Current obsession.
I am currently obsessed with 70s r'n'b maestros Dr Feelgood.

What is your current 'thing'...or do you not in fact have one? Are you a sensible grown-up who no longer has keenly-felt but ultimately short-lived fads?

NB Anyone attempting to make a 'currant' pun (hahahahahaha - that sounds like CURRANT BUN!!!!111!) will be visited this evening by a gangland enforcer and tortured by being locked in a cupboard with Foxtrot, Pires, a bottle of poppers and some gritty lube.

I frequently experience keenly-felt but ultimately short-lived fads
just not right now though, and I can't think of the last one.

I'm currently rocking transport tycoon deluxe.
But I am also slightly obsessed with getting a new car.

are you still trying blag one from Dagenham Motors or have you given up?

(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:15, Reply)
Oh no, that's a work issue, I've given up on that
but I am actually trying to buy a Ford

(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:32, Reply)
don't be ridiculous

(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:33, Reply)
I'm not
I've listened to two Tool albums and find it difficult to tell where each song stops and starts
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:36, Reply)
that may be in part because quite a few of them transition from one to the other
occasionally based on mathematical series.

Generally though, the musicianship and song writing is outstanding.

I am something of an obsessive, but I love everything about their music.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:39, Reply)
I've always been surprised I don't like them
there's a few songs that are tolerable, but my brother constantly plays entire albums by them, and it just grates.

None are as bad as one particular song which I'm struggling to remember the name of by them. I think it was Wings for Marie
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:47, Reply)
I used to think you were cool
And Wings for Marie is in two parts, and is about his dead mum. You just insulted his dead mum. How do you feel now?
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:49, Reply)
well she wasn't much good
just lay there.

One day I'm sure that I'll give them another a shot. I did know Wings is in two parts- that's what I mean about the songs blending
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:51, Reply)
I find that a lot of their stuff, particularly the later stuff, is more like classical music
in it's arrangement and with the dynamics and stuff. Hence the different parts, and songs blending.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:52, Reply)
I think it's just too repetitive
Vicarious is pretty bad in that respect as well, to the extent that if I hear it I get a horrible itch in my back. Truth
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:57, Reply)
Maybe you should shower more
Follow in Jeff The Dogfucker's footsteps.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:01, Reply)
Charming
I think it's pure boredom, and a wish for them to do something interesting.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:02, Reply)
Maybe some of their earlier stuff would be more up your street.
Check the songs 'Hooker with a Penis', 'Aenima' and 'Parabola'.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:03, Reply)
I'll certainly give them a shot

(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:06, Reply)
Stinkfist is also a good early one

(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:12, Reply)
as much as I like them
Vast are far more repetitive!
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:04, Reply)
not in the least
though bear in mind that both of the Tool albums I've heard, I reckon must be relatively recent.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:06, Reply)
If they were Lateralus and 10,000days
then they are the more recent two, but the former is 10 years old or so
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:08, Reply)
well one of them was definitely
Ten 1000 Days
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:09, Reply)
if the other one sounded similar it would be Lateralus

(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:10, Reply)
I'd guess so
I can think of two songs I like at least Prison Sex and Schism
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:11, Reply)
Schism is off Lateralus
And is a cracking tune. Prison Sex (also excellent) is off Undertow.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:14, Reply)
we're definitely talking about Lateralus then
because I heard Schism off that, and Prison Sex as a back tune to something else
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:17, Reply)
Schism was the song that first got me into Tool

also, the second part of Wings for Marie is an incredible piece of music

(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:51, Reply)

(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:57, Reply)

John Paul Jones is an amazing musician
even if you don't particularly like their attitude or their sound, you have to admit there is some interesting and high quality music going on on that album.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:03, Reply)
^this I can agree with
then I look at the last 5 songs I added on Spotify and despair about my taste
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:05, Reply)
I don't have to admit anything of the sort
the album was highly tedious and uninteresting. I tried listening to it, I really did, but after three or four attempts, if nothing is grabbing my attention, it's not going on again.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:09, Reply)
that's fair enough
I can imagine that some of it might be a bit abrasive to listen to as well. I've gone off it compared to how good I thought it was to begin with.

There are still some musical phrases and timings on it that impress the hell out of me though.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:11, Reply)
Do you like Judas Priest?

(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:17, Reply)
I don't know much of their stuff really
aside from Breaking the Law and maybe one or two others. Don't really do it for me aside from in a tongue-in-cheek way

Vodafone, apparently went out of stock after I ordered it but before the credit check was completed.
Which is fair enough, what isn't fair enough is that I emailed them on the 17th and they didn't come back with an answer until this morning.

