands might help delay the spread, but unless you plan on completely isolating yourself from society for the next 12 months, it's literally going to be the toss of a coin whether you catch it or not. Whether you choose to panic about that or not is up to you. But it makes about as much sense as panicking about a gigantic asteroid on a direct and unavoidable collision course with earth. It's a bit rubbish, but really, it's a situation that realistically is entirely out of your control.

Mind you, how do you reason somebody out of something they didn't reason themselves into?
(, Thu 12 Mar 2020, 10:05, , Reply)
This is a normal post delaying the spread is important so our health systems have a better chance of being able to cope
These actions are meant to help protect the herd, civil society etc not you as an individual
(, Thu 12 Mar 2020, 10:08, , Reply)
This is a normal post I agree completely. And we should do everything we reasonably can to delay the spread.
The biggest threat this disease poses isn't individuals catching it, but many individuals catching it at once and oversaturating our hospitals.

L E T S P A N I C, seems a lot more concerned with not catching the virus at all, though. Which is just silly.

This is a normal post If your criterion for judging whether someone is an expert is to listen to them for uncritically for 15 minutes,
can I interest you in these magic beans?

They prevent you catching coronavirus. It's the natural, organic treatment that Big Pharma doesn't want you to know about. You swallow the beans whole, and they explode in your stomach. The cell walls of the beans fragment and migrate up to your lungs via your alimentary canal - this is why it's VITAL to inhale when you vomit, don't listen to doctors, they don't know shit - and they're EXACTLY shaped to catch the coronavirus when it gets into your lungs. It's 100% clinically proven to work.

They're only $99.99 a pound, and you need to eat a pound a day for the rest of your life. Sure it's an expense, but you'll thank me for it when us bean-vomiters/inhalers are the only survivors left to take over what's left of the world. If you're still alive in a year, you'll thank me. Get them before Big Pharma suppresses them!

(, Thu 12 Mar 2020, 15:19, , Reply)
This is a normal post but it's just one academic having their opinion on a radio show.
There are thousands of disagreements that happen all the time in science, often between people just as credentialed as Osterholm. And the one bit of scientific consensus about Covid 19 is that we need to study it more, as there are many factors about it that we have yet to establish. So anybody who speaks with certainty about prevention, for example, is doing so without substantial firm data about this new virus, and hence it can only speculative. There won't be any scientifically rigorous comparative studies of different methods because it's new and we're in the middle of a crisis, and that sort of epidemiological study is quite tricky to pull apart confounding factors, so you need time and well-documented large cohorts and controls
I don't know why you've decided this one individual is the gospel, enough to shout in capslock at other people, but it shows quite a bit of naivety and credulousness on your part.

Stop buying into and spreading this shit you absolute spastic.

1) If hand sanitisers work (which they do) then great.
2) If they don't (which they do) then literally the only thing that will happen to people is they'll have cleaner hands.

There's no down side to this.

the only way you can disagree with what I'm saying is if you're not informed or if you have an interpretation in your mind of what I'm saying that is different from what I intend.

in other words, you're wilfully not understanding my logical opinion, and instead twisting it into something it isn't.
(, Thu 12 Mar 2020, 11:16, , Reply)
This is a normal post what can you possibly hope to achieve by spreading distrust in our public health authorities at this point?
Why do you think they are lying to you?
(, Thu 12 Mar 2020, 11:57, , Reply)
This is a normal post the sad fact is that they are under prepared
if they were better prepared then they would have N95 face masks for all health workers. Which would make a massive difference. In Italy today health workers that have tested positive have been told to stay at work because they're needed. An absolute crisis and it will happen here too.

I don't think they are outright lying. So your question is a distortion and I can't respond to that without a skewed answer. As said above, if you wash your hands and don't touch your face nothing bad will happen to you so why not.

It's actually super difficult to answer your question in text here because it's a complex answer and easy to misinterpret. So this is not how I feel and is IS s skewed answer, but the simple one would be, because they're trying to give us agency and to maintain public calm. basically keep calm and carry on is why. It can't hurt and we don't have N95 face masks to hand out is why. would be my guess, but as I said, this answer is a simplification of how I feel, I'm not going to write an essay you see, because I'm not eloquent enough to present a clear yet complex answer and actually would have to debate the question itself, not going to do that.
(, Thu 12 Mar 2020, 12:21, , Reply)
This is a normal post even if they're just trying to give us agency and to maintain public calm
Why would you try and undermine that work? It's irresponsible isnt it?

so before you start telling people to disregard official advice on this, perhaps have another little think about it all.

This is a normal post also
I have thought about it.

it's better to know the truth.

it may make you more anxious in the short term but that's better than a long term untrue propaganda leading to bad decisions. It's better to know so you can prepare. I don't want my dad to die you see. If he catches this, he's dead. So I wan't the truth so I can do what's important, Like get him an N95 mask before they go out of stock. Not be lulled into false security.

This is a normal post what do I hope to achieve by spreading distrust
-

the better question would be what do I hope to achieve by spreading truth.

and the answer to both questions is, nothing. it just annoys me to see this idea spread about that if we can all just wash our hands nothing bad will happen, much like seeing the mouth breathers at tesco buying all the toilet paper, it's annoying and stupid.

something very bad will happen regardless of washing hands, it will have negligible impact on infection rates. it's about breathing fucking air with this one. washing hands, good idea, but it's not going to make any statistical impact.

"A new study estimates that improving the rates of handwashing by travelers passing through just 10 of the world’s leading airports could significantly reduce the spread of many infectious diseases."

quote Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP):

"I wouldn't tell you to stop using Hand Sanitiser, but don't think it's going to have a big impact on this bug".
(, Thu 12 Mar 2020, 13:28, , Reply)
This is a normal post 2 things to think about
1) MIT: many not ALL infectious diseases

2) Michael Osterholm: not a BIG impact

1- no specific mention of corona virus in the study itself, the authors however say it's relevant.

2 - not a big impact doesn't mean zero

I agree it would make sense in the main airport hubs, if the data suggests that. any tiny % difference there would make a big difference globally I suppose
(, Thu 12 Mar 2020, 13:34, , Reply)
This is a normal post before you get all excited about his credentials
the Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health is a U Min award given to staff at U Min by the dean. So it's a bit of a "employee of the month" award.
his Centre for Infectious Disease Research and Policy again is something that he created himself at U Min, not some federal organisation like the CDC that he was chosen to be a director.
I'm sure he's a fine academic, and sounds like he is a big deal in Minnesota, though he seems to be more dedicated to writing popular non-fiction these days with scary titles and promoting them on radio. But there's plenty of Epidemiologists at other faculties around the US who have published more than him whose opinions would carry equal weight, if not more. Don't get too carried away
(, Fri 13 Mar 2020, 5:49, , Reply)
This is a normal post True
There's a significant difference between claims made by an academic in a media interview or even a book and what they commit to reasonably tiered peer reviewed publishing. The podcast interview in question didn't come with links to the papers he's referring to so when he uses informal, imprecise terms such as 'big' we can't assess the data backing it up and his interpretation . The Twiv podcast I mentioned above comes with a reference list of all the papers the virologists have discussed on each episode.

I care because you put emphasis on it not being persuasive. Again if you can't be fucking bothered to listen to even 3 minutes of audio, you're not going to be persuaded.

And to be clear...

What I believe is that washing hands is a very beneficial defence against infected droplets from symptomatic carriers.

Not very effective from asymptomatic carriers. that's it. nothing more.
