This is a question My Collection

Do you have display cabinets full of stuff? With it all neatly labelled, cross-referenced and entered into a database. Have you been to a convention? Do other collectors look up to you in awe?

I thought I was above this one. I'm not that autistically geeky that I have a Collection with a capital C. But no, I remembered I'm hoarding away every version of "Inside Macintosh" ever published.

What do you collect? And why? I mean, what makes you do it?

2000ads
Been collecting them since 1977 and all the Dredd megazines, all read and then stored in the A4 paper boxes we get at work then put in the cupboard under the stairs with prog numbers listed on them.

Books - too bloody many. I tend to buy anything by an author once I decide I like them, and like others here Terry Pratchett features, alongside Bernard Cornwell (Sharpe), George RR Martin, Brian Lumley and others. For the last ten years it's been first editions of new books which has seen some nice growth in resale value. Not that I would.

DVDs - Stargate and BSG but thank god for TV torrent sites ;o)

And my wife collects elephants, mainly Tuskers. The house is filling up with the buggers and they are now migrating into the garden. God help me if I ever win the lottery because she's bound to want a real bloody one.

The 2000ads are a bit embarrassing now, was seen reading them at work a few times to be met with "You read comics at your age??" I'm only 39 :o( and it's not a comic its a magazine. So there.

I collect things to make money and dont..
I have every Viz comic, annual, book, freebie etc which I will never sell because they are worth loads, am also collecting the new top 10list style free packs of skins inside amber leaf tobacco as on certain auction style websites you can sell them to loons trying to buy them all for the same price as the tobacco itself, so I smoke for free! Hurrah! maybe shouldn`t have told you.......

When I was younger, I collected editions of The Beano
I have every issue between 1990 and 2003. It's a rather impressive collection.

The problem is, I stopped reading the comic in 1999. I would have been twelve/thirteen at the time, and I felt that the comic was a little too immature for me. Still, I continued having the comic delivered to my house, thinking the collection would be worth something one day.

One week, in 2003, the comic didn't arrive. "No bother" I thought, "I'll just pick it up next time I'm in a Newsagent". Later that week, I did find myself in a newsagent. Sadly, this was a stop on the way to a school trip to France. Being a sixteen year old kid purchasing a comic intended for kids got me quite a lot of flak for the rest of the three-day journey.

I never did collect The Beano again.

Drunk
.
The things I've collected when drunk include ashtrays, glasses, traffic cones, street signs, an 8ft long park bench that we carried two miles back home (long story that one),litter bins, other drunks, lots and lots of cuts and bruises and the occasional policeman.

I also collected quite a few mental females that I'd find snoring in my bed next morning. I think one of them might have been attractive but that was a rarity.

Cheers

Being a French student
We're an odd bunch as a rule, and most of us have an Amelie-like thing in that we collect something small and random. Mine is Paris metro tickets, that I find in the randomest of places (Leicester bus station, on the floor at uni). My friend Chloe has a similar thing in that she collects little packets of sugar from wherever she goes. I think I have about 30 all told and it's just an excuse to go to Paris more often really.

Oh, and ticket stubs going back to about 2001.

EDIT: How could I forget my ever-growing earring collection? It does seem to be the main reason why I have no money.

Bills
I've got a stack of bills dating back a fair ol' while some of them are pretty colours like red too :-)

Oh, hang on, that probably fits more with the Debt Pron story...

Not really, I pay by direct debit!

But I do have a stack of tax letters that I am actually collecting. I might open them later.

Girth? Ask around - I've got it good :-)

Tickets
I have a pile of cinema tickets from every film that I've seen since 1999. I do not know why.

I also have a stack of supermarket receipts from the past year stuck to my fridge, but that started as an aid to budgeting which I think is an good enough excuse.

More
Kite Jr appears to collect My Little Pony toys. And Animal Hospital toys. And anything Scooby-Doo related. (But wont watch the cartoon)
Mrs Kite seems to be collecting set lists (best is Wildhearts from the Xmas gig in Wolves) and plectrums - 2 so far (Nicke from Backyard Babies and CJs from Wildhearts). Its a cool collection. Plus we have a few gig advert posters.
Ive also remebered I have a huge collection (in the loft) of Model aeroplane magazines, Airfix magazine (eary 80's), Fortean Times, FHM, Wargames mags. I just hate to throw stuff out, but I do tend to refer back to it. You never know when you need a side profile of a KV-1 do ya ?
Also a HUGE model railway and Scalextric collection (with boxes !). Ebay awaits !

It all started with the best intentions
The place I work in was fast going down the shitter and we were all called upon to try and scrimp and save as much as possible.
The post comes to me first in the mornings, so desperate to try and save my job and the company a few quid I started collecting the elastic bands off the post bags and then off the towels that go in the toilets and then off the mats and well you get the picture.
I now have thousands of the things all different lengths and strengths and they pretty much fill my desk, of course I have never let anyone use them, they are mine all mine!
Most people say I should make a huge ball out of them but I quite like the idea of stretching them over my body and building a bouncy suit.

