I just heard on the radio that government advice on drinking is now to have two dry days per week
More info here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16443240
Can you do it offtopic? Can you go two whole days? (scarpe, I know you can do over 600)
Personally I don't fancy it.
The government spokesperson suggested that if you are drinking to relieve stress then you are "on a slippery slope", I say that just because you are on a slippery slope doesn't mean you will necessarily slide down on your arse.
Opinions please.

Alt: I dunno, something about cheese.

I probably do that anyway
mostly because it's raining and I can't be arsed to buy beer, or I'm saving or something. I haven't drunk anything since Thursday when I had two pints of Grolche.
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:42, Reply)
Actually that's a lie, I had a bottle of Peroni with my lunch on Sunday
OMG I'm lying about my drinking now, I'm actually an alcoholic.
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:44, Reply)
You'll be hiding bottles of vodka in cornflake packets before you know it.
I saw this on a video we were forced to watch at school, so it must be true.
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:45, Reply)
That's ridiculous. Only a fucking idiot would do that.
In the toilet cistern is much better, you can lock the door behind you there.
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:50, Reply)
It'll probably keep it cool as well.

You just have to fish out the labels every now and then if they soak off
otherwise it's a bugger explaining the blockage to the plumber.

Mmm, Peroni

(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:50, Reply)
I try not to run out if I can avoid it.
You never know when you might have a guest in the house and I always like to offer beer. This does require planning ahead as the best place to buy beer in this city is on the opposite side of town.
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:45, Reply)
If I have it in my housemate and I drink it.
So we don't often have it in.
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:48, Reply)
My brother is a member of a few wine clubs
and thus gets cases delivered all the time - this encourages him to drink a minimum of a bottle a day, plus pints at the pub. Not good.
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:50, Reply)
I was thinking of joining one, there's a fairly decent NHS discount on some of them weirdly.
But it's another monthly expense that will be nice but not really necessary.

Generally I do have two dry days a week as I stay over at my ex's to look after my kid.
No booze allowed there. This also means I have two days out of seven where I don't smoke , which is a good thing also.

Two years ago I went nine months without a drink.
Didn't miss it at all. Then on the other hand I've decided today will be "port and y-fronts day" and I shall be doing nothing other than sitting around in my pants drinking port. Just finished a glass, chin chin.
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:46, Reply)
And how is Lab doing these days?

(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:51, Reply)
Haha port and y-fronts day
Oh how I miss student life.
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:55, Reply)
I drink because I enjoy the taste of what I'm drinking
I rarely do shots, down pints, or anything like that. Getting drunk is a bonus, but if it doesn't happen, I don't really mind.

Alt: I had some magnificent cheese over Christmas, the brie in particular was excellent.

You've got to get involved with at least one of them.
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:56, Reply)
Oh I do drink on a Monday
I have a wine or two with the pub landlord. We're both partial to a bit of port, so this won't be difficult.

I was hoping you'd take the y-fronts option.

That showed moderate drinkers lived longer on average than either tea total or Alcomaholics
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 12:20, Reply)
Not an issue for me
I last had a drink on Thursday and I might have a drink tonight, although likely not more than a pint as I will be riding home, otherwise I probably won't have a drink until next weekend. Basically I've never bothered drinking alone as it does nothing for me.
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:57, Reply)
drinking alone is great, as you don't have to listen to other irritating drunk people

(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 11:58, Reply)
Not against it, I just find it's not enjoyable as a rule.

Didn't miss the booze. Started again and I have a couple of glasses of wine most days (with dinner). Even now, when I do have a dry spell I don't miss it. YMMV

I started going out to pubs in the villages around my home town with mates (none of whom I could trust NOT to have a drink or two over the limit, most of whom were fucking awful drivers even when sober) so I drove.
Didn't realise I hadn't had an alcoholic drink until a good 14 months in, then realised I hadn't missed it!

Their target market was pissed post-pub people who wanted to keep drinking and were prepared/drunk enough to pay over the odds. It was a good business model.

You kids don't know how good you've got it
The old gits on here could tell you about the ghost towns of their youth, come Sunday. How pubs would shut all afternoon. Then only open for a few hours in the evening. That is why oldies like Monty and Stunned turned to recreational drugs - there was fuck all else to do.
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 12:58, Reply)
It makes me feel ancient
when I remember Sunday afternoons as a student in Manchester, getting kicked out of The Queen of Hearts at 3 and not being allowed back until 6. Luckily the Asian Supermarket had no truck with UK licencing laws. Sadly they also had no truck with reasonable UK prices, £2 for a can of warm Fosters was a lot of money to a poor student in 1992.

Wait, I'm not talking to you because you made me cry up there ^
(, Mon 9 Jan 2012, 13:02, Reply)
I made you cry? Where?
I remember visiting a friend at uni in Leeds in 1994 on a Sunday afternoon. He knew how to treat guests - within an hour of our arrival he had taken us on a round trip to score some hash, via an off-license he knew would serve us out of hours. Good times.