I'm with them
I have found the talk plan and packages to be good but the customer service is pretty much abysmal across the board. Nothing is simple with them. Apple man fixed my phone in minutes this morning I was impressed.

Also currently watching true blood s3 and new futurama and dexter

Edit: did you ever watch studio 60? That's also rather fabulous, cancelled after 1 season though, but created by the guy who made West wing. DiT has been promising to catch up on sons of anarchy but I bet he still hasn't.

I've not got time to watch all the telly I want
Bloody job getting in the way. Also my wife expects me to spend time with her, and by that she means actually having conversations, not just watching telly. I'm beginning to think this marriage thing may have been a terrible terribly mistake.

My current obsession
is with buying an Alfa Romeo, I've always had a bit of a hard-on for them, but now it seems worse than ever. I have a perfectly serviceable car, fast and reliable, but it's just not quite enough.

I'm awful for getting short-terms fads, though. The last one I had was for bonsai trees. Trees don't grow quickly enough for a man with a three second attention span.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:17, Reply)
Alfa Romeo are shit and ugly.

A 147 or a 156
I haven't quite decided yet. Or I might get a GTV, if I can fit in it.

Brera ftw

(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:21, Reply)
Don't quite have the monies for a Brera
but the people I have spoken to about them have been a little disappointed.

The MiTo's supposed to be quite fun and the new Giulietta's supposed to be an excellent car if you don't mind it not quite being an Alfa.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:23, Reply)

Other than that - reading Iain Banks's books. Currently half way through Transition.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:17, Reply)
It's pretty good I think
I think it's a good combination of his sci fi stuff which I like and his real fiction stuff, which has been pretty crap since The Crow Road.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:19, Reply)
Crow Road
before or after Dead Air and Complicity? because I quite like those. And Espedair Street. That is excellent.

I've been rereading some sci fi, Excession is outstandingly good and Consider Phlebas as well.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:21, Reply)
I like all his Culture sci-fi novels
The Wasp Factory is blooming brilliant.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:22, Reply)
glad to hear it
I heard some condemnation of Look to Windward the other day, which I did not appreciate.

The Wasp Factory is great. I think Espedair Street is my favourite due to reading it at the time of my emerging love of the sort of music it is sort of about.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:24, Reply)
I really liked Complicity. This one is good. I'm not in to sci-fi so haven't read any of the Iain M Banks titles
Didn't enjoy Espedair St that much first time around but I may give it another go.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:23, Reply)
The film of Complicity isn't too bad
the series of the Crow Road is pretty good too. By which I mean it has tits in it.

I need to get Transition.

Most of his sci fi isn't quite like other peoples. I'd recommend reading the Player of Games.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:26, Reply)
I thought the Player of Games
was one of his least impressive books. It was well written, but the story was quite clichéd. I much preferred Use of Weapons.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:28, Reply)
it was the first I read
and I really liked the way he described the games and stuff.

I don't really care for Use of Weapons, but I don't really know why, as I know a lot of people really rate it. You and my bro for example, who are both fans of his work.

It's unusual, but I think I don't like it because I like the characters and don't like what happens to them.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:33, Reply)
I will try Player of Games ta.

I request that you do NOT speak so crassly in front of the lady!
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:16, Reply)
What?

(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:17, Reply)
It was a (in my opinion) excellent way of calling him creepy by quoting creep by radiohead.

(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:19, Reply)
I didn't notice
But that is rather clever.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:20, Reply)
Yeah a bit to clever to be funny though.
For shame.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:21, Reply)
I don't like radiohead.
So it's completely lost on me.
Besides, its not creepy
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:21, Reply)
Why thank you! Your flattery is so very endearing.
You too are looking particularly dashing. Is that a new top hat?
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:20, Reply)
You honour me, m'lady
And sadly not, 'tis the same hat, but I thought to make it more presentable, in order to not offend when in your presence.

Your Corpse Bride reference has just reminded me, I was singing "This Is Halloween" under my breath on the bus this morning
No idea why, I'm not even a fan of the film...

EDIT: Hang on, aren't the Moulettes the ones whose video appeared on /links a month or so back?
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:03, Reply)
NO!
Nightmare is nowhere near as good as Corpse Bride, plus its been adopted by fucking emos as like a symbol of how dark they are and shit. Ruined it.

Yerrr, their album came out on Monday, I fucking love it.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:08, Reply)
I've not seen Corpse Bride
One thing I will say about Nightmare is that the soundtrack is brilliant. But I do agree with you, I hate the Emo twats too!

Sweet, might give them another listen tonight.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:10, Reply)
Corpse Bride is well worth a watch.
I'd say Burton's best film.

