Walkman Flashbacks
There you are innocently going about your day when suddenly a particular song transports you back to a specific time and place.
For me, Animotion's Obssession instantly brings back the fear and nerves of school exams. And you? Tell us all about it.

Goooooood Morning Vietnam!
John Cranefield played that every fucking morning at camp at RAF Boscombe Down. The pervading memory is the combined odour of sweat and boot polish at 5am.

Street Spirit : Radiohead
I was driving back from work on New-Years Eve 1996, when the radio was doing a flashback of the year’s big stories. In March of that year, an evil little f*cker called Thomas Hamilton walked into a primary school in Dunblane, Scotland and fired 105 rounds into a class of thirty 4-6 year olds, killing fifteen and one adult.
Whilst the spokesperson from the Snowdrop trust calmly spoke the names of the children and the manner of their deaths, the radio played Street Spirit by Radiohead, a song up until that moment that I loved.
Eleven years later, I can't hear that track without being transported to a stationary car on the hard shoulder of the A3 and my uncontrollable sobbing.
Apologies for distinct lack of humour...

Sweet Home Alabama
At around 17 we had cracked a local pub and each of us took on a theme tune from the jukebox. One lad, 'M', took Sweet Home Alabama and after sticking it on would ask everybody round the table "What film is this from?"
The answer he wanted was Con Air and would we all play dumb and let him have his moment. One weekend we all watched every video we could find and consulted the internet to build up a list of films containing his song.
Now when I hear it I can't help but remember his open mouth as everyone named a different film without mentioning his beloved Con Air.
Beautiful.

What a wicked game to play . . .
i'm a great fan of Chris Isaak's classic and my girlfriend of the time bought me a copy of the 12" single one morning. Later that day we tried to hitch to Leeds (from Scotland) for an all day goth festival thing but got nowhere, so I made her drive and then shouted at her when she got stuck in Leeds one-way inner city motorway system and made her cry. Morale of the story - don't buy me records I like, I will be nasty too you.

Rolling thunder/ pouring rain
Every time I hear Hell's Bells, I think of Ohio State football games, where they would play the bell from the begginning of the song whenever the opposing team had a third down.
The crowd's (and we are talking about one hell of a crowd, roughly 105,000 people) reaction was absolutely insane every time they would do it, and whenever OSU would prevent them from gaining a first down, you felt like you were actually the ones who did it. The force from the crowd was unbelieveable.
I loved it.
Also, whenever OSU had a kickoff to the other team, they'd play "Stranglehold" over the loudspeakers because our kicker's name was Mike Nugent.
Additionally, I just realized that I'm posting on a British message board, so probably 75-85% of you don't know what the hell I'm talking about. OH WELL. Prove me wrong and vote for me.
apologies for length, girth, no wait she liked it, that's what I said to your mom, no complaints from the ladies, etc.

one of my friends has a particular association with Take On Me from when we used to work together. He would sing "Rob is gay, Rob is gay" to the same tune, and to this day still calls me if he's out somewhere and it's playing so he can recant that particular version in drunken tones...

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
Enola Gay, by OMD transports me back to when I was at Uni at Greenwich. More specifically, it transports me to walking down Eltham High Street after dark.
One problem.
At this point, I hadn't realised my love for 80s music and therefore had not actually heard the song at that point.
Hmmm.... odd?

That, and the vivid 80's flashback make me feel all fuzzy inside when I hear it :)

I opened a fire door...
My first year at university, it rained every single weekend. I was supposed to be out getting pissed and shagging the weekends away, but the weather always got in the way (I'm sure I'll get no sympathy from my friends in the UK.)
Anyway, I was really into Ani DiFranco at the time, and hearing the songs Fire Door and Both Hands off her Living in Clip album always brings me back to sitting on my windowsill, having a smoke and looking out at the rain on a Saturday.