Soviet and other communist memorabilia
Including medals, flags, books, DVDs, posters, watches, badges etc- basically anything quirky from Soviet era Russia, though I have a couple of non Russian communist items as well. Ideally I like to get original pieces, however I'm happy with reproduction pieces if they are clearly sold as such and cost substantially less than the original item. As a result I now also have a collection of books on collecting Soviet memorabilia. I would like to expand the collection and buy a few more expensive but nicer pieces, maybe a few more Red Army items (a T-34 perhaps?) and more from the early days of the USSR- though they tend to be prohibitively expensive.
Why do it? Because I find the history and politics of the Soviet USSR to be fascinating and remember both its portrayal as the major threat to human survival and also the events surrounding its subsequent demise. When I started collecting back in 1992 it was quite easy to get good items cheaply, so it took off from there.

DVDs
I also have an imense DVD collection, with all the titles you might expect, rings, wars and so forth.
However, I also collect bad films. Now, everyone has movies which are sort of guilty pleasures, films they know are a bit iffy, but you inexplicably like them anyways. You know, like Titanic, or Dirty Dancing.
What I'm talking about though are truly dreadful films, examples being Plan 9 from outer space, Zoltan: hound of dracula, and yes, The Delta Force, starring the legendary Chuck Norris.

Why do I do this? just for grins and giggles.

My wife collects Care Bears
at last count there were over 200 carebears or carebear related items in our house. They are apparently worth money one being worth over a 1000 quid!
She has this 6th sense that can spot a carebear from 100 paces at car boot sales or in charity shops. I have fueled this insane behaviour in the past, but now the whole family(both sides) continue to buy carebear items for xmas and birthdays.
HELP!

Not interesting at all,
but I collect Gundam miniatures.
Or at least I have started...
I also collect great music. For some people everyone thinks a Vinyl collection or a huge rack (lol) of tapes is very impressive, but I prefer my library neatly displayed on-screen in iTunes.

Broken car parts
Whenever I had to fix something on my car, I always used to keep the bits that had to be replaced. My dream was to collect enough parts to be able to make an entire car out of broken stuff.

I can't imagine what I would have then done with this unwieldy and totally useless monument to automotive wear and tear.

In practice I've never kept a car long enough to have to replace even a small percentage of it. The best results were with my MG Metro, which was capable of breaking itself at an alarming rate.

various, normally picked up on the way back from teh pub
Car badges, over 60, each different ranging from skoda to a porsche all of which are proudly displayed according to value of car and how pretty they are with an old style mini badge having pride of place in the middle of the mantle. Traffic signs, at one point enough to create a diversion blocking 4 streets, although sadly we weren't allowed to bring them with us when we moved. Ash trays of various shapes, sizes and brands without a single one having been paid for and for some reason lighters, lots of lighters... seriously, i've got a cardboard box almost full of the things, the box used to contain a 32" TV - seems i just buy another whenever i need anything from the tobacco counter and the old/barely working ones just get dumped in the box.

Child Molesters Shrunken Heads
I like to collect child molesters heads. Shrunken down using an old Inca Technique, they end up about 5" tall. The smallest is about 4"
Making them is my secret hobby. The thrill of the chase, the quick euthanising, chilled box for storage.
I have about 8 so far and 1 a work in progress. I have them hidden outside my place as the girlfriend doesn't know, and also believes that everyone should be given a 2nd chance??????

Father in law
He collects old radios. I had a look in his "shed" (large garage with a roof that would park 4 cars) once as he wants to ebay some of his collection. Now I know nothing about this sort of stuff, but he showed me a large dark green box with knobs on.
FiL "Radio from a Centurion tank that"
K "Oh. You selling it ?"
FiL "Well I have got 14 of them"
he also has loads of other stuff - a hand powered emergency distress beacon from RAF WW2 bombers (and the Italian version too). I was impressed.

music anyone?
Well..... I have a lot of music CDs..... over 200 of them (the last time I counted, over a year ago) and they are all catagorized into genres and are alphbetized within the genre. And when I get a new CD, even if it starts with A in the very first catagory, I will sit there and move every single one of them up one just to keep it all organized.

Nothing too exciting..
When I was little I would save my eyelashes if they were to fall out. It made me so sad to lose them - I didn't think they'd return! I also had an array of varrying sized Big Bird stuffed animals... and more unicorns than you can imagine. And geo-stones. Boxes upon boxes upon boxes.

My sister? My sister is the winner. She saved her clipped toenails for years. YEARS. At one point she began collecting them into a baby-food jar. My mother, not noticing the toenails, poured some olive oil into the jar for storage. The day of realization was horrible.

Another 8-bit geek
Yup - I'm another of those folks who collects 8/16-bit computers and games consoles (although I've stopped now I'm a student again - I've got to spend my cash on other things like food and rent).

Not quite sure how it started. Think it was that I never could throw out the stuff I originally had. After that I thought 'well now I can afford the things I thought were cool as a kid and do some catchup gaming', then rumour got out that I liked the stuff and people just started giving me machines. one even turned up on the doorstep with a note asking me to take care of it.

It was around this point my house had turned into the geek equivalent of battersea dogs home and my mate broke it to me gently that I was a retro gamer.

Sadder still is that I can code at least something on a majority of them (even now I still do demos and games from time to time).

This is a a small fraction of what is currently occupying my parents house whilst I'm hiding away and 'studying':

I suppose I also collect psycho ex-girlfriends too but I prefer the computers for some reason. Maybe 'best excuses given by psychotic significant others' would make a great question, although if anyone can beat 'It was his aunts dogs birthday party in cornwall and I had to go along as a friend for moral support' I'd be quite impressed :)
