And now feel in a filthy mood.
So it is with great cynicism and general bad temperedness that I ask....
What sort of mood are you in today.
Bugger me that's a dull question.
What puts you in a bad mood?
That's better, then you can all feel as pissed off as me.

It's amazing how much exercise changes your mood. I haven't cycled in about three months because I've got a reoccurring hip problem which the dr says will just heal itself. Add to the kidney infection I had a few weeks back and therefore no energy to climb and it all makes me really, really pissed off and at least half a stone heavier than normal.

Why is it that things always happen in threes?
The day didn't start well, as I spent most of it in Nuneaton. If Stratford upon Avon is the jewel in the crown of Warwickshire, then Nuneaton is the dangly bit of fluff hanging from the arse of Warwickshire.
Then, on the way back home, I managed to pick up a puncture in one of the rear tyres of my car - a puncture right next to the sidewall that couldn't be repaired. While I was looking at it, I noticed that the tyre on the other side was pretty damn close to the legal wear limit too. So, 2 new tyres later I was just over £500 lighter.
Then if that wasn't enough, I made myself a cheese toastie when I got in. Being an impatient sod, I started eating it right away only for a jet of superheated cheddar to squeeze out and onto my lip. I swear this stuff is an effective napalm substitute, as it immediately started burning and set solid almost on contact, taking half of the skin off my lower lip.
So here I am, £500 lighter and a scabby lip thanks to yesterday.
*grumps*
Hope today is better

What puts me in a bad mood?
I'd have to say what puts me in a bad mood is when I think about the state of this country.
Now before I go off on a diatribe, I ought to clarify that I'm of an ethnic persuasion, so it should put my following comments into context.
I can't stand the way this country is going. There used to be a sense of community and a spirit of "let's work together". Now we have immigrants and homegrown scum claiming benefits and not working and contributing to society. We have gangs hanging around on street corners making people feel unsafe on their own streets.
There was also a time when people took a pride in what they did. "Made in the UK" was almost like a seal of quality, now, it's met witn derision. We had a thriving industry of manufacturing. But due to "saving money" they have been closed down and moved to lower cost countries (so the next time you buy something "Made in China/Poland/Latvia (delete as applicable)" because it's £5 cheaper, remember what the REAL cost is!). Now people buy foreign made goods and people lose jobs here.
Then, we have the opposite end of the scale, where, let's say, everyone in the UK was a productive member of society. They paid their taxes, bought British, and helped everyone form communties to work together. The government would screw the people over in a heartbeat. Spending taxpayers' money on expensive cars for them for "state visits" (cars which aren't even made in the UK!). Politicians being caught fiddling their expenses. Buying second homes with more tax money, because "it's closer to where I work" (whereas most people have to move house to be closer to work, rather than buy a second home). Then, the government will spend more money bailing out banks (approximate cost £300bn and rising) because the banks made bad investments. Any other industry (i.e MG Rover) would receive no money from the government and be told "that's laws of economics". But when a bank fails? "Have loads of money! You're so valuable to our economy!"
It pains me to see the UK turning into this. It used to be such a great country.
There are still decent people and decent communities around, but the scum are gradually out-numbering us.

I'd say the genuine scum are a tiny minority of the people of this country. They're just more visible. To use a business analogy - you're much more likely to get a complaint than a compliment - ie. you're more likely to hear about benefit-sucking scum or notice chavs hanging around outside Subway than you are to hear about the normal, everyday people.
I think yours is quite a narrow view... we are nowhere near being outnumbered by scum.

Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to be wrong on this one! I really do! But come and live in the South east and make that statement again. When you have places like Luton, Hull (not South east, I know!), Margate, Ramsgate, etc. It worries me. Even the town I live in is overrun with scum!
Even, that aside. the economic arguments rile me just as bad. Claiming benefits and not working (through laziness), nobody supporting local business, etc.