Hi gate - Pitchin' +Smelly Germans+Foam Bullet Guns= Deep Space Night!
When I was 18, me and a few of my mates went around Europe for a month or so. Whilst in Munich, we paid a visit to the Kunstpark Ost, which is a moleste site packed with bars and clubs. Having stumbled into the only club that would allow us entry, we noted that there were two large halls to choose from.
We spent an hour in the first hall where a deep space dance night was taking place. Cue the scary Germans in Darth Vader suits on stage, shouting to " Fire Photons!", along with us being stuck next to some 50+ sweaty fat shirtless fucker, giving it full "big fish, little fish, cardboard box" The only song we recognised during this frightening episode was Hi-gate - Pitchin', a somewhat classic dance tune from the late Ninties.
Every time we head out as a group we relive the clinical dance moves of the scary dickhead.

fresh prince=fresh memories
whenever i hear "boom shake the room" nowadays, always gives me an instant flashback to the summer of '93, when the song was first around. Me and my best mate spent that whole summer school holiday with the same daily rountine, which consisted of buying a sausage roll, a 1/3rd extra free Dr Pepper then nicking a supermarket trolley and pushing each other around a car park in it. All of which took place to the constant bellowing of "Tick, tick, tick, tick....BOOM!" Legendary stuff

Chilling kids discos...
My earliest memories of my Oasis obsession go back to those chilling discos we all went to as children. Some weird guy who liked to wear creepy masks would play Wonderwall, but it wouldn't end there. He would make us poor, inncenct children line dance with our hands behind our backs, being but 6/7 at the time I had no idea what the hands behind the back as for,and I hated it, but if you didn't join in then the creepy mask guy would chase you...I'm surprised I don't need therapy yet...

anything by the offspring gives me a slight feeling of not knowing whats going on. i went to see them at the reading festival 2004 and according to my mates, i passed out and missed 5 of their songs, but the sheer crush of the crowd prevented me from falling.
gotta be slightly grateful i suppose........

Wildchild - Renegade Master '98
reminds me of the first time i ever went down on a girl.
of course, had i done it at the time the song was released, that would have made me 10/11 years old.
however, as i have a vast array of old school classics on my computer, it actually happened last month......

My contributions:
"Closing Time" by Semisonic - reminds me of my year as an AFS exchange student in Hong Kong, particularly one fine day when I was doing a bit of wandering around Kowloon, walking down Nathan Road and checking out some cool cheap bookstores.
"How Bizarre" by OMC - takes me straight back to that year again, sitting in a pub with a dozen or so mates from all around the globe - from the US to Turkey, Finland to Australia - four sheets to the wind and all of us singing along loudly to the song, with me thinking "How the fuck do this lot know a song from New Zealand for fuck's sake?"
"Tennessee Waltz" by fuck knows who - getting shot down cold by the girl I was crushing on hardcore back at the school formal when I was 11. She was this cute little shy, blonde, librarian type. The next year she moved away. Bumped into her at a friend's party about 6 years later, and she'd turned into some white-trash, hair-dyed-black, fucking dirty slut.
"PIMP" by 50 Cent and Snoop Dogg - Me and my boys getting stoned as hell and drunk as sailors when visiting one of the guys a few hours south of where the rest of us lived. Particularly the resident mad-bastard drunk who climbed into the taxi and tried to ask the Samoan taxi driver "Hmmm, are you a M.O.T.H.E.R.F.U.C.K.I.N.G.P.I.M.P. or whaaaaaaaaaaat?" (And yes, he did spell it all out letter for letter. And no, he didn't spell it right. In the least.)
I'd apologize for length but you all loved every inch of it.

Crappy soppy stuff
Last night walking home Trains 'Drops of jupiter' came on and for some reason reminded me of Leeds last year, lying in a tent with my head sticking out looking at the stars while my humping partner at the time was passed out on me.
Of course the tent is now ruined as it got pissed in. And other less glamorous things happened that weekend, nakedly having to hold another broken tent etc... but yeah that was alot of rambling

Savage Garden
I remember working for a couple of summers in a warehouse in Leeds to pay for my Uni drinking sessions. It was miserable boring work, carried out in a oven and (here's the kicker) any radio in the building couldn't pick up any radio station other than Radio Aire. Anyone in Leeds will be able to tell you what a load of shite this station is (Example jingle - "Today's best rock", followed by a snippet of Living On A Prayer). Plus, for some reason, someone at the station was a big fan of the Australian "Let Loose", so at least once every two hours, we got 3 and a half minutes of pure torture.
Now, as people will agree, I am usually a calm bloke. However, a snippet of Darren Hayes' voice takes me back to being bored, sweaty and fucked off and I violently attack any sound system that plays it.
