Alt: what do you think of my hat? Rather spiffing don't you think?
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 21:28, 146 replies, latest was 14 years ago)

That should be good enough for anyone, shirley?

Alt: Yes, it's absolutely top hole.

what hat're you making?
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 21:37, Reply)
^this

(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 21:38, Reply)
4/4 is the most commonly used time signature.
Think house and techno, the BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM. Four beats in the bar, and repeating phrases based on fours.

Rite?
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 21:39, Reply)
If you can comfortably go "1, 2, 3, 4' to the beat
with the one being slightly emphasised, it's that. To be honest, most pop and rock songs are that. That's why it's harder to find the ones that aren't

now try finding something that isn't. The first bit of Paranoid android is an odd one - I think it's something like 5/4 alternating with something else. That's why noone can dance to it with out doing weird dancing.

My drummer friend once said something like "it's easy, just count to 11 while you're dancing"

(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 21:59, Reply)
None taken.
It winds me up when anything electronic is referred to as 'techno' or 'dance music'. It's like referring to anything made by guitar, bass and drums as heavy metal.
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:10, Reply)
you could call most or it rock, is there a parallel term?

(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:11, Reply)
You would call Tortoise and Teenage Fanclub rock?
I wouldn't.
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:13, Reply)
not a clue
but as a general term it's cover a lot of sub genres.
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:13, Reply)
having googled, yes they both appear loosely to be rock bands.

(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:15, Reply)
QOTSA are rock. Teenage Fanclub are a pop band.
And the 'techno/ dance music' thing that pisses me off is that Techno is a very distinct genre, very different to House, Breaks, DnB, hip hop, trance etc. It's like referring to Black Sabbath as a punk band.

And surely dance music means stuff that gets played in clubs to dance to, which would therefore exclude Aphex, BoC, Plaid etc. I have seen these acts referred to as 'dance music'.
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:21, Reply)
we're all a little too fond of those pigeon holes

(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:24, Reply)
To some extent we need preconseptins and categories.
it's how the human mind works, helps us tell a chair from a table, danger is in over doing it. this'll be 4/4 but i loves the vidjo:

tis a fine ballance
and I don't dis agree with you. just saying you cannot hope to totally avoid it, as it's fundamental to how the mind workd IMNSHO
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:40, Reply)
Nah. Not at all.
A guy that I used to DJ with had very strange views on music.

He had a thepry that house and techno are the same, just that techno is faster.

So I pointed out that if house and techno were indistinguishable, there would be no such thing as tech-house. He made a biscuit-arsed face and never mentioned that 'theory' ever again.
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:44, Reply)
Why do you have to over analyze everything.
Just enjoy what you enjoy and be done with it.

it's more like saying both sabbath and ramones are, lossely rock.
in the same was prodigy and (some other band) are both lossely dance, but Prodigy are not techno although the other one might be. anyway, thas my point, not going to argue it further, learned my lesson.
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:28, Reply)
Actually, breakbeat tunes tend to be 4/4. Just that the emphasis is on the snares rather than the kicks.
You can do a quick & easy remix from house to breaks by removing the third kickdrum.

DnB though, a very different matter. See?

still 4/4

the start, yes
can't get to the middle, it keeps crashing firefox.

the time signature is the bit the beat is built around.
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:07, Reply)
Yes.
Indeed. The looped beat does indeed follow a four section pattern.

Try this one www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhWyKysFJck

Have you tried Chrome instead of Firefox?
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:11, Reply)
still 4/4, could be 2/4 at a push, but I'm no expert
not had a problem until now

I'm trying to locate the lord of the rings bit that's 5/4, it just feels uncomfortable and is a bit of a bitch to play, even though the notes are easy
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:17, Reply)
how about my 2 up there?

(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:17, Reply)
both 4/4

(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:21, Reply)
i gives up then
everything i like is more or less rock based (or a rock precursor) it'll all be 4/4

there are some
that aren't - radiohead fuck about with time sigs a lot, as do a few other bands, folk tends to quite often.
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:24, Reply)
not big on folk (except folk-rock)

I was thinking more levelers or Gogol Bordello
or Flogging molly. and yes, I know one could argue those are in three totally separate genres, but thatb all have folky elements.

I used to assume that I dressed to the left, most men do.
But then I had to check and it turns out I dress to the right.
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:16, Reply)
Of course.
I find it hilarious when men do that. It's like they automatically equate cufflinks with dressing proper. It's also like when people misuse reflexive pronouns, they think it sounds good but just makes them sound thick.
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:14, Reply)

I am too tired and have had too much rioja to know what a misused reflexive pronoun is. Not that I know when I am awake and sober either.
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:16, Reply)
Sending an email which ends with something along the lines of
'If you have any problems, please speak to myself'.

Or asking someone to send a document to 'ourselves'.

It's just thickness in action.
(, Sat 8 Oct 2011, 22:18, Reply)
Ah!
I have hated this habit for years. It appears to be a growing problem too.

Now I can say to people "please do not use a misused reflexive pronoun when addressing me". Ta for that.

They are played on a disklavier, with a sequencer rather than keys responsible for controlling the movement. The inside was also miked up so that the hammers can be heard.
