This is a link post It's all kicking off at the Kremlin
Nothing false about that big flag on top of that dome

This is a normal post Great "defences", you let the object get to about six inches away before blowing it up.
Make sure it's properly in camera frame first, which just happens to be filming that random piece of roof. False flag, anyone?

This is a normal post Russian intelligence, disinfo and propaganda is pretty good, it's just everything else they suck at.
I'm not convinced this was a false flag or a genuine assassination attempt, as either way it's just shambolically incompetent.

This is a normal post Yeah, if Ukraine were actually intending to bump off Putin I'm sure they wouldn't make such a shit job of it. Probably a third party.

This is a normal post It's clearly for show
You don't air-burst your bomb above a building you want to damage unless it's a fucking big bomb. This gives maximum exposure with minimum risk of damage.

Still, there's three possibilities here:

1. Ukraine sticking two fingers up in a deniable way.
2. Dissident Russians.
3. False flag.

If I were a betting person I'd go with 1.
(, Wed 3 May 2023, 15:53, Reply)
This is a normal post Reaching the Kremlin would involve covering a fuckton of Russian airspace undetected
I'm going with 2. Highly unlikely to be a false flag considering how shit it was, but I'm sure that won't deter Putin and Co from seizing the opportunity for a little extra propaganda.

This is a normal post They can, but I'd still put that on dissident Russians rather than Ukrainian agents. Especially as it looked so amateurish.
probably just an anti-government type up to some wacky hi-jinx ahead of Victory Day.

This is a normal post Hasn't everyone remotely critical been murdered or locked up?

(, Wed 3 May 2023, 17:59, Reply)
This is a normal post Depends how much of the anti-Russian propaganda you buy into, I suppose.
Not that I'm in any way suggesting that the current Russian Government isn't actively and enthusiastically repressive when it comes to outspoken members of the population exercising anti-war/anti-Putin rhetoric - but the suggestion that anyone remotely critical of the current regime is whisked away in the night and tossed into a Gulag for the rest of their natural lives sounds a little too much like bad '80s movie to me.

The Navalny documentary paints a pretty accurate picture of Putin's Russia in my opinion. Certainly not the kind of place where protest and dissent is encouraged by any means, and about as far-detached from the bastion of liberalist societal and political freedoms that is Ukraine - but hardly North Korea, either.

I reckon you can hear the thing being launched near the camera. On reflection, I'm also going with 2.
(, Wed 3 May 2023, 22:03, Reply)
This is a normal post I think you could combine those possibilities for a few bonus permutations.
Dissident Russians could be working for/with/on behalf of Ukraine, or they could be duped by the FSB, or they could be duped by the FSB to work on behalf of Ukraine. Or Ukraine could be duped into action by the FSB in order to expose dissident Russians.
(, Wed 3 May 2023, 16:39, Reply)
This is a normal post Does that change the basic possibilities, or the actors & motivations behind them?

(, Wed 3 May 2023, 17:06, Reply)
This is a normal post Depends how basic you want to get.
These situations are often convoluted and complicated. The whole thing could just be a random blunder.

It could have been one Russian teenager with a toy drone and a bag of petrol. It could have been a proof of concept/demonstration flight for the benefit of the Russians, Ukranians, or any number of other interested parties (arms companies, nation states, Russian states, elements within the Russian government/organised crime networks). It could even have been a harmless drone flight (perhaps connected to the people seen climbing up the side of the dome) shot down by a deeply flawed Molotov-based anti-drone system.

This is a normal post You can always tell fake explosives
Fake explosives put out a lot of flame and last long enough to get a good shot on film, whereas real explosives put all their energy into the explosive force and are hard to film.