And if you do check out the moulettes again, Bloodshed in the Woodshed and Cannibal Song are excellent.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:14, Reply)
Must admit, I'm not usually a fan of Burton
But I really enjoyed Sweeney Todd, so I shall take you up on that advice!
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:26, Reply)
Thanks a lot
it's in my head now, too.

Happiest track ever.

The stranger thing is that I was singing the Manson version from when it was re-released.
This one

Current TV show is How I Met Your Mother
Current music is coming entirely from Dethklok.

I have started painting models
again but am quite embarrassed by it. Good fun though and I don't seem to have lost much of my touch which is nice.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 13:59, Reply)
I used to paint some of my mates' models occasionally
and found it very therapeutic and quite enjoyable. Not enough for me to squander hundreds and hundreds on models for a game that is terribly terribly nerdy.

Don't know anyone who ever painted a whole army either.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:01, Reply)
I used to paint super models
With my jism.

yeah me
I painted a huge chaos army at boarding school. And I painted lots of little squads for other people. Earned me some nice cash. It is very therapeutic.

Hahha I just lolled there.
It's produced by some dude who did the Cramps and some other suitable matches. I'm certain it will be brilliant and have pre-ordered my vinyl copy from Piccadilly Records.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:06, Reply)
the Cramps
did they do Human Fly?

I bet that little vinyl crackle adds something nice to their sound
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:07, Reply)
Yep, that's them.
Great, great band in my opinion.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:08, Reply)
there is one song of theirs which is absolutely outstanding
unfortunately I have no idea what it is called

Too bad

BTW, none of my cupboards have a lock. Can we use the wet room instead?

I've just found a classic quote from you
"Clit like a silverback's knuckle"

Again, I applaud you Sir.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:08, Reply)
You are welcome to borrow it
however, I won't be using it with the same frequency.

At a bash I used it to describe a former partner's anatomy and someone present thought I was referring to another member of our community and duly informed them. Needless to say they were understandably unhappy.

I stole it off Donkey Gums anyway.

I'm busy this evening Monty
I'm trying to get into Curb Your Enthusiasm at the minute, partly because I have series one as a free gift but mostly because so many people bang on about how great it is. As far as I can tell, the programme is, as Amorous Badger would put it, "Man with no personal skills whatsoever annoys people" and isn't as funny as I'd have hoped. But then Larry David is partly responsible for Seinfeld, the most overrated TV programme of all time
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:16, Reply)
It's not very funny at all.
And Ricky Gervais thinks it's brilliant - therefore it is shit.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:22, Reply)
I can't agree with you on three thigns in two days
So there must be more to it than I'm seeing. But so far it seems to be be cringeworthy comedy, which only very rarely works well
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:34, Reply)
Curb is brilliant
moments of genius in it.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:29, Reply)
I can only imagine it is shit
and as Monty says that no talent arsewipe dicksplatt Gervais likes it, so it can't be good.

People rave about Gavin and fucking Stacey and that is absolute tripe.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:30, Reply)
I'm not even going to try Gavin and Stacey
Because of that stupid fat fuck James Corden. Possibly it was funny before his ugly bastard face got everywhere, but if I were to watch it now I'd be too busy screaming abuse and hurling Slimfast at the TV to enjoy it. A bit like that episode of Doctor Who he was in. In which his character claimed to be 27. Twenty-fucking-seven! Younger than me! Either that was was some very unkind scriptwriting or he really is that old but the pies have put ten years on him. Won't lower myself to Wiki him, the repulsive scrotal sack of a globulous cunt.

I really don't like James Corden.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:37, Reply)
believe it or not
he's not the worst thing about it

I actually don't believe it
What the fuck is?
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:51, Reply)
the script, the acting, the fat slag in it, rob brydon
the really bad fake welsh accents, "oh, what's occurring?"
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 14:59, Reply)
I've never been able to watch more than 5 minutes of it without changing channel
Usually to find some more intersting adverts.
(, Fri 20 Aug 2010, 15:04, Reply)
I tend to know at a glance whether something like that will be unfunny to the point of annoying me
but got coerced into watching it. I sat stony faced for most of an episode then delivered a rant at my brother about how awful it was.

He tried to reason it to be because of the welshness of it and me having lived in Cardiff.

He was wrong. It is just pure shit.

I found the IT Crowd fucking dreadful as well. Not least because of the awful over the top canned laughter.

And getting into the habit of playing a random 60s/70s album of his every evening on Spotify. Dunno anything about him yet and will keep it that way for a while. You've got to keep these obsessions slow burning.
