So I've been watching person of interest
It's good, but now that's nearly finished.

Shitty TV show advice please. Here's a list of things I want in a TV show in no particular order.

Wise cracks
Guns
Explosions
Hot women
Decent lead actors
Something sci fi ish.

What fits that bill?

Alt: What do you look for in TV shows?

Alt: Zombies, spaceships, box sets, gritty US drama in 1-hour episodes....

None of those.

English actors playing Americans, ‘seasons’ rather than series’, tedious cliffhangers and spasticated plot twists…

I have to say that some of the American series are very good
I'm loving the Sopranos at the moment. Well acted, funny and realistic.

Tom Holland's programme on the historical basis for Islamic beliefs

(, Thu 20 Sep 2012, 16:19, Reply)
It's like trying to explain to someone why blondes are more attractive than brunettes.
Just personal taste, innit.

Personally, I love the limitless possibilities of scifi. And, as with all fiction/literature, part of the appeal is imagining yourself in the hero's role. That's why kids are taught to identify with brave knights and princesses when they read fairy stories.
(, Thu 20 Sep 2012, 16:22, Reply)
Mine has always identified with the baddies in every book he has ever read.
I suspect he will one day attempt to take over the world.
(, Thu 20 Sep 2012, 16:24, Reply)
What makes me lol
is that despite the so-called limitless possibilities of the genre what you inevitably end up with is, to quote R Lyon, 'EastEnders in space'.

This is because, despite the surface waqqqiness of having spaceships etc most stories of any kind fit into a very small variety of choices, from 'quest' yarns to 'self-discovery' ones etc. Thus I say to you that this so called limitlessness is PURELY ILLUSORY.
(, Thu 20 Sep 2012, 16:25, Reply)
Don't they say there are only five archetypes of story, or something?
Have you honestly never been a fan of any kind of fiction?

You're dead inside, Monty. DEAD.
(, Thu 20 Sep 2012, 16:26, Reply)
I have indeed, including some sci fi and fantasy stuff.
The dross/quality ratio in all forms of entertainment is depressingly skewed in favour of SHIT, and it makes me very sad.

depends on how it's used but it's a great way to tell a story which obeys its own rules and is less restricted.
In the second or third series of BSG some of the humans were under occupation and to fight back they started using torture, targeted assainations and suicide bombers.
In 2006 in a prime time TV series suicide bombers were heroes, but they could that aired, because it was in this fictional universe.
(, Thu 20 Sep 2012, 16:20, Reply)
Also there's an awful lot of drama that is based on constant threat and isolation.
Das boot springs to mind but also Zulu and a few others. Sci Fi programs seem to have that as a common theme, especially ones which involve space travel.

GIve Falling Skies a try, Batts.
It's mostly about people trying to survive after the end of the world. The fact that it's got aliens in it is almost incidental until the middle of the series.
(, Thu 20 Sep 2012, 16:41, Reply)
Jericho was fairly similar
except that the antagonists were terrorists rather than aliens.
Not that it was properly explored, as they cancelled it after one series. Then brought it back and cancelled it again.
Tch, eh?

Well,
i've been fucking greasy, and horrible all day, trying to find the source of the oil leak on my car, was it in the bell housing? no! Was it the coming out the back of the main bearing? No, was it the sump bolts coming lose? no. Blocked crank case breather? no. None of the obvious normal shit, I had the engine out, had the crank shaft out, the whole fucking engine almost in pieces on the drive. And do yo know where the fucking leak was? do you? Whichever cunt fitted the after-market oil pressure gauge, didn't put the right sized nut on the fitting, so it was just pissing out of this little bolt at high pressure. That was it. a five minute job. What a fucking cunt.

Lost Girl fits these I think
Also, Common Law, it's pretty great

alt: Mostly is it sexy. Lately I've discovered a shit ton of redneck tv shows which excite me, Duck Dynasty is hilarious, as well as Gator Boys and Call of the Wildman, I watched American Hoggers last night, it was interesting, a little too much blood for me.

K, I checked out iTunes.
You can totally burn them onto CD. However. M4A files are relatively new and not all CD players capable of playing mp3s will recognise the format. There are plenty of free converters online, but it's likely that you'll have to convert one at a time unless you pay.

The good news is the M4A is rapidly getting popular enough that you'll see widespread adoption.

If you want a hand gaz me and I'll dig out a decent converter etc.

I actually like Cajun Pawn Stars better than Vegas

I forget sometimes just how vast America really is.
The different shows from the different areas really show up what a varied nation you have.

Our channels are just starting the Cajun / Texan versions of the pawn stars / Storage Wars shows.

i think we need to institute some sort of thread rating system,
edited in to the main post once the thread is over, so if you've been busy, you can easily see which threads are worth browsing. Reply count/time scale is sometimes a good measure, but that might be because there is some sort of dull squabble going on.