I've been lucky enough to live in a rural market town nearly my whole life, so I can't really comment on places I've not spent more than a day or so in.
But I'll reiterate that I firmly believe the vast majority of people in ANY town in the UK are hard-working, thoughtful, family-oriented and generally a nice bunch. The scum are, by far, the minority.
Edit: lusty, I'd like to think I'm not scum :) although I did spend a year signing-on once.

Stig,
I wouldn't say that there's any more scum now than there were in the past - they're perhaps just a bit more visible through the media that's all.
I spent the whole of my life up to the age of 18 living in one of the least salubrious parts of the UK (Stoke on Trent). Don't get me wrong, there WERE scum there, but they were just the loud, vocal minority. There were also a great number of people there that some people would consider to be scum, but the reality was that they'd committed no greater crime than having a lack of ambition and being full of pig-ignorance. Once you looked past that, they were fairly decent people.
Until fairly recently I lived in a suburb of Birmingham that neighboured one of the most notorious Birmingham hot-spots. Once again, I couldn't really see any reason for this other than a lack of ambition, and a touch of xenophobia by some people due to its extremely high ethnic minority population.
It's just one of those things that I feel is perhaps blown out of all proportion by the media. It's not a problem that's any worse now than at any point earlier in my life in my opinion.
( , Wed 15 Oct 2008, 8:39, Reply)
![This is a QotW comment](/images/board_posticon.gif)
but they are in the minority. Even in grotty cities. As was pointed out above, it's not the ordinary people whom you notice, it's the troublemakers.

I'd like to draw a line on this because it's a more volatile topic, than I gave it credit for.
I used to believe that it was blown out of proportion by the media. But the more I walk my town and other towns, the more I don't like what I see.
Maybe it's just the areas I go to, but I strongly believe there's more scum than there used to be.

What pisses me off - currently, companies who don't give graduates a chance and try us out. I know unemployment is on the rise etc etc but if people don't give others a chance, how do they get the experience!
That's just my personal opinion and it is heavily biased by my own situation.
Other things that piss me off are pandas and bananas.

Just because I've not lived all over the UK doesn't mean I haven't visited them, and had a generally lovely time everywhere I've been. In fact I've never had a bad experience anywhere I've been in this country.
I distinctly dislike the opinion that 'this country's going to the dogs', mutters of immigration and yob culture ruining society. Cos from what I see, it's sensationalist, ill-informed and just plain wrong.
So yeah, I'll happily let the ratio thing rest. I just feel that your view is skewed by your experience and you're not giving everyone a fair chance by being so narrow-minded.
This is my last post on the subject as I don't want to argue.

As for the world around me, I'll let others rant for me. Suffice it is to say that we live in a world of cretins. Cretins in government, cretins in banks, cretins on the streets and cretins in the media.
Otherwise, today is "hump" Wednesday - meaning it's the hump in the middle of the week and it's all downhill to the weekend when hopefully I'll be reunited with a very comely lady of my acquaintance and will be trying out Lucy Van Pelt's recipe for sweet potato curry.

Right:
I'm with No31. It's very simple to insist that Britain is 'Broken', or that it's going to the dogs, or to cry that it's populated by cider drinking hoodies who smack each other up with heroin while they stab each other in the guts.
However, I live in the Capital city. Even better, I live in the East End, where you'd expect trouble to be rife.
I find (and I have lived in the North, in the Countryside, and in other countries), that people will always be people. For the most part, they are accomodating, friendly and proud people. And, as with many things, it is the tiny minority of people (and the analogy can be applied elsewhere) who give the majority a bad name.
So that's what puts me in a bad mood. If people (the media, the people that swallow the headlines) keep crying out about how awful Britain is, then it might just turn that way. Perhaps if we all tried being a bit more positive, then we could attempt to have a positive impact on the bad stuff that does happen in our society. If we constantly paint all young people as being blood-crazy hooligans, it's not going to get us anywhere (I use this as just one example).
Britain is great. You British should be proud of it!
/ends rant.
We all well today?

