# Not originaly
see below.
(, Tue 20 May 2008, 12:27, archived)
# Actualy, annoying as it is, that one is correct.
Aluminum is the original name for it and it was us Brits who chaged it to Aluminium so that it fitted in better with the way other elements are pronounced like cadmium etc.

# Exactly

you are correct.

# Having wikipedia'd it I stick by my guns...
" The spelling aluminium is the international standard in the sciences (IUPAC). The American spelling is nonetheless used by many American scientists. Humphry Davy, the element's discoverer, first proposed the name alumium, and then later aluminum. The name aluminium was finally adopted to conform with the -ium ending of metallic elements.[5] Canada as US, Australia as UK."

International standard. Meaning worldwide. Unlike World Series ;)

# And it's probably built from "Aluminum"
grr

*edit* how rude of me, woo for you
(, Tue 20 May 2008, 12:24, archived)
# That one (and only that one) isn't their fault.
The first paper on the stuff spelt it 'Aluminum'. The US stuck with it while he rest of the world decided it didn't fit and changed it accordingly by adding the 'i'.
But spelling sulphur as 'sulfur' and then forcing the rest of the world to use it (fudging IUPAC...) is beyond the pale.

Edit: As Prof. Headwound is in a different part of this thread, we'll have to declare a mindpiss draw...
