f00o0o0o00od thread
Every year, at Casa'd Mama Gonz, at christmas, it's my absolute pleasure to do the starter for the christmas meal. There are some rules, I'm not allowed to make a mess or use up much of the kitchen on the day, but the day before I can do what I'd like from home and bring it in.

Previous years I've done scallops on a pea puree, and the year before that I did a prawn cocktail. This year though, I'm a bit stumped.

I've also got a georgous 300g ribeye, some posh mushrooms, and some posh blue cheese. I'm not sure to do a bluecheese sauce and have it in an epic sandwich....or a mushroom one one with a nice baked potato. Whats your perfect steak super?

Ma' is doing a pick-up from my dealer later on today, so I asked her to pick up a couple of prepaired squid and 5 of those big fat king-prawns that I love so much. Got any ideas for that? I like Jamie's idea of doing the squid into balls and then making them crispy with sweet chili sauce and seasimiseeds.

Natually we can chuck in a lunch thread in here if it hasn't already been done.

If food ain't your cup of tea at the moment, what bit of media are you consuming and enjoying recently? I'm thoroughly enjoying the book K-PAX (I'm on the second book now, the first one only took me about 10 days to read, and I'm a real slow reader); I've read it loads of times now. I'm really enjoying Elementary too.

One more alt: I'm learning the Violin right now, I'm up to the forth practice thing using the open strings, thoroughly enjoying it.

Fry the steak for however long you want, a minute before it's done, add the chopped onions and a large knob of butter
While the steak is resting, continue to cook the mushrooms down, add a little lea & perrins, and plenty of black pepper. Pour over cooked steak. Eat.

Steamed cabbage
Pan fried sprouts with nutmeg and pancetta

Smoked salmon is what you have for breakfast you oaf.
You wake up, you have some bucks fizz, then you open a few presents.

Then you have toast, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon and lots of coffee.

Then you go and see some friends

Then you come home and watch some telly and prepare the veg while drinking port or sherry

Then you have dinner.

I found cabbage utterly unappealing until I discovered how much nicer it was steamed, and with some sea salt on it.

(, Fri 7 Dec 2012, 14:53, Reply)
I stole a pasta dish from a Jamie Oliver programme ages ago
Fry pancetta and garlic off with butter and olive oil, then add pine nuts and cook until browning niceely. Chuck in a load of shredded savoy cabbage and leave the lid on for 10 mins. Meantime, cook the pasta and drain, saving some water.

Take the lid off the cabbage, throw in some parmesan and mozzarella, along with some of the pasta water and mix it all about. The cheese and starch make a sauce that will coat everything.

Serve with chicken breast.
(, Fri 7 Dec 2012, 14:55, Reply)
I'm currently mainly living off chicken and steamed vegetables in the evening
Cheap, fairly tasty, not very filling though.

This sounds like it could be a good idea though, just not the pine nuts.