I'm sticking to less inflammatory subjects.....like Religion! And why people are called things like "Snufflybottomkins"......
Screennames are good because we can pick the name we want. Something which will reflect our personality or what we like.
When we're children, our parents decide that. We have no say in the matter! So on balance, screennames are better.....!

the dickhead game is very childish but very funny.
you have a plastic willy on a headstrap. you wear the willy on your head and the other person throws the little plastic rings and tries to get them to land on your willy. then you do the same.
it's a rude version of quoits.
and the chocolate twister is the tabletop dinnerparty version but you use hands/elbows/noses/ears etc.

You'll probably find all of the old hotels in the centre are either fully booked or ridiculously expensive. In fact, probably both. Edinburgh is a top touristy kind of place, so the prices are silly. Especially over Easter.

you should never trust statistics, polls, etc.
Opinion polls are the worst. For a start, you are only looking of that sector of the population which wishes to answer the pollster. Which does not include me, for example.
Also, of those who do answer, how do you know they aren;t just making up their answers? You don't.
Same goes for random statistics:
"There was a fall of 17% in knife crime in Perth last month", could mean there were 5 stabbings rather than 6. It's hardly significant.
It's all bollocks.

is a chemically inert, but radioactive gas released as a radioactive decay product of radium, itself a product of thorium decay, which is in turn a product of the radioactive decay of uranium. Uranium and its decay products are found in small, but significant, quantities in granite.
Radon has a short half life of about 4 days, and decays by releasing alpha particles. It's dangerous because it's a gas, and it therefore can release its alpha particles right into the lungs. Alpha radiation is normally not that dangerous because of its very short range. But in the lungs, it can cause all manner of problems - primarily lung cancer.
For this reason, basements of granite houses should be well ventilated to avoid the build up of radon gas.
Here endeth today's science lesson.

I didn't know that, as I'm not in the business of house building.
*files away fact in brain*
@HCFB - yes, it is possible. Technically it's not poisoning per se, as there's no chemical reaction occurring. It's physical cell damage caused by high energy particles emitted from the radioactive nuclei.
The risk is very low, of course, but it is finite, especially if the house is poorly ventilated allowing the radon to build up rather than escape into the atmosphere. Other parts of the country aside from Aberdeen have this problem too - I think Cornwall is one.

Said nerd was boasting about his fantastic job, mahoosive salary, luxury flat etc etc. MrWitch stood and nodded throughout all of this, then added his tuppence worth.
"Aye, that's all great. Bet I get more sex than you do, though."
I was standing right beside him! That's the closest I've ever came to chucking a drink over the big sod.

I've just read this article. Looks like a nail in Digital Radio's coffin, which is good, as DAB is shite.
Perhaps Ofcom will take note and actually bring forward a digital radio service with a half decent audio quality. It is the 21st century after all. Surely DAB should be an improvement on FM, not a regression to something approaching medium wave?

I'd disagree. A mate of mine makes recordings from DAB and plays them on CDs in his car. The poor quality irritates me instantly.
And here's my basic point. A kitchen radio will sound pretty crap whether it's FM or DAB. In fact, a poor, hissy FM signal will sound noticeably worse than a DAB radio with a good signal, as digital is pretty much all or nothing.
But the compression (and it's low bitrate MP2, remember) means that if you are listening to the transmission on a decent hi-fi, FM sounds far better. It's simply not possible to get good quality from DAB.

I prefer going with black socks, cream are very traditional. What kind of function are you going to? If you feel adventurous then blue, green or even burgundy can look quite good too. If you're not wearing a jacket socks should either blend with the tartan (i.e. blue, green etc) or just be plain old black or cream. Flashes again should be a colour, what kind of shirt are you wearing? And neck wear of any kind?
TWW are you feeling better now though? I've missed you :(
